CARLSBAD (KGTV)-- Four years after the devastating wildfires in San Diego County, plants have grown back and neighbors rebuilt and recovered. The 2014 wildfires raged through neighborhoods, up over hills, turning at a moment's notice fueled by the Santa Ana winds. "It looked like a war zone of black smoke everywhere all over the place of all the roads blocked off," Homeowner Bob Payne said.He was at his relative's home when he got the call, and rushed back Carlsbad to see what he could do. He said he was lucky to have been out of town, otherwise he said he would've been on his driveway fighting the flames with a garden hose. His home was one of 65 structures that burned. Firefighters fought as 14 separate fires grew, eventually?covering 26,000 acres. At Bob's home, all that was left was a safe, full of photos of smiling children and their wedding memories. It took two and a half long years, to rebuild. He didn't want to leave their prime hilltop location, close to the beach and to town."It looks different, we changed our house some. We kept the same floor plan but we put in a couple perks in there which is nice," Bob said they had a pool put in and some exterior and interior designer changes.Nearby SDG&E did an update of their own, switching out wood poles for more durable metal ones."It burned up here and the and the fire department said it was 65-foot flames that came up and went to the attic of the house and burned it down," Bob said, explaining the fire flew up one of the poles and arched down to the roof of his home.Bob said he would never forget the generosity of the neighbors and complete strangers who gave everything from clothes, to food, to necessities to help his family through the disaster."I wish everybody a happy's Mother's Day on this day and count your blessings, and just enjoy your family and enjoy your health and everything that you have," saying he's thankful for the things that can't be touched by flames. 1992

Carrie Underwood silenced any questions about her readiness to return to the spotlight in perhaps one of the most anticipated performances of the 53rd annual Academy of Country Music Awards.PHOTOS: See red carpet arrivals from the 53rd annual Academy of Country Music AwardsUnderwood has been largely missing from the mainstream country music scene since a nasty fall at her Nashville home late in 2017. Just weeks after the Country Music Awards she fell down a set of stairs and later shared with fans that she had to have 40-50 stitches on her face. Adding some additional drama to her big return, Underwood did not walk the red carpet at this year's ACM Awards. ALSO: Sugarland dropping new track with Taylor Swift next weekWhile Underwood looked flawless onstage in a black and silver fringe dress, her vocals clearly dominated the moment as she belted out her new single, "Cry Pretty". GALLERY: TAKE A LOOK INSIDE THE 53RD ANNUAL ACADEMY OF COUNTRY MUSIC AWARDSShe got a standing ovation that went out for a measurable time inside the MGM Grand Arena as fellow country music performers and fans welcomed her back to the main stage. Fellow singer and winner of three ACM Awards Miranda Lambert touched on Underwood's performance backstage after winning Female Vocalist of the Year."It makes me proud to be a woman in this industry when I see her stand up there and do that," Lambert said.  1431

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif., (KGTV)-- Thousands of US Marines stormed a makeshift town today as part of the largest amphibious exercise in Camp Pendleton's history. With their guns drawn and light on their feet, the Marines at Camp Pendleton have one objective: secure the Red Beach Combat Town. The town is a collection of makeshift structures off Las Pulgas Road just west of Interstate 5.The scenario was this: The soldiers are fighting the enemy from a near-pier threat. The Marines got battle-ready at sea, aboard the USS Somerset and USS Macon Island, thanks to their special partnership with the US Navy. "We spend a lot of time on ship, a lot of time coordinating with the sailors themselves inside the welded deck inside the ship," Amphibious Assault [AAV] Section Leader, Sgt. Kenneth Larkin said. "Being able to rely on each other for the safety of our vehicles and our members, it's phenomenal."From ship to shore, the men and women arrive on their AAV. They creep onto shore at seven mph, then book it on land. The crew drops off the infantry, ant the combat simulation begins. This scenario kicks off this year's Steel Knight Exercise. With 13,000 Marines and sailors participating, it is the largest iteration of the Steel Knight Exercise at Camp Pendleton."The Marine Corps prides itself on being amphibious, so this is one of those exercises where the division gets involved. The entire division of Camp Pendleton," Infantry Platoon Sgt. Ethan Rhoades said. "It basically hones our skills to actually go from ship to shore and to seize an objective likely would in a real-time conflict."For two weeks straight, the men and women will repeat the aerial and amphibious exercises. Tough training in the elements will prepare them for real-life scenarios. "Just know that America's sons and daughters are working hard in the First Marine Division to prepare to win this nation's battles," 1st Marine Division Spokesperson, Lt. Cameron Edinburgh said. "This what we're trained to do. And get it done no matter what happens," Sgt. Rhoades said. 2061

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) - The Recon Challenge at Camp Pendleton takes Marines through a grueling 30-mile course, comprised of obstacles including a 1,000-yard open-ocean swim, mountainous terrain, and underwater knot-tying exercises. The challenge honors the fallen Marines of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Inherent Resolve. Participants run in the name of a fallen Marine, paying tribute by hanging dog tags on the iconic battlefield cross at the finish line."It's probably a collection of some of the toughest people on the planet, I mean it's, imagine a marathon but you're carrying 50 pounds plus you're swimming in the ocean, the pools, and doing these other events," said Adam Sorensen, who was medically retired from the Marine Corps two years ago. Sorenson's group was made up of Marines from 3rd platoon, commonly known as "LOWLIFE," Force Reconnaissance Company, 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division.PHOTOS: Camp Pendleton Recon Challenge 2019In addition to carrying the name of a fallen comrade, they also carried their comrade Jonathon Blank, who was medically retired after both of his legs were severed after stepping on an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan in 2010. "They are the guys you can count on the rest of your life, I mean it when I say they're my brothers," said Blank, who used prosthetics to cross the finish line. The event is also a chance for Gold Star Families to reunite with those their loved ones served with. One group of Marines completed the course in honor of Staff Sgt. Caleb Medley, who was killed during a training accident in 2013."It's like a family reunion, it's hard in a way, but it's really a joyful time because you're reconnecting with those people who served with Caleb, who had a bond with Caleb," said Diane Homm, Medley's mother. "When they say they're going to be there for you for the rest of your life they mean it, because they are, they're there for you." 1984
