CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A skate park that was once riddled with graffiti is getting a grand homecoming in the South Bay.The City of Chula Vista will hold a grand reopening of the Len Moore Skate Park on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., with raffles, prizes., local vendors, live music, and demonstrations by skating pros. The Boys and Girls Club closed the park last August due to costly maintenance and repair issues. This led to the organization giving up the park to the city.Since that time, though, vandalism and graffiti became a constant concern, which led to the park's reopening in February. City officials will now monitor the park for cleanliness and graffiti."Before the city could actually open it up there were some minor maintenance things that we needed to take care of. There were some ramps that needed to be taken out and demolished. There was a lot of graffiti," Gil Contreras, principal recreations manager with the City of Chula Vista, said.Community members had a say in the park's reopening as well. A series of community meetings asked the public what they wanted out of the park, the priority being the ability to skate for free. The park will also offer skate classes, day camps, and birthday party rentals.RESOURCES: Learning how to skateboard"We definitely took everything into consideration when reopening the park. [Community members] were concerned about the graffiti and the vandalism and things like that," Contreras said. "We did reassure them ... we have park rangers who frequently visit all of our parks. We have a staff who actually comes through every day and just kind of gets an idea and looks at everything and talks to the patrons."Since February's reopening, Contreras says all the city has received are positive remarks. The park is open daily from 8 a.m. to dusk to skateboarding, BMX bikes, scooters, in-line skating, and roller skating. All skaters must wear a helmet, and elbow and knee pads at all times.Contreras says the city will continue to look at elements skaters desire at the park to expand the park's offerings."This park is for everybody and we want to make sure everybody in Chula Vista can enjoy it," he added.Looking for a skate park in your community? CINCINNATI -- Decades ago, most Americans would have balked at the idea of climbing into a perfect stranger's car and trusting said stranger to drive them home safely. In your own childhood, your parents probably told you that getting in a stranger's car was a one-way ticket to becoming a milk carton celebrity. As of 2016, however, about 15 percent of Americans used and trusted ridesharing services such as Uber and Lyft, which encourage users to do just that. The expectation of a quick ride in a regular-looking car means some of those users, according to Sgt. Eric Franz, have hopped in the wrong vehicle by mistake."We've had a couple of reports over the years," he said. "Back around Thanksgiving, we had one documented case where a lady walked out, she thought she was getting into her Uber, and she got into another car. She reported that she had been sexually assaulted."In Los Angeles, one man was even arrested for posing as a rideshare driver with the intention of preying on female passengers.Scripps station WCPO in Cincinnati asked Ryan Higgins, who estimated he uses a ridesharing service at least once a week, if he had ever taken steps to make sure he was getting in the right car."Honestly, now that you say that, I don't think I've ever done anything," the Cincinnati resident said. "I think they just say, 'Hey, Ryan?' or they say my name, and I just go for it."Franz said intoxicated would-be riders are the most likely to make a mistake and put themselves in a vulnerable position, but anyone can benefit from a few simple safety tips.First, make sure you've got the correct license plate before you get in a car. Uber and Lyft both display the plate number as soon as it matches you with a driver so you can spot the correct vehicle.Next, get into the back seat, not the passenger seat. If you have gotten into a car with a person of ill intent, it's easier to escape from the back than the front, where they might be able to physically restrain you."(If) somebody's doing something inappropriate, it becomes very obvious very quickly," he said. "You can get out of the car right away."Finally, if you connect with the correct person but they still seem a bit shady, let a family member or friend know where you are. A quick text can ensure there's someone asking later whether or not you got home safely. 2353

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A Chula Vista Police officer was honored with a Medal of Valor and Purple Heart from the Chula Vista Police Department Thursday morning after being stabbed while on duty in 2017.Officer David Sachs was honored with a Medal of Valor for his “extraordinary bravery and willingness to protect the lives of others, without regard for his own safety” the department said. He was also awarded a Purple Heart for his injuries while on duty.On September 19 of 2017, Officer Sachs along with Officer Leo Banales and Chaplain Wes Anderson responded to a home on Monterey Avenue after receiving a report that a man’s neighbor threw a large piece of concrete over his fence, injuring the victim.RELATED: Chula Vista Police officer who shot man recovering from stabbing? When officers arrived, the victim pointed out the suspect’s house. After knocking on the door, the suspect’s mother answered and invited the officers in.Police say, though they didn’t know at the time, the suspect, described as a 6-foot-tall man in his late 20s, was suffering from emotional or psychological distress. After stepping into the home’s kitchen, the suspect started attacking Sachs with a knife, stabbing him multiple times in the face, head and arm.Police say Sachs was able to knock the suspect to the ground while yelling “Knife! Knife! Knife!” to his partners. The suspect then lunged at Banales with a knife before he and Anderson went outside. According to police, Sachs drew his weapon and told the suspect to drop the knife before the suspect blocked the exit and attacked him again with the knife.RELATED: Officer stabbed, suspect shot three times in Chula Vista?Police say Sachs then moved the suspect’s mother behind him for safety and shot the suspect. The suspect collapsed in the dining room after being struck. After hearing the shots, Anderson went back to the home’s front door to help. After more officers arrived, medical aid was given to the hospital who was taken to the hospital where he later died.Sachs was stabbed six times. CINCINNATI — Four Cincinnati Reds players knelt during the national anthem before an exhibition game against the Detroit Tigers at Great American Ball Park Tuesday night.Among the players kneeling in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement were Joey Votto, the Reds' star first baseman, pitcher Amir Garrett and left fielder Phillip Ervin.Garrett recently said he was reluctant at first to speak out in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, but he now says he's found his voice and calls for an end to racial injustice."I was scared to talk about these injustice issues we were having because in baseball, there's not a lot of African Americans that play the game, and I was nowhere near Kaepernick (in prominence)," Garrett said. "I felt I could be pushed out of the game. That was really scary for me."Since the death of George Floyd at the hands of police in Minneapolis earlier this year, Votto has been an outspoken supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement. Earlier this month, he was seen wearing a Black Lives Matter shirt during a workout."I think I've changed as a man. I feel my perspective has changed," Votto told the Associated Press earlier this month. "I didn't want to (speak up), but I couldn't sleep. There was a long stretch where I couldn't sleep. When it affects me that deeply, I felt strongly about saying something and learning. Every day I'm trying to learn."The demonstration by Reds players came a day after several members of the San Francisco Giants knelt for the national anthem prior to an exhibition on Tuesday. Among the Giants players who knelt were outfielder Hunter Pence, infielder Pablo Sandoval and rookie Mauricio Dubón, as well as manager Gabe Kapler. The Giants' demonstration prompted a response from President Donald Trump, who said that when any player or coach kneels for the anthem ahead of a sporting event, "the game is over for me." 1907

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A local man got a big surprise from a 10News viewer when he arrived today at a South Bay auto body shop."It's unbelievable.  I'm so appreciative," said 84-year-old Frank Dabalack.Last week, 10News reported on how a con man left Dabalack with a costly mess. A man showed up at his San Carlos home and offered to fix a dent in the back of his car for 5.FRANK'S STORY: Scammers targeting drivers with disability platesDabalack says when the work began, the costs nearly tripled. The dent never got fixed, and the man did end up causing more damage before taking off with Dabalack's check, which he stopped.Police told 10News the scammer was likely targeting seniors with disability plates. When Denise Marquez saw the story, she was spurred into action. Marquez just sold Marquez Auto Body, a 55-year-old shop first opened by her parents - and plans to retire at the end of the year. She's not taking new customers except for one man."Seeing him being take advantage of makes me very angry. Wanted to help even more. I want him to see the legacy of my mom and dad. I just felt really bad and needed to help him," said Marquez.Marquez tracked down Dabalack and offered to help out. When he showed up, he learned how much help. She told him she would be covering the cost of a new bumper and the total ,000 repair bill"There's not just bad people but a lot of good people. She's one of the good people on this earth," said Dabalack. 1486
