PATERSON, N.J. -- A tiny poodle named Bear is clinging to life after being tossed from a vehicle in New Jersey over the weekend, a local shelter said.The Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge described the dog as emaciated and matted when he was found lying in the street "after being discarded like trash," the shelter wrote on Facebook. It appears he suffered "a lifetime of neglect," they wrote.The dog was thrown from a car window around 1:30 p.m. Saturday, near 927 Market St. in Paterson, the social media post said.As of Sunday morning, the poodle was in the intensive care unit at Oradell Animal Hospital in Paramus.The shelter said Bear suffered pelvic fractures, skin lesions from road rash and a possible herniated diaphragm. PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi, one of the most prominent women to lead a Fortune 500 company, will step down on Oct. 3.She will remain as chairwoman of the board of directors until early 2019. Nooyi, 62, will be replaced by Pepsi's global operations chief Ramon Laguarta, 54.Nooyi, who was born in India, is one of a handful of people of color to lead a Fortune 500 company.She helped turn Pepsi into one of the most successful food and beverage companies in the world. Sales grew 80% during her 12-year tenure. She spearheaded Pepsi's transition to a greener, more environmentally aware company.Nooyi has been with Pepsi for 24 years. Before becoming CEO she led the company's expansion through acquisitions, including its 2001 purchase of Quaker Oats Co. She earned million last year, and million over the last three years, according to company filings."Growing up in India, I never imagined I'd have the opportunity to lead such an extraordinary company," she said.Her departure leaves only 24 women leading Fortune 500 companies, after Beth Ford became the CEO of Land O'Lakes just last week. People all across San Diego are breaking the law to ease parking problems in congested neighborhoods. They're either painting over red curbs to add spaces, or they're adding red paint to the curbs near their driveways to keep people from blocking them in.Either way, it's illegal and the city deals with hundreds of complaints each year on its Get it Done website and app. City officials say it's most common in neighborhoods like Hillcrest, Pacific Beach and North Park, where the population is dense, and parking spots are at a premium.San Diego Municipal Code 82.14 says "No person shall paint or otherwise mark any curb, sidewalk or street surface without first complying with the requirements of this code." Although city officials say it's tough to enforce because it's hard to prove who painted the curb. The San Diego Police Department wasn't able to provide 10News with details on what the penalties could be.An SDPD Spokesman did say anyone who gets a ticket for parking in a red zone that may be illegal can appeal the citation here.In 2017, the city dealt with 222 reports of illegally painted curbs on the Get it Done website. They try to respond to all of them. Already in 2018, there have been more than a dozen. PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- When the COVID-19 pandemic first hit, tens of millions of school kids across the country suddenly found themselves going to school at home. Among them was 17-year-old Andya Sharps.“It was kind of rough, my high school year,” she said, “but I'm just excited that it's all over.”It was rough, in part, because in addition to being a high school senior during the pandemic, Andya also has a young son.“We had to learn how to do work at home, instead of being around our teachers for help. So, it was just a little hard,” she said. “Then, [my son’s] out of school on top of that. So, I had to deal with his schoolwork and my schoolwork at home.”Despite the challenges, she’s now graduating from her Philadelphia high school having been student of the month several times and with perfect attendance.“She came to us with her infant and she came with her determination and she just had a drive to finish,” said Lita Byrd, principal of Ombudsman Northwest Accelerated High School.Andya’s accomplishments left her grandmother, Adrienne Pearson, nearly speechless.“As talkative as I am, I’m kind of without words to express it,” Pearson said. “This is just magnificent that she's doing this she's doing this for herself, as well as for her son, and I am so very, very proud of her.”However, Andya had help along the way, too, thanks in part to an immersive curriculum and program for 12,000 at-risk students in U.S. public schools through ChanceLight Ombudsman Educational Services.“You've got to create that environment where, one, that the slate is wiped clean, it's a brand-new day and we're going to find out what you're really strong in,” said ChanceLight CEO Mark Claypool.For them, technology has always been a part of that, which is why they say the pandemic didn’t affect their students’ ability to learn remotely, as much as it did others.As for Andya, she’s heading to college and plans to study pediatric physical therapy.“You can do anything that you put your mind to,” she said, “no matter what.” 2030
