Coffee giant Starbucks has set a goal to become more diverse: by 2025, they want 30% of its corporate employees and 40% of its retail and manufacturing employees to be Black, indigenous, and people of color.The Seattle-based company made the announcement Wednesday as they look to create a more diverse and equitable workplace to "advance racial and social equity as part of its ongoing journey to create a welcoming and inclusive Third Place.""As we consider the role and responsibility of Starbucks, as a company, to lead by example in areas of inclusion, diversity, and equity, we will be intentional about the actions we take and how they line up with our Mission and Values, commit to transparency with all stakeholders about our thinking and our goals, and hold ourselves accountable," Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson said in a letter to employees.They also are starting a new mentorship program, anti-bias training requirements, and other initiatives.The company added that it'll connect its executive compensation program to its goals of building "inclusive and diverse teams."Starbucks says these diversity goals will ensure that its coffee shops are "welcoming places for all." 1191
CLEVELAND, Ohio – President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden are debating each other for the first time.WATCH LIVE:The 90-minute event will be split up into six 15-minute segments and there will be no commercial interruption.Each of the six segments will be dedicated to a predetermined topic. The Commission Presidential Debates says those topics will include: “the Trump and Biden records, the Supreme Court, COVID-19, the economy, race and violence in our cities, and the integrity of the election.”The topics were chosen by the moderator of the debate, “Fox News Sunday” anchor Chris Wallace.Amid the coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 general election is unlike any other in American history. The threat of COVID-19 has prevented the candidates from campaigning in a way we’ve seen in the past. Trump has still held rallies, but with some precautions taken, while Biden has opted to rely heavily on virtual events and socially distanced speeches.Tuesday night, Trump and Biden will appear on stage together, but far apart and the candidates are not expected to shake hands. The audience will also be smaller than in years past and all in-house spectators will be tested for the coronavirus.This debate will provide both nominees the opportunity to shape the narrative of the election, which has largely been focused on the handling of the pandemic, the push for racial equality, and most recently the vacancy of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s seat on the Supreme Court.Along with those topics, a bombshell report from The New York Times is sure to be brought up. The “newspaper of record” reported Sunday that it has obtained more than two decades worth of Trump’s tax information. The documents reportedly revealed Trump paid just 0 in federal income taxes in 2016 and 2017. In 10 of the 15 years before that, he paid no income taxes at all, The Times reports. The president has called the reporting “fake news.”Trump and Biden are getting ready for the debate in starkly different ways. The Washington Post reports that Trump isn’t doing much to prepare, instead relying on his experience at the White House and at rallies. Meanwhile, The Post says Biden is doing more traditional debate prep.After Tuesday’s debate, the American people will have to wait more than two weeks before Trump and Biden face off again on Oct. 15 at a town-hall style debate in Miami. However, one self-proclaimed diet guru believes shows like the "The Great American Baking Show" should come with a warning that it advocates obesity.Do cooking shows really have an effect on how much watchers end up consuming? Eight in 10 adults watch cooking shows, according to research by MarketingCharts.com. Many of those cooking shows don’t necessarily promote healthy eating. But Dr. Kevin Masters, a professor of psychology at University of Colorado Denver, says you can’t correlate obesity to cooking shows.“The overweight and obesity issue in this country is around--depending on your numbers-- is 60 to 70 percent of the population,” says Masters. “And you’re talking about a very small population even watch these shows, much less we could say are influenced by them.” However, Marketing Charts research also found that 57 percent of those who watch these cooking shows purchase food as a direct result of something they saw on the show. "Some people will plant a thought that they weren't having before,” Dr. Masters explains. “Will it actually lead to action in a particular instance? That's going to depend on a whole lot of other factors." Dr. Masters says you might have people make or buy fatty, sugary food after watching a cooking show, but that doesn't mean these shows are the direct cause of people in America being overweight. "I think what's more likely is the audience attracted to those shows--maybe an audience that's more attracted to that kind of eating anyway--and finds something in the show that's of interest to them." 1689
CLAREMORE, Okla. -- A Black Lives Matter group in Oklahoma group is calling a symbol at a museum outside of Tulsa offensive and asking for it to be removed. The cornerstone of the Claremore Museum of History contains a swastika, but some historians argue that the symbol was included before the rise of Nazi Germany.“It was the cornerstone in Clem Van Rogers livery stable," Will Rogers Memorial Museum Public Relations Director Pat Reeder said. “They sold it for 0 and in 1936 they started this building and Will had already died and they decided to name it for him."It's a piece of history that's been around for more than 100 years and sits on the south side of the building at the Claremore Museum of History. "I think it’s offensive to me that someone would think that a cornerstone would be so hate-filled you’d have to remove it," Reeder said. The symbol on top of the cornerstone is under fire. “For Native Americans, it was very much life, earth and sun that’s what it meant to them," Reeder said.Reeder remembers it as a patch on soldiers uniforms of the 45th division in World War I, who were mostly from Oklahoma. “I couldn’t find anything that called it a name," she said. "I think it was given the name when Hitler decided he needed a symbol.” Reverend Mareo Johnson, a Black Lives Matter activist in Tulsa, Oklahoma, wants the cornerstone removed. “When you see it now it’s a public representation of hate and regardless of what it meant then it’s how people see it now," he said. Reverend Johnson says the meaning has changed overtime and wants any sign of hate removed. “The swastika sign is the main point and everything else is fine it’s that symbol that is connected to hate," he said. He wants the country to move forward. “I don’t believe that it will be too hard of a process because it’s very understandable," Rev. Johnson sad. Reeder argues that the monument has largely flown under the radar in the decades since it's been installed.Rev. Johnson says he plans to reach out and set up a meeting with the president of the museum to express his concerns. 2240
