SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Collaborative Clinical Trials Unit at UC San Diego has been selected to lead and administer an international seven-year, million grant for HIV/AIDS clinical trials.The National Institutes of Health selected UCSD, along with other American, South African and Indian research hospitals, as part of its seven-year HIV/AIDS funding renewal. Every seven years, NIH competitively renews its funding of the HIV clinical trials networks operating in the United States and internationally.During the current application process, the UC San Diego AntiViral Research Center, University of Colorado Hospital, Houston AIDS Research Team and Durban International clinical research sites were chosen to work collaboratively on research priorities for the NIH/National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases HIV/AIDS Adult Therapeutics Clinical Trials Network.The Chennai Antiviral Research and Treatment Center, University of Southern California and University of Miami clinical research sites were also chosen to join UCSD to serve as qualified reserve or protocol-specific sites as needed for future clinical trials."UC San Diego has helped shape HIV/AIDS research and treatment through innovative research since the inception of the adult and pediatric therapeutic clinical trials networks in 1986," said principal investigator Dr. Constance A. SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- San Diego Gas & Electric announced Monday that its residential customers will get a 5% reduction in pricing starting July 1 to help them deal with hot weather while spending more time at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.The new pricing for customers enrolled in the Time-of-Use DR1 pricing plan will last through Oct. 31 and applies to all three time-of-use periods: on- peak, off-peak and super off-peak, according to SDG&E.With the new pricing, a customer using an average of 400 kWh per month could see a bill decrease of about .80 per month, according to the company.For customers in the California Alternate Rates for Energy Program -- a bill discount program that offers a reduction of 30% or more on monthly bills -- an average usage of 400 kWh per month could see a bill decrease of about .96 per month with the new pricing.The California Public Utilities Commission recently approved the new pricing plan, which will also implement a 4% increase in pricing from Nov. 1 through May 31."Given the financial hardships the pandemic has caused, providing some bill relief to our customers as summer approaches was a priority for us, and we are appreciative that the CPUC agreed," said Dan Skopec, SDG&E's vice president of regulatory affairs. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 today to request guidance from the state on allowing resumption of several activities, including private planned events, wedding receptions, hotel conferences, street fairs and team competitions.In a letter to be sent to Gov. Gavin Newsom, the county will also seek guidance on reopening playgrounds.Supervisor Jim Desmond made the proposal after the board was updated on the county's efforts to contain the spread of the coronavirus.Any reopening of those industries, he and other board members said, would only happen with the blessing of Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer.He added that while the county must take note of an uptick in community outbreaks, it ``can't have a blanket stop on the economy.''``Maybe, by the time Newsom responds, there will be more time to review this. I want to be prepared with this next group of businesses,'' Desmond said.Because it takes months to plan certain events, such as weddings, planners ``will lose this entire season otherwise,'' Desmond said. ``We have one (board) meeting scheduled for July, and I'm trying to be ready if the numbers look good.''The supervisors also heard from numerous people employed in the private events industry, who urged the board to let them resume. The county ``has hit the community outbreak `trigger' for six consecutive days and recent days have generated not only the highest reporting of new COVID cases but also a doubling of the percentage of total tests being positive,'' Fletcher said after the vote. ``Given these facts, it is reckless and irresponsible to propose expedited reopening of additional in-door close contact group gatherings without any restrictions on the number of attendees.'' 2460
