SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The California Highway Patrol has ruled out street racing and DUI as causes of a crash on Interstate 805 in Sorrento Valley that left a man with serious injuries. Traffic came to a standstill in the northbound lanes of the freeway about 2 p.m. when a silver Mercedes SUV hit the driver of a blue Nissan. Witnesses told the CHP the Nissan suddenly stopped in a lane and the driver got out of the car. CHP says the Nissan became disabled and the driver got out of the car after pulling off to the side of the road. The Nissan’s driver was struck and thrown 135 feet before landing on the pavement. The CHP said the man had severe head injuries. A total of four cars were involved in the resulting pileup. Three people were taken to the hospital, San Diego Fire-Rescue reported, but no one aside from the Nissan's driver was seriously hurt. The other drivers stopped and cooperated with the investigation. The affected lanes of the freeway reopened about four hours after the crash. The Nissan was recently purchased, according to the CHP. Investigators said the driver might be a member of the military. 1127

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The mother of Rebecca Zahau testified Thursday in the second day of the civil lawsuit surrounding the Coronado mansion death.Rebecca Zahau died in July 2011. Her nude, bound body was found hanging from the balcony of the Spreckels mansion. The death was officially declared a suicide but Zahau's family disagreed. They filed a wrongful death civil lawsuit against Adam Shacknai, the brother of Zahau's boyfriend.Shacknai’s lawyers argue there is no physical, eyewitness, or scientific evidence linking him to Zahau’s death.Zahau's mother, Pari Zahau, took the witness stand Thursday morning and gave an emotional testimony as she was asked questions about her daughter. She remembered her as a sweet, loving and religious woman. The jury has three days off and will hear testimony again Monday. The family’s attorney Keith Greer handed Pari Zahau a piece of evidence and asked her to describe what it was.It was an envelope full of cash from Rebecca Zahau addressed to Pari Zahau and her late husband.Pari Zahau explained to the jury her daughter would support her financially by sending cash every month. That envelope was never sent, although one of the final times Pari Zahau talked to her daughter, she was told it would be on the way soon.Pari Zahau had to take a break from testifying when lawyer Keith Greer asked, “Did you ever think Rebecca would kill herself?”She gave a tearful response saying, “No. No, never. Never. My daughter? No. She is very sweet girl and she is very strong. No no, not suicide, they killed her.”After Pari Zahau broke down in tears, the lawyer asked for a brief break. The trial is expected to last a month. The Zahau’s family’s goal is to get the Sheriff’s Department to reopen a criminal investigation. 1802

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family of a missing Arizona grandmother believes that she may be heading to San Diego. On Monday, ABC10 News spoke to Aaron Richardson about his grandmother, Alice Fults, who was last seen on Friday morning in Chandler, Arizona. "You'd never think this would happen to you and for it to happen and [to] somebody you know totally tears you apart," he told ABC10 News.On Monday afternoon, Chandler Police confirmed that the 58-year-old stroke survivor and dementia patient got on a Greyhound bus on Friday morning that was bound for Los Angeles. Her family says that she could be trying to get to San Diego which is where she grew up and where her sister still lives. "She's from Lakeside so she always talked about Lakeside, California and how she wanted to go back to Lakeside," said Richardson.Fults has hearts with names tattooed on her legs and horseshoes tattooed on her arms. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Confederate monument at the center of an emotional debate has been removed from inside a city-owned cemetery in San Diego."It's a relief. I'm glad," said Amanda Bergara.Amid the recent protests aimed at racial injustice, Bergara was one of nearly 2,800 people to sign an online petition calling on San Diego's mayor to take down a confederate monument from inside Mount Hope Cemetery."It's a symbol of hate and disrespect for those who fought with their lives to end slavery," said Bergara.RELATED: Online petition seeks removal of Confederate memorial in San Diego cemeteryBuried in the cemetery are both Union and Confederate soldiers, who later lived in San Diego. The memorial, erected in 1948, names General Stonewall Jackson. In June, ABC 10News discovered the stone on the monument heavily damaged, with vandalism an ongoing issue. Unlike other Confederate markers removed in San Diego, the plot on which the monument sits is privately owned, and the city has maintained its hands are tied. The owner, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and supporters have said such markers are monuments to history. In the end, a city spokesperson says it was removed weeks ago at the request of the Confederate group, presumably to protect it from vandals. The monument is being stored by the city."Hopefully ending the hurt and pain for those who would have seen it and felt that hurt and pain. I hope it never sees the light of day," said Bergara. Not all the hurt is gone. A flagpole remains, along with a marker that includes the name, Stonewall Jackson. Bergara says that the marker must also go.ABC 10News reached out to the United Daughters of the Confederacy about their plans for the flagpole and future plans for the monument, and are waiting to hear back. 1790
