The head of the US Forest Service has resigned amid reports that the agency was looking into misconduct allegations against him."Many of you have seen the news reports which included the stories from women who told of their experiences with sexual harassment in the Forest Service. I admire their courage," Tony Tooke wrote in an email to employees.The email later adds, "In some of these news reports, you may have seen references to my own behavior in the past. This naturally raised questions about my record and prompted an investigation, which I requested and fully support, and with which I have cooperated."Tooke added: "I have been forthright during the review, but I cannot combat every inaccuracy that is reported in the news media. What I can control, however, are decisions I make today and the choice of a path for the future that is best for our employees, the Forest Service and the US Department of Agriculture. I must also think about what is best for my family. Therefore, I have decided that what is needed right now is for me to step down as Forest Service Chief and make way for a new leader that can ensure future success for all employees and the agency."PBS NewsHour, which recently published an investigation detailing sexual harassment at the Forest Service, first reported the news of his resignation Wednesday.The investigation into misconduct at the agency as a whole comes as the nation is facing a reckoning over sexual assault and harassment in the workplace.Congress has previously looked into harassment within the ranks of the US Department of Agriculture, of which the Forest Service is a part.Tooke's time as Forest Service chief began only recently, under President Donald Trump's tenure. The Mormon church is parting ways with the Boy Scouts of America after more than a century.In a joint statement Tuesday night, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Boy Scouts of America announced their decision to end their relationship next year after 105 years.The Boy Scouts serves about 330,000 Mormon youths, and the Mormon church is one of its largest sponsors."We have jointly determined that, effective on December 31, 2019, the church will conclude its relationship as a chartered organization with all Scouting programs around the world," the statement said.The Mormon church said it made the decision because it's expanded outside the United States, and wants to explore new youth programs that serve its international members.It will continue to work fully with the organization and support its goals and values until the end of next year. 878
The National Transportation Safety Board is finishing up its initial examination into the deadly Southwest Airlines engine failure Thursday -- but many questions remain unanswered.Investigators can't explain with certainty why the left engine of Southwest Airlines Flight 1380 malfunctioned when the plane was reaching over 32,000 feet. It's too soon to determine what happened, said National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Robert Sumwalt."I know people would want answers right away. The math is simple. If President Donald Trump wins the same states he won four years ago, he'll be president of the United States for four more years. But sweeping the swing states of Florida, Arizona, Texas, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio may be more difficult a second time around. "We only lost it by 1.4%, 44,000 votes," Gidley added. Unlike four years ago, Trump is investing in the state. He has already made campaign stops there. "They have the largest campaign on the ground in the state of Minnesota," Martin said, speaking about the Trump campaign. The holidays are right around the corner, but Walmart won't be hiring for help.The retailer plans to meet its need for extra work during the holiday shopping season by giving existing employees more hours, according to a release from the company.Hiring seasonal holiday help is a tradition in retail. Walmart rival Target has already announced plans to bring on 100,000 temporary holiday workers.But Walmart's move is a sign of the tightening labor market which has made it difficult for employers to fill open positions. There were a record number of unfilled job openings nationwide in the latest government reading of the labor market. More than 600,000 of the open positions were from retail.It also can be seen as part of the effort by Walmart, the nation's largest private sector employer, to make jobs there more attractive and to cutdown on turnover.The company announced a series of pay raises for its lowest paid employees in early 2015, which took the minimum pay for most employees to an hour by last year, and the average pay for its full-time workers to about an hour.
