SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State University is celebrating yet another MVP athlete on one of sports' biggest stages.Wednesday, former SDSU baseball ace Stephen Strasburg was award the 2019 World Series MVP award after the Washington Nationals won Game 7 against the Houston Astros.As special an honor as that is, the award also means SDSU has two former players that have been named MVP in their respective sports — in the same season. In June, former Aztec star and then-Toronto Raptor Kawhi Leonard was named the NBA Finals MVP. The pair of postseason MVP awards in the same season are a first for the university. 625

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - South Bay Pentecostal Church has been involved in a legal battle since May regarding worshiping indoors, and officials think Friday could be the light at the end of the tunnel.Senior Pastor Arthur Hodges believes during a motions hearing Friday morning the church will be granted permission to reopen indoors.His hope comes from the latest rulings by several judges.On Dec. 3, the Supreme Court ruled places of worship in New York could reopen, saying restrictions meant to curb the pandemic violated the First Amendment of the Constitution.After that ruling, the high court issued an unsigned order to California judges to reconsider Gov. Gavin Newsom's restrictions.On Wednesday, a judge ruled restaurants could reopen indoors in San Diego."That absolutely makes us hopeful, and I've told restaurateurs, business owners, whatever, we're fighting for you, too. Now we have a bigger gun than they do. We've got the Constitution, OK; they don't have that. but they're finding ways to get around it with the right to assemble," Hodges said.Hodges said back in May their initial lawsuit was voted down 5-4 by the Supreme Court.Hodges believes under a high court that shifted majority when Judge Amy Coney Barrett replaced the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg, they will prevail."If religious liberties are lost, you can mark it down your personal liberties are going to be lost," Hodges said, arguing this lawsuit is to protect more than places of worship.Hodges said if they win this legal battle it will pave the way for the rest of the country. 1563

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police released a composite sketch Wednesday in the search for a man who carjacked a woman at Fashion Valley Mall. The 57-year-old victim was walking to her car in the west parking lot near JCPenney Monday at 1:45 p.m. when the man approached her from behind, police said. The man put a knife to the woman’s neck and demanded her car keys and wallet. Officers said she turned over the items, at which point the man got into her 2017 white Nissan Sentra and drove away. The Sentra was later recovered, according to police. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Scientists at the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute are working to replenish the California Halibut population.In October, they released 2,300 juvenile halibut into Mission Bay. Those fish were bred, born and raised at the institute. They hope it's just the start of a robust replenishment program."The species is pretty heavily depleted and for that reason, they're a good candidate to help boost the species," says Mark Drawbridge, the Institute's Director of the Sustainable Seafood Program.Recent surveys show the California Halibut is down to 14 percent of what its population should be. The most severe drop has come in Southern California.Hubbs hopes it can replicate the success it had with the White Seabass. It has released nearly 2.5 million seabass into the wild in the last 35 years."A lot of the process is transferable from one species to another," says Drawbridge.The Dick Laub Fisheries Replenishment Program oversees every step of the process, from breeding to release. Drawbridge says they've seen success in every phase so far."Our survival rates from egg to juvenile stage are typically 20 percent or higher," he says. "Compare that to the wild, where it would be a fraction of a percent. That's more than adequate to produce tens of thousands of fish."The next step is seeing how the halibut survive in the wild. The Institute put stainless steel trackers in each fish and will monitor them over the next few years.The program is funded through private donations, many of which come from fisherman who need a healthy halibut population to make a living. 1602

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego-based Qualcomm is bringing tech companies together this week to showcase innovations in technology at its Smart Cities event. Zee Munir is in San Diego to display a giant touchscreen system. It puts everything teachers need for lessons at their fingertips. Teachers can record lessons and even have an extra set of eyes. “The cameras would show whether the student is paying attention or not dozing off or not,” Munir said. The first-of-its-kind event is designed to make it easier for governments to identify and use the smart innovations, which include parking meters, license plates, and even vacuums. Snajeet Pandit of Qualcomm said San Diego is where much of the smart tech begins. “San Diego compared to other cities adopted tech much faster rather than waiting and watching so they are at the cutting edge of deploying tech,” Pandit said. 882
