They found a cup of coffee on an empty stomach could impair control of blood sugar levels.Some good news, the scientists, writing in the British Journal of Nutrition, say that one night of poor sleep has a limited impact on a person’s metabolism when compared to a normal night sleep.However, drinking coffee first thing can have a negative effect on glucose metabolism by around 50 percent, researchers found.“We know that nearly half of us will wake in the morning and, before doing anything else, drink coffee – intuitively the more tired we feel, the stronger the coffee,” said Professor James Betts, Co-Director of the Centre for Nutrition, Exercise and Metabolism at the University of Bath who oversaw the work.Study participants underwent tests where they had either normal or disrupted nights sleep, followed by coffee or a glucose drink representing the calories in an average carbohydrate breakfast about an hour after they woke up.Then their glucose and insulin levels were taken.“Put simply, our blood sugar control is impaired when the first thing our bodies come into contact with is coffee especially after a night of disrupted sleep. We might improve this by eating first and then drinking coffee later if we feel we still need it. Adnan Syed, the subject of the groundbreaking true crime podcast Serial, has been granted to a new trial by the Maryland Court of Special Appeals, according to the Associated Press.In 2016, a Baltimore City Circuit Court vacated Syed's conviction in the murder of Hae Min Lee. The state then appealed the ruling. According to the Baltimore Sun, the state can still appeal to the Maryland Court of Appeals. It's unclear if the state will choose to do so.Syed was convicted of killing Hae Min Lee in 2000. American Airlines has sent out letters to roughly 25,000 employees about possible layoffs and furloughs. The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification letters, as they are called, are required by law 60 days before layoffs or furloughs are anticipated.The letters from the airline specifically say they are taking this step because of “overages we may start to see Oct. 1 when our Payroll Support Program funding expires.”They reference customer revenues being down 80 percent in June 2020 compared to June 2019. The company says they have 20,000 more employees on payroll than they “will need to operate our smaller schedule this fall.”American says they hope to lessen the number of furloughs by offering employees opportunities like extended leave and early retirement. "We know American will be smaller going forward and we must right-size all aspects of our airline to adjust to that new reality," the letter said. United Airlines sent nearly 36,000 similar letters to employees earlier this month. A woman who injured three people during a shooting at YouTube headquarters in Northern California has been identified as Nasim Najafi Aghdam.Aghdam, 39, was a resident of San Diego, the San Bruno Police Department said in a statement. After shooting three people at the campus in San Bruno on Tuesday, she killed herself with a handgun, authorities said. A fourth person injured an ankle while escaping the gunfire on campus.Aghdam's brother, who didn't want to be identified, told CNN affiliate KGTV that he didn't know she had a gun. 543
