CUSICK, Wa. — The Kalispel Tribe of Indians has a culture forged in the mountains of Washington. It's a culture that generations have spent passing down, and now, because of COVID-19, sharing the ancient Salish language and the way of this tribe is getting tougher.JR Bluff started a language program to not only teach adults Salish but to teach children the language in a unique, immersion school. The young students will spend a half-day at the public school across the street, then will come to the Salish school to take on all the usual subjects, which is taught in Salish.Bluff saw great success with the program and hoped, despite the pandemic, the school could continue teaching students in-person. He feared video classes would leave many students behind. So, the school began the year in person, hoping all the safety measures they were taking would protect their students and staff. For months, it worked."It didn’t really hit us hard until this winter," said teacher Jessie Isadore. But then, she said, all at once, the virus ripped through their small community. "Seven of our eight teachers have tested positive," said JR Bluff. "Pretty much, it woke people up, and it wasn’t just our school, it hit our community pretty strong."Bluff moved the school to remote instruction and said they will reassess in January if they are able to bring students and staff back safely."Of course, we have hope that the new year will bring in health, and we will be able to safely open the doors, and once we do, the students we lost who re-enrolled with Cusick will be back in the seat with us," said Isadore. Many of the students could not stay enrolled at the Salish school because their parents work and cannot help them with remote learning, so the immersion program is facing lower enrollment, too."Kind of in my life, I’ve always viewed hurdles, trees in the middle of the path, cricks to cross, mountains to go over, we’re kind of used to this," said Bluff. "Us saying, 'This is just a bump and we’re gonna get through this,' is what our students need.""We’re not able to come together and gather like we used to, and sharing is a big part of who we are, but like JR said, that’s not going to stop our efforts to preserve our language and culture for generations to come. We're doing what we can and were going to figure it out," said Isadore.Bluff said the online video classes are working for now, and he and his staff were pleasantly surprised to find that more families and parents are engaging with the Salish language while their kids are learning from home. Bluff said he hopes the silver lining of remote learning will be even more adults enrolling into the adult language program. In the end, Bluff wants to preserve the sacred language and the culture he was born to carry, and he knows, no matter what, this pandemic will not stop his mission. 2867

Consumers, especially men, should not purchase or use two e-cigarette liquids that contain popular erectile dysfunction drugs, the Food and Drug Administration warned Tuesday.The two HelloCig e-liquids contain tadalafil and sildenafil, the main ingredients in two of the most popular male enhancement drugs on the market, the FDA said. "These FDA-approved prescription drugs are not approved for inclusion in e-liquid products sold over the counter and are therefore being sold illegally."By not properly labeling the e-liquids, the agency said, the company was not providing adequate warnings for the protection of users, specifically anyone with erectile dysfunction, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol or heart disease who take nitrates to manage their condition."These undeclared ingredients may interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs such as nitroglycerin and may lower blood pressure to dangerous levels," the FDA said in its warning.A lab analysis found both sildenafil and tadalafil in E-Cialis HelloCig E-Liquid and sildenafil in E-Rimonabant HelloCig E-Liquid, both sold by Shanghai-based HelloCig Electronic Technology Co. Ltd.The company has not responded to a request for comment.Although no adverse events have been reported to the agency, all consumers should stop using the products immediately, the FDA said, and anyone who experiences side effects should report them to the FDA's MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program.The FDA says it sent a warning letter to HelloCig in October, citing a number of concerns about illegal marketing claims. HelloCig was misbranding and selling its products in the United States as an "FDA approved product with FDA," in violation of federal rules."FDA recently warned HelloCig of these issues and contacted the company several times to recommend they recall these products due to the risks to consumers. However, HelloCig has not responded to the agency's recommendation," the agency said in its warning.Bottles of E-Cialis HelloCig E-Liquid were sold with an image of a Cialis bottle and tablets, while advertisements on Twitter and Tumbir showed "a partially undressed couple embracing," the FDA says. It is amazing LOL."Though E-Rimonabant HelloCig E-Liquid contains the same active ingredient as Viagra, the FDA said HelloCig was marketing it with an image of an Acomplia container and tablets."Acomplia is the tradename of the anti-obesity drug product in Europe," the FDA warned. "Using the tradename of the drug product Acomplia and including an image of the Acomplia container and tablets next to the product on your website suggests that the product is intended to treat obesity."HelloCig did not respond to the initial warning, the FDA said.The manufacturers of Cialis has not responded to requests for comment. CORONADO, Calif., (KGTV) — Despite recent shark sighting, thousands of people headed to the beach for the pre-holiday weekend. But instead of sharks, dozens of people left the beach after being stung by stingrays.Beautiful Coronado is home to majestic creatures, including great white sharks. "We do think that the great white shark populations are increasing," Heidi Dewar, research biologist at the Southwest Fisheries Science Center said. She believes the population increase is linked to the implementation of fishing regulations in the 1990s. "In 1994, California pushed all the net-based fisheries outside of state water, which is three nautical miles out. And what that did was that basically protected most of the nursery habitat of the juvenile sharks on the coast," Dewar said. "About the same time, the UN banned these high seas directed at fisheries, which were killing some adult white sharks."Last week, two juvenile white sharks were spotted about a half a mile offshore from the Coronado coast. There were no shark attacks like the one last year in Encinitas, where a 13-year-old boy was bitten in the shoulder while lobster spearfishing. Still, the city officials in Coronado notified beachgoers to be on the lookout. That did not stop 11-year-old Tobias Appel from diving in." We just came here to boogie board and have a bunch of fun," Tobias said. He and his family from Phoenix are vacationing in Coronado. They were having a great time until Tobias was stung by a stingray."Today is not my lucky day," Tobias said. This was his first time getting stung by a ray. We met him as he was sticking his foot into a hot water bath at the lifeguard station. "It is under. Right there," he said. In the hour Tobias was at the lifeguard station neutralizing the venom, we saw several others being carried in for emergency treatment. Lifeguards said warm water, low tide, and a packed beach is the perfect formula for a stingray warning. "One of the most amazing things about the ocean is that right there we have wilderness," Dewar said. "And with the wilderness, we have wild animals. So that's definitely a side of the ocean that people need to keep in mind when they go swimming or surfing."Biologists say remember, this summer when you are going to the beach, you are stepping into the animals' homes. So do not forget to be respectful and careful, while you are having fun. Meanwhile, Tobias has one more day in Coronado before he leaves for Phoenix. He hopes to enjoy what he can.
