ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) — Opening a new small business in the middle of this pandemic is a risky move, but San Diegans are doing it. Candles on Tap in downtown Encinitas is taking the chance."Today is a big, nerve-wracking, exciting day but we are opening to the public," CEO and co-founder Chantel Johnson said. She and CFO and co-founder Marcus Wandell are hopeful about their new venture. "The feature event is the scent bar where you pull up a chair and pour your own blend," said Wandell. Johnson added, "We are a custom scent bar so when people come in, they’re able to hand pour their own soy candles, diffusers, and fragrance sprays and they get to choose from over 90 scents." Wandell says some of his personal favorites in their shop include a scent called "old books" and they also have a "cannabis" smell.The two are well aware of what they’re getting into. "We're opening in the middle of a pandemic and it's a brick and mortar store so what could go wrong, right?" Wandell said jokingly.Yet, they say they see this time as the perfect opportunity. “There's pent up energy and demand to get out and do something as long as it’s safe so we're seizing on that need in the community for folks to find an experience to do with their loved ones and friends,” says Wandell.The pair are not alone. The U.S. Census reports almost 3.3 million business applications have been filed this year which is up 700,000 from this time last year. There were reportedly more than 1.6 million quarterly applications. In California alone, week 43 saw almost 9,000 applications which is a 25% increase from this time last year.“Some of our friends [say we’re] so brave. This is a bold move but everyone's really excited for us,” added Johnson.Candles on Tap is located at 687 S Coast Hwy 101 Unit 155 in Encinitas. FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) — An 8-year-old child was killed Friday after being hit by a vehicle while walking with family in Fallbrook.The child was walking across the entrance to a parking lot on Heald Lane at about 6:30 p.m., when a vehicle turned into the parking lot and struck the child, according to California Highway Patrol.Paramedics arrived rushed the child to Rady Children's Hospital, however, the 8-year-old died on the way to the hospital.Two family members were with the child when the crash occurred. The driver of the vehicle, identified as a 58-year-old woman, remained at the scene.Drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be a factor, CHP said.The child and driver were not immediately identified. 746

ESCONDIDO (KGTV) - In one of the closest races this election cycle in San Diego County, Escondido Mayor Sam Abed added nine votes to his narrow lead Tuesday. He now holds a 29-vote advantage over challenger Paul McNamara.Abed is seeking a third term as mayor, first winning in 2010. He was previously a councilman from 2004-2010.Political analyst John Dadian told 10News he did not anticipate the race being so close. "I did not see it coming, so I am suprised. Going into the last week of the campaign, all the people I talked to that really know that area well, they did not see this coming."Dadian feels several factors are playing a role in tightening the race. He cites changing demographics in Escondido, pulling away from the city's long-time conservative majority. Another conservative incumbent, Ed Gallo, appears to be losing his seat, as well.In addition, Democrats in the region had a large turnout, based largely on the unsuccessful effort to oust Congressman Duncan Hunter. That large turnout may have had a down-ballot effect on the mayoral race.Dadian also sites Abed's controversial stance on immigration, leading Escondido's bid to support efforts against California's sanctuary laws and visiting the White House for a highly-publicized meeting with President Trump. Dadian believes that may have helped enthuse opposition against Abed.As of Tuesday night, Registrar of Voters Michael Vu says there are still 299,000 ballots to count county-wide. It is not known how many of those belong to Escondido voters, meaning it will likely be several days until the winner is known. 1630

FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) — A Fallbrook woman was killed in a hit-and-run crash late Friday.The 56-year-old Fallbrook resident was walking on East Alvarado St. near Alvarado Ct. just before 9 p.m. when she was hit by a vehicle in the eastbound lane, according to California Highway Patrol.She was taken to Palomar Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. Her name has not been released and it's not clear why the woman was in the street.The vehicle that hit the woman fled the area heading eastbound. ESTERO, Fla. — A Florida man saved his dog from certain death after he wrestled an alligator that snatched the puppy and dragged the pooch into a pond."He just came out like a missile," 74-year-old Richard Wilbanks of Estero said of the gator that attacked Gunner, his cavalier King Charles spaniel.Wilbanks jumped into the water, pried open the gator's mouth and freed Gunner from the gator's jaws.The rescue was caught on camera by the Florida Wildlife Federation.Wilbanks told CNN that his hands were "just chewed up," but Gunner is doing OK."We live on a shared landscape," Florida Wildlife Federation spokeswoman Meredith Budd told WINK-TV in Fort Myers.
