A study released Wednesday by the British Medical Journal claims that vegetarians could have a higher risk of a stroke than meat eaters. The study followed more than 48,000 participants in the UK for nearly 18 years. The study placed participants in three groups: Meat eaters, fish eaters and vegetarians. The study claims that vegetarians were 20 percent more likely to have a stroke than meat eaters, which equaled to be three additional haemorrhagic stroke victims per 1,000 participants. Before you change your eating habits, you should know that meat eaters were more likely to develop a heart disease than vegetarians. The difference between meat eaters and vegetarians was 10 additional cases of heart disease per 1,000 participants. According to the British Medical Journal, previous studies on the correlation between a vegetarian diet and strokes only reported stroke mortality. In those studies, there was no significant difference between vegetarians and meat eaters in stroke mortality. The study did adjust for self reported high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, diabetes, and body mass index, which suggests that part of the associations might be attributed to these factors, it says."However, the lower risk in vegetarians and vegans remained marginally significant after adjustment for all of these factors," the study said.To read the full study, click 1389

A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake swayed buildings and cracked streets and foundations in Southern California on Friday night, sending terrified residents into the streets a day after another quake hit.The latest earthquake Friday struck 11 miles northeast of Ridgecrest, according to the US Geological Survey. It was five times bigger and 11 times stronger than Thursday's 6.4 -magnitude earthquake, also centered near Ridgecrest, CNN Meteorologist Brandon Miller said. There's been an average of one aftershock per minute since Friday's quake in the southern part of the state, according to the US Geological Survey website.Gas leaks caused structure fires throughout Ridgecrest, residents reported water main breaks, and power and communications were out in some areas, according to Mark Ghilarducci, director of the Governors' Office of Emergency Management.Several injuries were reported, according to Kern County spokeswoman Megan Person, but Kern County Fire Chief David Witt told reporters there were no known fatalities.About 130 residents from Bakersfield and Trona were staying in a temporary shelter, Person said."On behalf of all Californians, I offer my heartfelt support to those affected by tonight's earthquake near Ridgecrest," Gov. Gavin Newsom said Saturday. The governor said he requested a presidential emergency declaration for assistance. No power or water in San Bernardino townThe San Bernardino County Fire Department said it received multiple reports of damage as well from northwest communities."Homes shifted, foundation cracks, retaining walls down," the department said. "One injury (minor) with firefighters treating patient."Trona, a town of 2,000 people, does not have power or water, San Bernardino County Fire spokesman Jeremy Kern told CNN. Workers had been restoring power from the initial earthquake when Friday's disrupted power again. Both earthquakes disrupted the main water system. Officials are bringing in water to residents and fire teams. No injuries have been reported in the town.'You couldn't stand... without falling over'Ridgecrest resident Jaye Krona said the earthquake felt like her "rocking chair gone crazy.""We had to sit down or crawl on hands and knees to get around because you couldn't stand up and be in an upright position without falling over," Krona said.Krona and her friend Kelly-Jo Lewis spent the night outside on Lewis' driveway."With everything shaking, things are falling. It's just not safe," Lewis said. "I felt safer outside, and I felt me and her were safer together being in pairs."It lasted longer than Thursday's earthquakeBakersfield resident Giovanna Gomez was at home with her family when their house swayed and the water in her pool overflowed. They ran outside."It was about a minute long," she said. "Far larger than the one that (happened) yesterday. It was a smooth roll going back and forth."Bakersfield is in Kern County, about 110 miles from Ridgecrest. Donald Castle, who lives in Porterville, west of Ridgecrest, said his house shook for nearly 25 seconds."It was more of a shake than what we had on the Fourth. It lasted longer and was more rolling," he said.Calls for medical helpNo reports of major gas leaks or serious injuries have been reported, Kern County Fire Chief David Witt said. But calls came in for ambulance and medical assistance. In Los Angeles, about 150 miles south of Ridgecrest, residents felt the earth shake, but no reports of serious damage were made, Mayor Eric Garcetti said. The Los Angeles County Fire Department reported no major damage, deaths or serious injuries, but said some wires were down and power was out in some locations.Shaking felt in Mexico and Las VegasThe shaking was felt as far away as Mexico and Las Vegas, according to the USGS.The NBA Summer League game between the New Orleans Pelicans and the New York Knicks in Las Vegas was postponed Friday following reports of the quake. Scoreboards and speakers near the ceiling of the arena shook when the earthquake hit.Quakes are part of an ongoing systemCalTech seismologist Lucy Jones said Friday both earthquakes are part of an ongoing sequence of a "very energetic system."The latest 7.1-magnitude earthquake was the mainshock, while Thursday's 6.4-magnitude quake was a foreshock, according to Jones. In addition to being bigger, Miller said it released more than 11 times the amount of energy than the 6.4 one.More earthquakes are possible. Newsom said he has activated the state emergency operation center to its highest level."The state is coordinating mutual aid to local first responders," he tweeted Friday night. On Saturday morning, the USGS said the chance of another 7-magnitude or higher earthquake is only 3%-- possible but with a low probability. On the other hand, the chance of a 3-magnitude or higher earthquake hitting the area is over 99%."It is most likely that as few as 240 or as many as 410 such earthquakes may occur in the case that the sequence is re-invigorated by a larger aftershock," the 5016

American Airlines plans to cancel flights well into April because of the Boeing 737 Max grounding.American, the world's largest airline, said Sunday it is canceling about 90 flights a day out through April 24. Before Sunday's announcement, American had only canceled flights through March 28.The airline is hopeful that that the 737 Max planes will be flying again soon, but said it is canceling flights about a month out as it waits for word from the Federal Aviation Administration."Canceling in advance provides additional availability and rebooking options for our customers," said the statement from American. The global fleet of 371 of the 737 Max jets was grounded indefinitely on March 13 after two of the planes had fatal crashes. A Lion Air flight crashed in October and an Ethiopian Airlines flight crashed on March 10.The causes of the crashes have yet to be determined but the focus has been on an automatic safety feature which may have forced the nose of each plane lower when it incorrectly believed the plane was in danger of going into a stall.Boeing and the FAA said they are working on an upgrade of its software to deal with that safety feature. Boeing said at the time of the grounding that it expected that update to be available "within weeks."American has 24 of the 737 Max 8 jets. But not every flight which had been scheduled to have a 737 Max has been canceled. American said it has rearranged its schedule to use other aircraft to complete some of those flights."We have balanced [cancellations] across our system," said the airline. It said both international and domestic flights are affected. "We will vary by day as we look to impact the fewest number of customers."American operates 3,300 flights its mainline system daily on average, and another 3,400 through regional carriers and partner airlines.Other carriers are not canceling nearly that far out.Southwest Airlines, which has 34 737 Max jets, said it is only canceling five days out at this point. It said it is also trying to rework the schedule to affect the fewest possible number of customers. 2099

A Pennsylvania couple is facing felony theft charges after their bank accidentally put 0,000 in their account, and the couple spent most of it instead of contacting the bank, police said.Robert and Tiffany Williams of Montoursville are also facing overdraft fees from the bank of about 7,000, according to the criminal complaint filed in the Lycoming County magisterial district court. In an interview with law enforcement, Tiffany Williams said the money was spent on an SUV, a camper, two four wheelers and a car trailer, among other things, according to an affidavit. The bank error occurred May 31 when a customer in Georgia made a deposit of 0,000, and the BB&T Bank teller entered a wrong account number. When the customer contacted the bank to ask about the missing deposit, investigators discovered the funds had gone into the Williams' joint account, the affidavit said."While we can't comment on the specifics of this issue due to client privacy practices, we always work as quickly as possible to address any issue that affects our clients," Brian Davis, a spokesman for BB&T, told CNN in a statement."We're also continuously working to enhance our client service and operating procedures to provide the best client experience possible."The bank tried to call the couple several timesWhen Tiffany Williams was contacted by the bank on June 21, she said "she no longer had the funds because she had already paid off bills," the affidavit said. Some of the money also went to pay bills and for car repairs, and the couple gave ,000 to "friends in need of money," Tiffany Williams told investigators, according to the affidavit.Tiffany Williams told the bank she would try to come up with a repayment agreement for the money owed, but the bank wasn't able to contact the couple after that June 21 phone conversation, the affidavit said. The bank credited the correct account with the 0,000 and debited the same amount from the incorrect one, the affidavit said. Both Tiffany and Robert Williams told investigators they knew the money didn't belong to them, according to the affidavit.Reached by CNN under a phone number listed in public records for Robert Williams, a man who didn't identify himself said he had "no comment about that at this time," and doesn't yet know the name of the public defender in the case.Nate Weaver, a neighbor of the couple, told 2397
