SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego firefighter who allegedly raped a 17- year-old girl was ordered Friday to stand trial on four felony sexual assault counts.Justin Curtis Price, 35, a fire engineer-paramedic who has been with the city public-safety agency for 10 years, was arrested in late April for the alleged Nov. 1, 2018, sexual encounter.Prosecutors allege Price had known the teen since she was about 9 or 10 years old. She turned 17 about two weeks prior to the incident.RELATED: San Diego Fire engineer charged with sexually assaulting teenPrice allegedly admitted to the rape in text messages with the girl's mother, according to preliminary hearing testimony.San Diego Police Detective Jeremy Margolis testified that he interviewed the victim, who said Price told her not to tell anyone about what happened, and that it would be "our little secret."Price is custody on 0,000 bail and faces five years in state prison if convicted of one count each of unlawful sex with a minor and sexual penetration with a foreign object, and two counts of oral copulation with a minor, according to Deputy District Attorney Jessica Coto. He's due back in court Oct. 23 for a Superior Court arraignment.Price was initially placed on unpaid leave from the fire department pending an internal investigation, but San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokeswoman Monica Munoz said Friday that Price was no longer employed by the city. 1428

SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- Hundreds of thousands of San Diegans are expected to cast their ballots in person today, Election Day, with over 1 million ballots already received. The San Diego County Registrar of Voters said more than 1.1 million ballots have been received and nearly 60,000 residents have voted early in-person as of Monday, well more than double when compared to this point in the 2016 presidential election.Of the 1.95 million registered voters in the county, 1,114,627 had already turned in their ballots as of election eve. Over the weekend, 44,370 residents cast early votes at the county's polling locations and another 10,391 have voted early at the registrar's office since Oct. 5.ELECTION 2020: Latest Results, Key Races & Ballot MeasuresMail-in ballots were sent to all registered voters in the county on Oct. 5, even those who had not requested one.Voters who prefer to cast their ballots at their assigned polling place on Election Day can do so between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. Tuesday. An in-person voting location tool can be found on the county's voting website, SDvote.com.The day before the 2016 election, San Diego County had recorded 507,127 mail ballot returns. More than a million people voted that year for a voter turnout of 81%.Registrar Michael Vu anticipates turnout of anywhere between 80 and 85%, or 1,559,260 to 1,656,710 voters, in San Diego County this time around. That could mean anywhere from 389,870 to 487,320 residents could cast ballots in person Tuesday -- depending on how many cast ballots by the end of the day Monday -- at one of the county's 235 "Super Poll" locations. In the 2012 election, 77% of eligible voters cast a ballot. In the 2018 and 2014 Gubernatorial Elections, just 66% and 45% -- respectively -- of the electorate voted.During the March primary, about 1,600 polling locations were open to the public. The COVID-19 pandemic caused that number to shrink considerably. Even so, more than 4,000 poll workers will manage locations such as SDSU's Viejas Arena, the San Diego Convention Center, Rincon and Sycuan tribal halls and the Walnut Grove Park Red Barn in an Marcos. The 235 polling locations represent 572 polling precincts.Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the registrar's office encourages older adults and people with underlying medical conditions to avoid long lines and crowded polling places by voting early.Vu said his office is working with county public health services to ensure the health and safety of election workers and voters. Personal protective equipment and sanitation supplies will be provided to staffers so they can conduct the election process safely.Voters casting ballots in person are instructed to bring a face mask and plan to maintain social distance.Locations of vote centers were chosen and configured to allow for queuing and voting while maintaining six feet of social distance. Masks will be required inside, but residents unable or unwilling to wear them will be allowed to vote curbside.Officials noted that the need to social distance may create longer lines than usual at in-person locations. 3093

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Military officials today publicly identified a U.S. Marine who was fatally injured in a weekend training accident at Camp Pendleton.Staff Sgt. Joshua Braica, 29, was behind the wheel of a MRZR tactical vehicle that overturned Saturday at the military station north of Oceanside, according to Maj. Nicholas Mannweiler of U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Special Operations Command. Two other Marines suffered minor injuries in the crash.Braica, a critical-skills operator with 1st Marine Raider Battalion, was airlifted to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, where he succumbed to his injuries Sunday evening. The Sacramento native enlisted in the Marine Corps in July 2010 and served as an intelligence specialist with 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, and with Marine Aircraft Group 36.Braica deployed to the Pacific Command area of operations with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit in 2011, and to the Indo-Pacific Command region with 1st Marine Raider Battalion in 2017.His military decorations include a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, two Good Conduct Medals, a National Defense Service Medal, a Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, a Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and three Sea Service Deployment Ribbons. He is survived by his wife and son. 1284

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman driving on a suspended license who had more than three times the legal blood-alcohol limit when she crashed her SUV head-on into another vehicle while driving her three young daughters through Rancho Bernardo was sentenced Thursday to 14 years in state prison. Mayra Alejandra Gonzalez, 30, -- on probation for a prior DUI -- had a .29% blood-alcohol content when she drove on the wrong side of Camino del Norte Nov. 12, 2018. Her SUV crashed head-on into an oncoming 2011 Jeep Liberty, causing severe injuries -- including a skull fracture and a brain bleed -- to her 9- month-old daughter, who was riding unrestrained. The defendant's 2-year-old daughter suffered facial injuries and her 8-year-old daughter broke a bone. The 57-year-old driver of the other car suffered broken bones and underwent five surgeries to treat his injuries. RELATED: Mother arrested for wrong-way DUI crash that injured childrenDeputy District Attorney Ramona McCarthy told the court at Thursday's sentencing that Gonzalez was drinking throughout the day on Nov. 12 and driving with her kids in her vehicle on a trip that stretched from North San Diego County to East County and back. She crashed into a signpost and a parked car, and backed into a wall prior to the crash that led to her conviction, the prosecutor said. ``She put alcohol and what she wanted to do above the safety of her children and the safety of the community,'' McCarthy told the court. Considering the condition of her then-9-month-old, who still uses a feeding tube to this day as a result of the crash, McCarthy said ``It's a miracle (Gonzalez) is not here on a murder charge.'' RELATED: Mom pleads guilty to Rancho Bernardo DUI crash that injured her daughtersGonzalez was arrested the day after the collision at Palomar Medical Center. At the time of the crash, she was on probation and driving on a suspended license due to a 2017 North County DUI, in which she crashed while pregnant and with at least one of her children riding in the vehicle. She had .23% blood-alcohol content in that case. Gonzalez, who pleaded guilty in August to felony child abuse and drunk driving charges, addressed the court, asking for leniency and the chance to see her family sooner. ``My children are my world, my reason for living,'' said Gonzalez, adding she was ``very, very remorseful'' for the crash. RELATED: Mother of three going to prison for DUI crashShe said she's since taken numerous classes on parenting and alcohol abuse in an attempt to better herself and would never drink and drive again. San Diego County Superior Court Judge Laura W. Halgren said she believed Gonzalez was remorseful for what happened, but said deterring others from making the same mistakes and taking Gonzalez's history of drinking and driving into account factored into imposing a higher sentence. 2860

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man suspected of fatally shooting the mother of his infant son along with the child's grandmother at the women's Otay Mesa home over the weekend has been found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in Baja California, authorities said Tuesday.Mexican authorities found the body of 31-year-old Justice Love Peace in a vehicle on Monday, according to San Diego police. His death is believed to have been a suicide.Peace, also known as Jeremiah Alfred Horton, allegedly killed 37-year-old Elizabeth Stolz and her 65-year-old mother, Debora, during a custody dispute that erupted Sunday after he arrived at their residence in the 4300 block of Ebersole Drive to pick up the baby for visitation."This appears to be a tragic case of domestic violence," San Diego Police Lt. Matt Dobbs said.Officers responding to a report of a loud disturbance and gunfire found the women mortally wounded and the child gone.Peace, who was married to another woman, dropped his son off with his wife at her Rolando-area home before fleeing to Mexico, according to police. The child has been placed in protective custody at Polinsky Children's Center, a county-run shelter in Kearny Mesa. 1202
