EL CAJON, Calif., (KGTV) — The combination of good old fashioned police work and advancements in DNA science helped put an Oregon man behind bars after he killed a La Mesa man in 2006. Today, Hon. Judge Robert Amador announced Zachary Bunney's sentence: 12 years in a California prison for voluntary manslaughter. Before his sentence was announced, Bunney read an apology letter to the family of Scott Martinez. "I just wanted to say I'm sorry for the pain that this has caused the Martinez family. If I could go back in time and change the course of events that led to this, I would. I know that words cannot bring back to life, but I am truly sorry."Bunney referred to the night of June 27, 2006. La Mesa Police said Bunney went into 47-year-old Scott Martinez's apartment and used a sword to stab Martinez 30 times, killing him. For 12 years, Bunney evaded police, and the case went cold. Until this January, investigators linked the killer's DNA left on a bloody tissue paper, to Bunney's distant relative who was registered on a public genealogy database. "The defendant's DNA was uploaded into the system," Deputy District Attorney Brian Erickson said. "A relative of his had uploaded her DNA, and then they do the family tree backwards, and they were able to trace it through that."Detectives discovered that the DNA on the bloody tissue belonged to Oregon resident Zachary Bunney. "I didn't think anything like this would be what cracked the case," Martinez's daughter, Angelina Panek said. By November, Bunney pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. In exchange for dismissing the murder charge, his stipulated agreement was that he would get 12 years in state prison. "The amount of years that he was on the run, and this is the amount of years he is going to be given as a sentence. It was a sign. And I had to take it," Panek said. Panek said she will always wear her father's ashes in her special necklace, knowing that he is watching over her and her family. "I'm just grateful that this day has come. Echoing sentiments shared before Thanksgiving, the CDC is pleading with Americans to stay home this holiday season to slow the spread of the coronavirus."The best thing for Americans to do in the upcoming holiday season is to stay at home and not travel,'' said Dr. Henry Walke, CDC's COVID-19 incident manager, during a news briefing Wednesday."Cases are rising. Hospitalizations are increasing, Deaths are increasing. We need to try to bend the curve, stop this exponential increase,'' Walke continued.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had similar advice ahead of Thanksgiving, and still the TSA reported some of the highest rates of passengers since the pandemic started in the few days ahead of the holiday. On the Sunday before Thanksgiving, the TSA screened 1.17 million travelers, a record high since the pandemic started.For those who decide to travel, the CDC now recommends people get tested for COVID-19 both before and after their trips. Their guidance is to test one to three days before travel and again three to five days after travel. They also strongly recommend reducing nonessential activities and quarantining for several days around travel.Health experts, including the White House coronavirus task force is urging those who don’t get tested to act like they could be infectious and quarantine after travel to reduce the potential spread.Walke said the CDC expects to see an increase in the already high level of coronavirus cases in the next few days from Thanksgiving travel.There have been more than 13.7 million positive cases of coronavirus in this country since the pandemic started, more than 180,000 new cases were recorded December 2. Dr. Christina Blasey Ford has been nominated for a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Distinguished Alumna Award for "speaking truth to power" by going public with sexual assault allegations against then-Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh."What Dr. Blasey Ford did on September 27, 2018 was something that was extraordinary in how ordinary it was: she told the truth about a sexual assault she experienced when she was fifteen years old at the hands of Judge Brett Kavanaugh," wrote UNC English professor Dr. Jennifer Ho in the letter nominating Ford, speaking about the California professor's testimony last month in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee.Ford, who graduated from UNC with a bachelor's degree in psychology in 1988, accused Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her at a house party when the two were in high school. Kavanaugh has denied all allegations against him.Both Ford and Kavanaugh testified before the committee, prompting a weeklong FBI investigation and hundreds of activist protesters on Capitol Hillbefore the Senate confirmed Kavanaugh by?a 50-48 vote Saturday afternoon."Dr. Blasey Ford giving her testimony, speaking truth to power, was an inspiration for so many of us," Ho wrote. Does undocumented immigration lead to more violent crimes? A study looking at the increase of illegal immigrants over 24 years says no.There's a stigma linking violent crime with illegal immigrants and part of that has to do with the spotlight on MS-13 gang arrests across the country and specifically in Lake Worth. But, a state-by-state study says an increase in undocumented immigration actually makes communities safer.The study was conducted by sociologists Michael Light of the University of Wisconsin at Madison and Ty Miller of Purdue University.The FBI's Uniform Crime Report statistics show Florida's violent crime rate over time and statistics from the Pew Research Center show the increase in undocumented immigrants.The study looked at those statistics from 1990 to 2014. In those 25 years, Florida's undocumented immigration was at its lowest in 1990 and its violent crime rate for those years was at its highest. Fast forward to 2007, the undocumented immigration population peaked in the state, and the violent crime rate had dropped by 40 percent and continued to decrease. The study echoes what many immigration advocates argue. "We don’t see a large criminal underground in Lake Worth. What we see are families struggling to get by," said Tim Gamwell, Executive Director of the Guatemalan-Maya Center which helps immigrant families. Big dreams hang up on the walls of the Escuelita Maya in Lake Worth, an after-school and VPK program run by the center.Hopefully, he is going to have a better life than other kids in my country," said Esmeralda about her son.Esmeralda came to the United States when she was five to escape crime in El Salvador.  "It's not an option to come here and be illegal, it's something that we have to do," she said. Getting involved in criminal activity could mean losing everything you've worked for. Patricia Vargas works with families at the Guatemalan Maya Center and said many are afraid of being deported. Gamwell said in some cases they don't even report when they are victims of crimes. "We've seen a history of that, where people are targeted because they have cash on them on payday," said Gamwell. Gamwell said the focus for the 600 plus families they serve in Lake Worth is making ends meet and providing for their children."The big issues are:  How do I educate my children? how to do I get access to a computer? (CNS) -- A man who struck and seriously injured a bicyclist in Ramona last fall pleaded guilty Monday to felony charges of reckless driving resulting in serious injury and vandalism.Chase Edward Richard, 35, admitted hitting Michelle Scott from behind on state Route 67 near Dye Road with his Ford Edge last Oct. 2. Scott was struck around 6:15 a.m., and was airlifted to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido with serious injuries.She remained at the hospital for about two months before being transferred to a Poway nursing care facility, where she remains under full-time care, recovering from the brain injury she suffered in the crash, according to the Ramona Sentinel.Richard was arrested less than a week later. The California Highway Patrol said a tip from the public led investigators to Richard's damaged SUV in the garage of his Ramona residence.Richard agreed to a three-year, eight-month term that will include two years in local custody and 20 months of mandatory supervision.Per the terms of his plea agreement, Richard will also perform 200 hours of community service, a component of his sentence that Deputy District Attorney Valerie Ryan said was important to Scott's family.The victim volunteered with multiple local programs, including the local Community Emergency Response Team -- or CERT -- which trains and assists community members in response to emergency situations like natural disasters.Ryan said Scott's husband, Don, hopes that Richard can "do what he can to give back to the community because Mrs. Scott can no longer do that."The prosecutor said Don Scott is "hoping through this time on mandatory supervision that Mr. Richard can change and alter his behavior" and "contribute to the community" once he is released from custody."There's a lot of graciousness and generosity of heart in the Scott family, and they are hoping and looking for Mr. Richard to do better" Ryan said.Sentencing is slated for July 28. 1966
