SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This week, San Diegans will get the chance to learn about our armed services with several exhibits and tours as part of Fleet Week.Fleet Week runs Nov. 4-12 with festivities throughout San Diego, giving families the chance to get close up with America's military forces. Last year, more than 20,000 visitors took part in the festivities, learning about filed combat gear, touring the USS Harpers Ferry, and exploring the event's popular Innovation Zone.New this year, families can enjoy a Veterans Day parade and special veterans art exhibit, with works created by active duty, reservists, and veterans covering an array of mediums."San Diego is definitely a military town," Gordon Rutherford, Fleet Week San Diego president, said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Registrar of Voters is asking those who received mail ballots to check their mail ballot packets, according to County News Center. Registrar of Voters Michael Vu said his office has received more than a dozen reports of missing mail ballots in the election packets for the June 5 Gubernatorial Primary. According to the registrar, as many as 1,500 ballots could be affected. Though that number is small compared to the total number of ballots, Vu said his office wants to make sure every voter gets the ballot they asked for.RELATED: Early voting begins in San Diego ahead of June 5 primary election  Nearly 1.1 million mail ballots were sent to county voters last week. The issue with the packets was traced to the vendor’s mechanical inserter equipment.The problem was corrected, but voters are still being asked to double-check their packets.“If you find there is no ballot inside or you have two cards, give us a call,” said Vu. “We will suspend the packet and re-issue you a new one.”Those who experience the problem with their ballot can call the Registrar of Voters at 858-565-5800. 1141

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- This year's Rose Parade will not happen due to the Coronavirus pandemic, but there will be a televised special, showcasing parade's from year's past, as well as special segments.One of those segments will feature a Rancho Bernardo 2-year-old who is being honored for her organ donation. A year and a half ago, Leia Parker lost her life after a swimming accident, and with help from the company Lifesharing, Leia's parents had her organs donated to families in need."As a grieving parent, you just want to find meaning, and I believe everything happens for a reason," says mother Tihani. I am extremely proud that my daughter has changed the lives of five people, and she has given a second chance and new hope to others."Tihani was hopeful her daughter would one day grow up to be a strong independent women. And that is why she named her Leia, after the Star War character Princess Leia."Princess Leia was my favorite Star Wars character, and she was one of my bigger role models. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Unified School District, one of the state's largest districts, begins the new school year online Monday.Even though California has given both private and public schools in San Diego County the green light to reopen schools on Tuesday, Sept. 1, SD Unified officials say for now they will stick with distance learning.The district's online instruction plan includes:A six-hour school day with customized learning experiences for each K-12 studentAll students will have daily, live interaction with their teachers via video conferencingCustom learning experiences will be based on student needs and will include daily live, online instruction (up to three hours), independent learning (at least two hours), working with other students in small groups or participating in educator office hours (at least one hour)All Elementary students will receive instruction in reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, physical education, and the artsStudents will receive grades to measure their progressSome children who have faced learning challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic may be offered appointments for in-person sessions, which could begin as soon as late September, according to the district."The teacher will of course try various interventions teaching strategies online, but if the teacher comes to the conclusion that this student would benefit from in-person interventions, then the teacher will reach out to the family," said San Diego Education Association President Kisha Borden.Students will be identified by their teachers for participation based on several factors: Students who had below standard marks on their spring 2020 report cards, special education students who did not meet IEP goals, and special education students with intense support needs.The district says this option will not be offered immediately and will take teachers a few weeks to make these assessments. 1940

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- This Saturday, the City of San Diego invites all children to play in the mud.In a celebration of nature and friendship, “International Mud Day” encourages kids to get dirty together. First celebrated between Australia and Nepal in 2009, the holiday has spread to cities across the world.Saturday will mark San Diego’s 2nd Mud Day celebration. All children and their families are invited to Crown Point Park in Mission Bay from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.After a successful celebration in 2018, the City has expanded the event to include obstacle courses, nature crafts, and more.
