A recent string of extremist attacks highlights an alarming trend: a growing number of hate crimes across the country.In fact, it’s up for the fourth year in a row in most major cities, according to Brian Levin, who studies hate crimes. Levin says one possible reason for the most recent spike of attacks is the midterm elections.“We're a very polarized society,” says Levin, who works at the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism. “We're not only divided, but we're entrenched in that division.”Experts say hotly contested political races can cause a jump in hate crimes. It happened around the 2016 presidential election.“November of that year was the worst month of 14 years, going back to the first anniversary of 9/11,” Levin says.Just this week, attorneys for three men accused of planning to bomb a mosque the day after Donald Trump became president say his rhetoric during the campaign inspired the men.Now that he's president, others worry his words could motivate others.At a recent rally, President Trump stated, “You know what? I am; I'm a nationalist, okay.“But you also had people that were very fine people, on both sides.”Professor Carolyn Gallaher at American University believes this rhetoric has consequences.“In white supremacist circles, they took this to mean this person supports us and we have a champion in the White House and we can fight for a white America.”The president and his administration deny he intentionally incites violence. 1475

A Starbucks worker in New Jersey allegedly spat in police officers' drinks, officials said Tuesday.Park Ridge officers arrested Kevin Trejo, 21, on charges of subjecting a law enforcement officer to contact with bodily fluid, knowingly tampering with a cup of coffee while knowing it was ordered by a law enforcement officer and creating a hazardous or physically dangerous condition.In a statement, Park Ridge Police Chief Joseph Madden said Trejo was arrested after an investigation found that he spat in the drinks of officers who patronized the store where he worked.New Jersey State Policemen's Benevolent Association President Patrick Colligan called Trejo's alleged actions "outrageous.""Every time I think we as society hit bottom, there is a new incident," Colligan said. "Officers risk their lives daily, it shouldn't be while getting coffee."A Starbucks spokesperson said Trejo was no longer employed by the company."Obviously this individual's behavior was reprehensible and not at all a reflection of how our partners or employees treat our customers on a daily basis," the spokesperson said.Starbucks is working with the police department in the investigation.WPIX's Aliza Chasan first reported this story. 1228

A Maryland woman says she failed a drug test the day she gave birth to her daughter and was reported to state social workers, all because she ate a poppy seed bagel for breakfast.WBAL-TV in Baltimore reports that Elizabeth Eden ate a poppy seed bagel for breakfast on the morning of April 4. She went into labor later that day and went to St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson to deliver her daughter.However, while she was in labor, a doctor told her she had tested positive for opiates.Poppy seeds come from the same plant which is used to make opium, heroin and other drugs, so it's common for drug tests to pick up on trace amounts of opiates.However, while the federal government measures a positive test at 2,000 nanograms a milliliter, St. Joseph Medical Center measures a positive test at 300 nanograms a milliliter. The hospital says the lower threshold for a positive test means they can treat more children born with drugs in their system — the Baltimore Sun reports that the number of babies born with drugs in their systems increased by 56.6 percent between 2006 and 2015.Eden says the hospital refused to release her daughter to her for five days following the false positive. She also says she was assigned a caseworker, who promptly dropped the case when learning of her breakfast on the morning of April 4.Eden isn't alone. In 2017, an Edgewood, Kentucky woman was assigned a social worker after she tested positive to opioids, saying she ate bagel chips with poppy seeds shortly before giving birth. A Philadelphia police officer who was seen on video pulling down the masks of protesters and spraying chemical irritants in their faces was charged Wednesday with simple assault, reckless endangerment, official oppression, and possession of an instrument of crime, the Philadelphia Inquirer and CNN report.Officer Richard P. Nicoletti, 35, turned himself in on Wednesday.The charges against Nicoletti stem from a June 1 Black Lives Matter protest, when demonstrators blocked I-676 in Philadelphia. Bystander video showed Nicoletti — who was acting as part of the Philadelphia Police SWAT team — approaching three protesters who were kneeling and sitting on the ground.The video shows Nicoletti pull down the demonstrators' masks and spray pepper spray in their faces. He also shoved one of the protesters. The District Attorney's statement claimed Nicoletti sprayed the protesters "without provocation."None of the demonstrators were arrested.According to CNN, the Philadelphia Police Department reviewed the bystander video and opened an investigation on June 24.The officer's lawyer, Fortunato Perri Jr., said Nicoletti was simply following orders."His unit was ordered by commanders to clear the highway with the approved use of tear gas and pepper spray," Perri said, according ot the Inquirer. "The city's leadership was given the opportunity to apologize for approving the use of force, but Nicoletti finds himself fired and charged with crimes." 1460

A Southwest Airlines flight from Chicago to Newark, New Jersey, made an unplanned landing Wednesday after a window cracked, the Federal Aviation Administration and passengers said.Flight 957 was diverted to Cleveland after a report of an issue with a window aboard the aircraft, FAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Cory said. It landed safely at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, she said.Passenger Linda Holley texted her son Ryan with a picture of the damaged window."Window on plane cracked during flight. Landing in Cleveland to be safe. Everything ok but scary," one of her texts read.In another, she said: "Yes Southwest. Just heard loud noise. Very large crack with piece of window missing at bottom. Just landed. Everything ok. Don't know plan yet"The FAA said it will investigate what caused the window to crack. So far, the cause is not known.There was no depressurization in the cabin, and therefore the oxygen masks were not deployed, FAA spokesman Greg Martin said. He said the pilot did not declare an emergency but did ask to divert to a nearby airport.This is the second high-profile flight diversion by a Southwest Airlines plane in less than three weeks.On April 17, Southwest Flight 1380 made an emergency landing after an engine was damaged mid-flight.One person died after being partially sucked out a window.
