SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A “rolling altercation” between two drivers in the Bonita area led to the stabbing death of one man and the detention of another. Chula Vista police Capt. Phil Collum told 10News the incident was reported just after 9 a.m. at the intersection of Sweetwater Road and Willow Street, near the Chula Vista Golf Course.Collum said officers that responded to the incident arrived to find an unidentified man lying on the ground with stab wounds. Life-saving measures were administered before he was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital. The man died from his injuries upon arrival, according to Collum.The other man, 60-year-old Rickey Smith, remained at the scene. Officers said they found a folding-blade knife, believed to be the weapon, on Smith's belt. He surrendered without incident, police said.Collum said witnesses reported the drivers of a white Ford Ranger pickup and silver Nissan Quest minivan yelling at each other before colliding. Smith left his truck and stabbed the victim, who was still in his minivan, police said. No other parties were involved, Collum told 10News. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former La Jolla restaurant owner convicted of raping multiple women is speaking out from jail. Daniel Dorado spoke exclusively with ABC10 News in a series of recorded interviews.Dorado was sentenced on Tuesday to 40 years in prison in a hearing where several victims shared their emotional stories with the courtroom.Dorado maintains his innocence and accuses law enforcement officials of conspiring against him, although he lacks evidence to back his claims. Per ABC10 News' continued efforts to practice balanced reporting and given the impact his arrest and prosecution had on the community, ABC10 News has chosen to share his story."This is the first time and only time I've spoken to anybody to this degree," 62-year-old Dorado told ABC10 News. The former owner of Voce del Mare restaurant has been incarcerated at George Bailey Detention Facility since being convicted last December on 20 counts related to rape and sexual assault of four unconscious and intoxicated victims."You're vilified 24-7," he told ABC10 News and added, "Nobody made these women do anything. It was all very consented."ABC10 News broke the story two years ago when Dorado was charged with drugging and raping women, sometimes at his restaurant. ABC10 News previously spoke to one woman who said that it happened to her."I went in there for a job interview. I would have never imagined going through a sexual assault and not knowing how it happened," she told ABC10 News during the 2018 interview. She said that she answered an ad on Craigslist for a hostess position, and when she went in for an interview, she said Dorado offered her wine, which she accepted. What happened next is unclear."What I do recall is waking up around four in the morning and I did not have any clothes on. He had nothing on. [There were] bruises around my chest. I was in great pain," she explained.At trial, some of his former employees talked about working for him. "He was very erratic. His behavior...he would say one thing and be yelling at you [and] then nice the next second," one person testified."I will not be satisfied until I'm exonerated," Dorado stated in one of his recent interviews from jail. He denies any wrongdoing and says that every sexual encounter was consensual.Dorado said he believes that the DA's Office unfairly bolstered a conviction against him although his argument is based on speculation. ABC10 has asked, "What evidence do you have to support that?" Dorado replied in part, "I don't have any evidence. That belongs to the detectives."Dorado pointed to one encounter with a woman who he said came to his restaurant after they'd met on a dating app. "In that window of time between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m., she had two martinis, each with an ounce and a half of vodka and three ounces of cranberry juice. I gave her the opportunity to drive home because her van was right in front and I [asked], 'Or, would you like to continue our day and join me for lunch?' She joined me for lunch and we never drank again," he explained.That lunch date and the eventual sexual encounter was at the Bahia Resort Hotel where he claims that resort surveillance video would have revealed that she was conscious and coherent. Still, he said the video was not shown in court. He accused detectives and DA's Office of purposefully withholding it.Dorado also said that he believes he was recorded in a pretext call staged by detectives in which the victim called to solicit incriminating statements. Dorado believes that she was disgruntled after their date."You have to keep something in mind. I did not call this woman back for several weeks after we met, okay, and so my attorney told me flat out [that] this is a case of buyer's remorse," he told ABC10 News.ABC10 News asked, "Why would multiple women who don't know each other do this to you?" He replied in part, "Several reasons. Attention. Financial. Popular." He insisted, though, that he's not intending to blame or shame victims.Dorado told ABC10 News that another victim was his friend and that authorities pressured her to testify against him. "The District Attorney and the judge allowed me to still interact with her [and] allowed me to [live] with her. She let me live in her townhouse during my bail," he stated and questioned, "What judge allows a rapist to live with their victim?"At this week's sentencing hearing, she was the only victim who spoke out in his defense. She accused detectives of manipulating her to testify against her will and appear confused about a possible assault.In court, she stated, "Your Honor, Mr. Dorado never raped me. I never went to the police. I never filed a police report. In fact, I declined a restraining order against Mr. Dorado and I told detectives that I did not want to press charges."On the phone Tuesday night, she declined to offer any more public comment.ABC10 News reached out to the attorney who represented the victim who said that she answered the ad on Craigslist to get her position on his accusations. The victim has not called to provide comment.The DA's Office sent the following statement to ABC10 News:"The District Attorney's Office presented evidence in open court, a jury found we proved our case beyond a reasonable doubt and convicted the defendant of these violent crimes. The victims in this case deserve justice and will have the opportunity to be heard at sentencing."A follow-up statement from the DA's Office after the sentencing hearing read,"[Tuesday's] comments in open court by the judge, the victims, and our prosecutor along with the evidence presented at trial, all support the just result and appropriate sentence in this case."The San Diego Police Department sent ABC10 News the following statement:"The San Diego Police Department is committed to maintaining public safety by providing the highest quality police services. The department's Sex Crimes Unit thoroughly investigated all incidents brought to our attention, and we appreciate the San Diego County District Attorney's efforts to help seek justice for all who have been victimized by Mr. Dorado.""I'm hurt. I'm angry. My life has been ruined," Dorado told ABC10 News and added, "I'm not looking for sympathy. I'm looking for the truth."One of the victims filed a civil suit against Dorado after he was arrested. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Violent crime in San Diego County rose in the first half of the year for the fifth consecutive year, according to a report released Tuesday by the San Diego Association of Governments. The report by SANDAG's Criminal Justice Research Division found that the mid-year number of violent crimes in the county was 5,545, up from 5,510 last year; 5,421 in 2017; 5,361 in 2016; and 5,330 in 2015. The five-year increase amounts to a 4% bump in violent crime. Reports of property crime went the opposite direction, falling from 30,447 in 2015 to 27,236 in 2019, an 11% decrease. The mid-year numbers of violent and property crimes in 2019 are vastly different from 2009, when the city received 6,256 violent crime reports and 35,204 property crime reports. Violent crime reports dropped 11.4% in that span, mainly because robbery reports fell from 1,931 to 1,411, according to the SANDAG report. Despite the overall drop in robbery reports, this year's number increased 5% compared to the same six-month period last year. Arson reports saw the largest drop from last year to this year -- falling 28% from 190 to 136 -- while homicides dropped from 40 to 38. Reported property crimes fell 22.6% from 2009 to 2019 and residential burglaries saw the biggest decrease in that time, dropping 53.9% from 4,460 to 2,054. Larceny over 0 was the only category to increase from 2009 to 2019, rising from 7,578 to 8,527. Reports of rape fell to 539 after reaching 604 at the midway point of 2018. However, numbers since 2015 may be somewhat deceiving, as California law enforcement broadened the definition of rape in 2015 to include ``male victims, sodomy, penetration with any body part or object, and no longer requires force,'' according to SANDAG Division Director of Criminal Justice Dr. Cynthia Burke. As a result, some crimes that would have been classified as aggravated assaults are now considered rapes and some crimes that would not have been considered violent crimes are now captured in these statistics, Burke said. Violent crimes include homicide, rape, robbery and aggravated assault. Property crimes include burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft. According to the report, San Diego law enforcement has received an average of 31 reports of violent crime and 150 reports of property crime per day during 2019's first half. 2353

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two men conspired with five other people in a series of home-invasion robberies in northern San Diego in which sleeping residents were roused at gunpoint and tied up, and one woman was sexually assaulted, a prosecutor said Wednesday.Deputy District Attorney Jalyn Wang told a jury that Thomas James Smith and Aaron Rico III were part of robbery crew dubbed the "Open Door Bandits," so named because in most of the 10 break-ins, the robbers gained access to homes through an unlocked door.Wang alleged that Smith, 26, and Rico, 22, were two of the major players in the robbery crew.A third major player, Stephen Ramon Gomez, pleaded guilty in the case.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodFour other defendants, Aaron Rico V, Victor Harvey, Robin Shawver and Jordan Wilson, also pleaded guilty.Wang alleged the home-invasion series began the night of Jan. 23, 2016, when Smith, Gomez and Shawver used garage door openers they found in cars to get into two residences in Mira Mesa, where they stole items including an X- box gaming system.On Jan. 26, 2016, at about 1:20 a.m., a man returned to his residence in Carmel Mountain Ranch after taking a friend home and saw that his house was being ransacked, the prosecutor said. The man chased one of the robbers, but could not catch him, Wang said.The DNA of Smith and Gomez was found on items left at the scene, according to the prosecutor.Three nights later, on Jan. 29, 2016, the bandits gained access to a home in Scripps Ranch through an unlocked door and robbed a family at gunpoint, yelling, "Where's the money? Where's the jewelry? Where's the gold?" Wang said in her opening statement.Smith, Gomez, Rico III and Harvey were charged in that break-in, Wang said.On Jan. 31, 2016, a woman was awakened at gunpoint in her Sorrento Valley home, tied up and sexually assaulted by one or two of the defendants, according to the prosecutor. The perpetrators allegedly took jewelry off the woman's body and threatened to shoot her.Wang said Gomez pawned the woman's wedding ring and his DNA was found on a pillow case on her bed.On Feb. 5, 2016, Smith and Rico III broke into a home in Rancho Bernardo through an unlocked door and held a couple at gunpoint while ransacking the residence, Wang told the jury.The night of Feb. 11, 2016, four homes in  Carmel Mountain Ranch and Sabre Springs were broken in to, including three in the same neighborhood, the prosecutor said.In one robbery, a barking dog alerted a sleeping couple to intruders, and the wife's 911 call forced the suspects to flee, Wang said.In another break-in, the robbers tied up a family -- including a 2- year-old who had his wrists taped together -- and spent an hour ransacking the home before leaving, the prosecutor said.Smith's attorney, Deputy Public Defender Damian Lowe, said that once police determined the crimes were connected, they started to follow a number of suspects, not including his client.Lowe said "significant" mistakes were made in the investigation of the robbery series.He told the jury the case would come down to "what evidence is going to prove beyond a reasonable doubt as to who did what?"Smith and Rico III face life in prison if convicted of conspiracy to commit burglary, robbery, burglary and sexual assault. 3302
