One day after Papa John's CEO John Schnatter claimed that decreased TV viewership in response to NFL player protests over racial inequality was causing a decline in business, Pizza Hut said on Thursday that NFL boycotts have not caused any decline in business. Yum Brands, parent company of Pizza Hut, held an investors' conference call on Thursday and declared same-store sales were up 3 percent. That is compared to just a 1 percent increase for Papa John's. While Schnatter cited the response to NFL player protests as the reason for lower-than-expected growth at Papa John's, Yum Brands offered no such criticism. "We're not seeing any impact from any of that on our business," Yum Brands CEO Greg Creed said. While Creed admitted that live sports is important facet of business, he said other factors such as food quality are important. "The foundations are not always sexy, but I think delivering hot, reliable pizza is important, and I do believe the team is making progress on all the areas in the foundation that will enable us to build, longer term, a strong Pizza Hut position," Creed added.Schnatter, on the other hand, called the player protests during the national anthem a "debacle." “The NFL has hurt us by not resolving the current debacle to the players’ and owners’ satisfaction… NFL leadership has hurt Papa John’s shareholders,” he said on Wednesday.Just as Colin Kaepernick began leading protests among some NFL players last August, Papa John's renewed its contract to be the official pizzeria of the NFL. The brand has also aligned itself with popular NFL personalities, such as former Indianapolis Colts great Peyton Manning. But some on social media are accusing Schnatter, who was a donor to President Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, of playing politics. According to campaign filings, Schnatter donated ,000 to Trump's campaign last year. He also donated ,400 to the Republican National Committee last August. Earlier in the NFL season, Trump delivered a sharp rebuke of players who kneeled or sat during the national anthem. Also, Vice President Mike Pence walked out of a Colts game before kickoff, per the orders of the President, due to members of the 49ers taking a knee during the national anthem. But there is no question NFL viewership is down in 2017 compared to 2016. According to Fox Sports, viewership has declined from an average of 15.6 million viewers per game to 14.8 million at the same point last year."This year, the ratings have gone backwards because of the controversy. And so the controversy is polarizing the customer, polarizing the country, and that’s the big difference here," Schnatter said. 2780

OAKLAND, Ca. — You might have forgotten what it felt like to be in a theater that’s packed with people, watching a movie on a big screen.Carlos Courtade remembers the connection.“You came for the feeling, like you were part of something,” he said.He remembers the energy that this pandemic has turned into emptiness inside his theater, The New Parkway, in Oakland, California.Courtade is The New Parkway’s director of community outreach.“We already, as an independent movie theater, pride ourselves on having some of the lowest ticket prices around town and also, at the same time, paying our employees the most out of a living wage, more than any other movie theater around, so already our margins are already really, really narrow,” Courtade said.Courtade is familiar with the script that’s been written for theaters in 2020.Hundreds of theaters have closed, and many will never show films again. But The New Parkway is unique, and that’s easy to see when you look at its theaters. Instead of seats, there are couches, giving it more of a basement or living room type feel than a theater. What’s also unique is what is keeping them in business.“Unlike a lot of movie theaters around, we had the benefit of having a full-sized kitchen,” Courtade said. The kitchen is a plot twist that’s keeping the lights on at a movie theater that hasn’t shown a movie in nine months. The New Parkway’s staff prepare and package food it typically would serve in its theater but now sell it to customers who order online.“For the most part, it’s been enabling us to keep our heads above water,” Courtade said. The food helps pay the rent at a time when the movie-less theater is missing 0,000 a month in revenue. But when you look around Oakland, like many cities, you can see why just being open is a win.“I don’t think anyone knows what the impact is going to be long-term,” said Marcus Osborne, who started working as a manager at The New Parkway during the pandemic. As coronavirus, social distancing, and isolation threaten movie theaters today, the threat of tomorrow for this industry beyond this pandemic, if you ask Osborne, is whether customers will ever fully come back.“How are we going to continue to make movie theaters and other forms of entertainment important to people if they’ve found a way to live without it?” he asked.“I’ve heard a lot of people say they wouldn’t come back to the theater even post-pandemic,” Courtade added. The New Parkway says it won’t fully reopen until there is a vaccine readily available. It's hard to predict the ending to this pandemic, but like a movie, there is a moral in the story of businesses like this one: finding a way through, no matter what.“Sometimes you just have to think outside the box,” Courtade said. “Something that might not be obvious or clear right away shouldn’t prevent you from looking at things in a different point of view.” 2886

On Monday, social media website Reddit banned r/The_Donald, a subreddit devoted to discussing President Donald Trump, as a part of a purge of more than 2,000 groups on the site that were in violation of the social media site's rules, according to The New York Times and The Verge. The move marks a stark change in Reddit policy. Previously, Reddit has allowed groups and individuals more leeway when censoring content on the site.Launched in 2015 along with Trump's presidential campaign, r/The_Donald grew to nearly 800,000 members before it was removed from Reddit. While the group did not have any affiliation with Trump or the Trump campaign, the then-Republican nominee participated in an "Ask Me Anything" discussion in the group during the 2016 presidential campaign. The group has become known for a breeding ground for conspiracy theories. According to reports, the group helped propel the "Pizzagate" theory that led to the arrest of an armed man at a D.C.-area pizza restaurant shortly after the 2016 election. It also routinely hosted Islamophobic discussions and promoted other content many considered to be racist.According to a disclaimer, Reddit says r/The_Donald was banned violating Rules 1 (harassment, threats of violence), 2 (spamming, vote manipulation) and 8 (don't break the site or do anything that interferes with the normal use of Reddit).Reddit had previously taken steps to curtail r/The_Donald. In June 2019, the network "quarantined" the site, meaning that the subreddit would not show up in search results and could not appear on the site's front page. In addition, anyone attempting to visit the forum would be met with a warning screen. The move comes about three weeks after Reddit published a blog post outlining changes to the social network's policies. Earlier this month, several large groups on the site went dark in support of the Black Lives Matter movement and in response to Reddit's lack of policing of hateful content on its site.As part of Monday's purge, r/ChapoTrapHouse — a subreddit based on the left-wing podcast of the same name — was also banned from the site.According to The Verge, several other larged subreddits were banned on Monday.r/DarkHumorAndMemesr/ConsumeProductr/DarkJokeCentralr/GenderCriticalr/imgoingtohellforthis2r/soyboys 2297

OCEANSIDE, Caif. (KGTV) -- A 63 year old man is grateful to be alive Saturday night after his sailboat capsizes and he was left swimming for his survival.Andrea Aria was on a trip back from Catalina, “I’m alive for the grace of God. Aria sat down with 10 News and talked about the horrific details, “I didn’t even see the wave until I made the turn and it was too late it was up on me”. The wave tipped the boat, he tried holding on, “I let go and went back in the water and I went under the boat and the boat went over me once then twice and the propellers are going”.During that moment he didn’t realize the injuries he was getting, “I didn’t feel, the adrenaline the cold water the salt all I know I couldn’t move my fingers I knew my hands were messed up “. Two casts on his hands because doctors say, he cut tendons leaving his fingers unable to move. The propeller on his boat also gashed his foot leaving him with 28 stitches. He swam about a half mile to shore, “every two strokes I was getting hit with a wave and I’m submerging and I’m having trouble handling it” Aria tells us.He says just as he was about to give up, his foot hit the sand and he crawled his way to the beach, “I finally made it and there were two police men and they said someone called us must have been an angel”.Saturday night, Aria is thankful to be alive, but he’s now realizing just how much he lost, along with his boat, “the things that I need to function everyday, they’re gone, they’re all gone” he continued, “I’m really without anything at this moment”.He’s now left to depend solely on his faith, “it wasn’t my time, I guess when its your time its your time. It definitely makes you humble definitely makes you humble”. Click here for a GoFundMe. 1746
