Supporters are calling it a “rainbow wave.”Minorities of all ages, ethnicities and faiths will now have a voice in Congress. A sweeping 30 seats in the House were snagged, including one by first time Democratic candidate and former Navy commander Elaine Lorea, who flipped her district in Virginia blue.Voters in Michigan and Minnesota elected the first Muslim women into Congress. In Kansas and New Mexico, the nation’s very first Native American women were elected to join the ranks.But it's not just Democratic women shaking up trends. Republican women are making history too.Marsha Blackburn is now the first female Senator in Tennessee. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has released some of the video that was captured on Oct. 1 when police officers broke into the suite being used by mass shooter Stephen Paddock.Sheriff Joe Lombardo told the public on Tuesday that the department would release the video. Lombardo emphasized that the release of the video and other records would most likely retraumatize survivors and family members and that it would also put stress, both emotional and financial, on the department. 507
The Miami Marlins announced Friday that they had hired Kim Ng as their new general manager, making Ng the first female GM in MLB history.According to ESPN, Ng is now the highest-ranking woman employed by any of the 30 MLB teams and is likely the first woman to hold the title of general manager for any major pro sports team — though other women, like former Oakland Raiders CEO Amy Trask and Los Angeles Lakers President Jeanie Buss have held executive roles with pro sports teams.Ng is also the second person of Asian descent to lead the baseball operations of an MLB team, following in the footsteps of Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi."This challenge is one I don't take lightly. When I got into this business, it seemed unlikely a woman would lead a Major League team, but I am dogged in the pursuit of my goals," Ng said in a statement. The housing market has been strong in 2020, but as we head into 2021, it seems the market will continue to buck all home buying and selling trends.“It used to be true the home buying season was spring or summer when kids are out of school,” says Daryl Fairweather, chief economist for Redfin. “The pandemic has changed all that.”It's her job to study the market, follow migration patterns, and make sure both agents and customers are informed.“I predict that the early winter -- January, February -- is going to be an unusually busy home buying and selling season,” Fairweather says.Fairweather said people can move anytime and they're eager to get it over with when they've made the decision to relocate.“People want to move to places that really fit their preferences whether it's a beach town or a lake town or to be closer to their family, people are moving to places that they really want to live in, not just places that are close to the office,” Fairweather said.Jordan Thomas bought a home while the market has been hot.“It's a very quick process, buying was extremely competitive,” Thomas said.Thomas said she was among the many who decided the time to buy is now.“Because the interest rates were so great, I was able to get a really great deal on a larger home for myself,” Thomas said.She was the first to put in an offer on her Houston-area home. Six more offers followed that same day.“Because I was the first to put in the offer and I was aggressive with what I put forth, the first time around was the reason why I ended up getting the home,” Thomas said.And true to Fairweather's prediction about what people want in a home, Thomas was ready to renovate.
