OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) –A man visiting the beach with his family drowned in Oceanside over Labor Day weekend, police say. Oceanside Police say the 31-year-old man from Victorville was on a trip with his family when he went swimming and never returned to shore. According to police, he was later found by some people walking on the beach. After he was located, lifeguards tried to revive him using CPR, but the man died, authorities say. The drowning happened the day after a 73-year-old woman died in Mission Bay. Lifeguards say she appeared not to be swimming in a straight line when they swam out and brought her to shore. Lifeguards performed CPR on the 73-year-old, but she later died. (KGTV) — Oceanside's shoreline was closed Tuesday after the sighting of a 9-foot long hammerhead shark. Oceanside Lifeguards temporarily closed the city's beaches from Wisconsin Ave. to Harbor Beach around 11:30 a.m. Police officers were dispatched on a boat offshore to keep an eye out for the shark, according to the city. The shark was last seen swimming about 100 yards offshore, south of the Oceanside Pier. The shoreline was reopened at 2:30 p.m. after a final search of the area came up empty.RELATED: 564

NYE COUNTY, Nevada — Famed Love Ranch brother owner and GOP Assembly candidate Dennis Hof has died.The Nye County Sheriff's Office confirmed Hof's death Tuesday morning at the Love Ranch in Crystal, outside of Pahrump. Detectives and deputies are currently on scene and conducting an investigation into his death. Hof was 72 years old. On a typical day, police officers make more than 50,000 traffic stops.According to the Stanford Open Policing Project, which looked at nearly 100 million traffic stops, there are significant racial disparities in policing.Black drivers are stopped more frequently than white drivers, and Black and Hispanic drivers are more likely to be searched.“The public has to have confidence and trust in highway safety enforcement and law enforcement and that trust has been reduced because of recent events,” said Jonathan Adkins, Executive Director at the Governors Highway Safety Association.The association came out with its first ever recommendations on how to reduce racism in traffic enforcement. They include making sure the demographics of law enforcement officers match the communities they serve, collecting data on race in traffic enforcement, incorporating that data in grants and funding, and getting perspectives from minorities and low-income communities.The association doesn't believe widespread agency defunding or pulling officers from stops is the answer.“If someone is speeding, driving aggressively, driving drunk, you don’t want a social worker pulling them over, that needs to be a law enforcement officer with a weapon to protect him or herself,” said Adkins.The association points to more training on racism, bias and de-escalation.Another important component to building public trust is positive stops.“If someone is doing the right thing and you have an encounter with them, give them a dollar certificate for ice cream, give them an award, thanks for having your child buckled up correctly in the backseat,” said Adkins.Adkins says at the same time, you don’t want to pull back on traffic enforcement. ODESSA, Texas – An 8-year-old girl in Texas died after authorities say she was forced to jump on a hot trampoline as punishment for an extended period of time.Additionally, the Odessa Police Department says the child wasn’t allowed to eat breakfast or drink any water, because she wasn’t jumping.Odessa police say officers responded to the girl’s home on Aug. 29 in reference to a medical call. When police arrived, they located the child, who was later pronounced dead at the scene.A search warrant was later obtained, and the temperature of the trampoline read to be about 110 degrees and the ground was around 150 degrees.On Oct. 8, police say they received the final autopsy report for the little girl, which listed her manner of death as homicide and the cause of death as dehydration.Based on the facts and circumstances presented during the investigation, capital murder warrants were obtained for both Daniel Schwarz and Ashley Schwarz.A police spokesperson told the Odessa American that the Schwarzes were the non-biological parents of the 8-year-old.Jail records show the couple were booked into the Ector County Law Enforcement Center on Monday.
