BEIJING, July 6 (Xinhua) -- China's weather forecast authorities said Tuesday that rains are expected to fall on parts of east China starting Thursday, offering some respite to a wide-ranging heat wave that had wreaked havoc across the country over the past few days.From Beijing in the north to Guangzhou in the south, a number of the elderly and children were hospitalized for heat-related illnesses. Some zoo animals died or struggled to survive by laying on ice.Also, a passenger bus caught fire in downtown Beijing and swarms of locusts blanketed a couple of dry prairies and grasslands in the north.The National Meteorological Center (NMC) raised the heat alert to orange on Tuesday, one step before the highest level, and said at least 16 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities were enduring the extreme heat.In Beijing, the temperature shot up to 40.6 degrees Celsius, breaking the city's early July heat record in more than 50 years. Further, the extreme high temperatures would continue in north, east and west China for the next 24 hours before rains begin to fall, the authorities said."Every day we have about 300 patients, 100 more than the average," Qin Jian, head of the emergency unit of Xuanwu Hospital in Beijing, said. "The wards and emergency rooms have been full right from the morning."
BEIJING, June 21 (Xinhua) -- China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the country's top economic planner, refuted on Monday recent reports online saying China is mulling adjustments of electricity prices, claiming such reports "untrue" .The NDRC said in a statement on its website that recently there were reports online saying the NDRC was studying plans to adjust electricity prices, citing Li Jing, deputy head of the Department of Resource Conservation and Environmental Protection at NDRC. Reports said she has not given the timetable for the plan.The statement further said she never made such remarks to media and the reports were groundless.The NDRC began a rise in the price of electricity for non-residential use by 2.8 fen (0.4 cents) per kwh on average nationwide on November 20 last year, with residential electricity prices unchanged.

BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Urban fixed assets investment in China for the first five months rose 25.9 percent year on year to 6.74 trillion yuan (986.76 billion U.S. dollars), the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) announced Friday.The growth rate was 0.2 percentage points down from that for the first four months, according to figures released by the NBS.In the first five months, central government project investment was 540 billion yuan, up 14.1 percent year on year; investment by local governments soared 27 percent to 6.2 trillion yuan.Investment in railways construction and transportation climbed 20.4 percent to 161.1 billion yuan during the same period.The government is reportedly planning to spend 700 billion yuan on high-speed railway construction this year.Total investment in the primary sector (including farming, fishing and forestry) expanded 16.1 percent from a year earlier.The industrial sector saw investment up 22.4 percent and investment in the tertiary sector, which covers commerce, finance and services, was up 28.8 percent.Property market investment grew 38.2 percent to 1.39 trillion yuan in the first five months, 2 percentage points higher than the figure for the first four months, according to NBS data.
