ALPINE, Calif. (KGTV) - For some students in Alpine, the first week of school has meant distance learning pods inside a school, hosted by their school district.Like for so many kids, the switch to distance learning in March was tough for 8-year-old Ashlyn, according to her mother Stephanie Green."She thrives more when she's with her peers. One-on-one with me and her just didn't really work as well," said Green.So when distance learning was mandated to begin the school year, there was disappointment, and then came a different reaction."I thought thought it was great. It was really innovative," said Green.Photos sent to ABC 10News reveal what the first week of school looked like for nearly 100 students in the Alpine Union School District. Inside one school gym, there was a distance learning pod with Ashlyn and seven other kids, in the 1st, 3rd and 4th grades. Set up by the district, the pods are being held on school grounds. Students are separated by plexiglass dividers. A substitute teacher is on hand to guide them through the process. Parents in the pods take shifts supervising the kids, making sure they get breaks outside.About half of the learning pods are within their before-and-after-school care programs, expanded into a 10-and-a-half hour days."The learning pods are a good way to have a bit normalcy to begin the school year," said Green.Despite initial concerns, the county officials tells ABC 10News the district-hosted learning pods do fall within the latest state guidelines.District superintendent rich Newman says they launched the program to address challenges their families were facing with distance learning, from internet access and social isolation to distractions and parents' work schedules."The number one feedback is 'Thank you. Thank you for thinking of us, for giving kids a safe place to learn. And thank you for letting us go back to work,'" said Newman.With the county giving schools to open for in-person instruction next week, Newman says they are working on a hybrid option for their K-to-8 classes, before transitioning to an in-person learning model option. 2117

A wildfire burning in Arizona, just northeast of the Valley, is now the most massive fire actively burning in the country, according to officials.The wildfire has already demolished more than 114,000 acres, and it is just five percent contained, as of Thursday morning.The good news is no homes nor businesses have been destroyed, but some worry it is just a matter of time, as evacuations have been implemented in multiple towns.Fire crews say the wildfire has spread so rapidly and is difficult to contain because of the heat, low humidity, terrain, and high winds.The threat snuck up on Tonto Basin homeowners like Robyn Hill."I really wasn’t prepared for it. I thought the fire was too far away, and you are just kind of in disbelief," said Hill, who got the evacuation order Monday.Hill said she rushed home from her hair salon business in Payson once the alert came across her phone.She packed up the RV with her husband and two dogs, and they quickly left town."So when you got two hours to get your stuff and go. It would help if you were a little more prepared," she said. "I packed the bread and the peanut butter, but forgot the jelly."While the jelly makes for a good joke, leaving home was no laughing matter."You kind of shed a few tears as you leave the house because it’s my home, it’s my little paradise," said Hill, who tells KNXV she had just finished adding a pool and re-doing her garden and yard during the pandemic slowdown.While Hill and others are evacuating their homes, the Red Cross has been setting up shelters."[Monday] we had over a dozen people check-in," said Jim Gilloon, with the Arizona Red Cross. "We don’t just let them walk in. We do a screen test, we take their temperature, and we ask him questions, and then they are clear to come in."At the shelter, the people forced from their homes can get a meal, information, and then the Red Cross helps find them a place to stay for the night."It’s a wildfire season. So we are prepared," said Gilloon. "The fire is spreading, and there is no containment. So we are looking at several days, a week maybe."Many Arizonans from Punkin Center, Sunflower, and Apache Lake are now sleeping in motels.Casie Malinski though, stayed behind in her Tonto Basin home Tuesday to care for her many animals."This morning I took my older children into Payson and dropped them off with their things," said Malinski. "I have full faith in our hotshots and fire crews who are out here."As 440 firefighters desperately try to squelch the inferno, hundreds more are praying for them."I think everybody is just terrified and hoping they will get it out in time before the residences are lost," said Hill. "Let’s stop it on the highway, please. Actress Kate Walsh, best known for her role in the TV series "Grey's Anatomy," went public on Monday with a brain tumor diagnosis in 2015."I was shocked," Walsh said of the moment doctors revealed her MRI results. "It was not what I expected."Walsh was diagnosed with a meningioma: a tumor arising from the lining that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. Within three days, she underwent surgery to have it removed at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. After removing the tumor, doctors confirmed that it was benign.In January 2015, Walsh initially wrote off symptoms as exhaustion, having just executive produced and starred in the NBC series "Bad Judge.""I could drink five cups of coffee and not wake up," she said.She found it hard to concentrate. Her balance was off, and she developed shooting headaches. Her Pilates instructor also noticed that she would dip on her right side.Exercise is "typically when people will see subtle motor changes, because they're really comparing both sides of their body," CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta said.Her cognitive issues became severe enough that her then-boyfriend urged her to see a neurologist."I would reach for words or thoughts, and I just couldn't finish them," Walsh said.By the time she made it to the doctor in June 2015, he even noticed that the right side of her face was drooping slightly. It was then that doctors found the benign tumor, which was just over 5 centimeters long, pushing on her left frontal lobe.Doctors put Walsh on a precautionary antiseizure medication before she went under the knife. With a tumor that size pressing on her brain, they told her she was lucky to have had no seizures.Despite having played Dr. Addison Montgomery on "Grey's Anatomy" and the spinoff "Private Practice," she was blindsided by the diagnosis and her sudden role as the patient. For all the medical jargon she delivered as a TV doctor, she hadn't heard of meningiomas."How meta," Walsh said of her transition from onscreen doctor to real-life patient.Meningiomas, which are more likely to occur in women, are usually benign and slow-growing. Doctors told Walsh that the tumor may have been there for a while -- but that could mean two years or 10 years, she was told.Most meningiomas arise close to the skull, but in some cases, a tumor can form as far down as the spinal cord.These tumors differ greatly from aggressive brain cancers like glioblastoma, which may originate deeper in the brain and can "double in size every couple of weeks," Gupta said. Sen. John McCain was diagnosed with glioblastoma in July.Meningiomas are the most common tumors that originate in the central nervous system, numbering about 27,000 cases per year, based on 2009-13 data from the Central Brain Tumor Registry in the United States.Some are removed surgically without further treatment, as Walsh's was. However, in some cases in which the tumor is very small and causes no symptoms, doctors may simply watch and wait, Gupta said. In less common cases in which malignant cells are found in the tumor or when the tumor is next to delicate structures like the brain stem, doctors may also opt for radiation, Gupta added.Other celebrities have gone public with their own meningioma diagnoses -- including Sheryl Crow, Elizabeth Taylor, Mary Tyler Moore and recently Maria Menounos.Immediately after her surgery, Walsh said, she noticed a difference."The fog had lifted," she said.Walsh said that her decision to go public was intended to help raise awareness, especially of a type of tumor that affects mostly women. She joined "Grey's" co-star Patrick Dempsey and other TV doctors in a campaign launched by Cigna that encourages people to get annual checkups."I was so relieved to know that it was something" that could be fixed, Walsh said of the tumor.
