CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - A motorcyclist from San Marcos died Sunday after crashing into a truck in Carlsbad.According to Carlsbad police, the 19-year-old motorcyclist was riding along the 4600 block of Carlsbad Boulevard when he collided with a Toyota Tundra around 4:35 p.m.Emergency responders arrived and transported the motorcyclist to the hospital but he was pronounced dead on the way.The driver of the Toyota, a 38-year-old man from Grand Terrace, stopped on the scene.Investigators have not said what caused the collision. Californians have voted to carve out specific gig workers from a state employment law about who is considered an employee and eligible for benefits.That means people who drive for Uber and Lyft will remain classified as independent contractors and will not be eligible for employee benefits.A California Supreme Court decision in 2018 created a strict test to decide whether a self-employed worker, like gig workers, should be considered employees.In response to the ruling, lawmakers amended Assembly Bill 5 in 2019 to add additional professions where services could be provided by independent contractors, and would not necessarily be employees. However, no changes were made for app-based companies like Lyft, Uber and DoorDash.The state law made app-based drivers employees, and would pay them for their time both while they are driving and they are waiting for a new ride, and offer employee benefits like paid sick leave and workers compensation for one-the-job injuries, the Los Angeles Times explains.Since the proposition has passed, drivers will remain categorized as independent contractors, although the proposition includes wording to require companies to provide an hourly wage for time spent driving equal to 120% of minimum wage. The language also gives drivers a stipend for purchasing health insurance coverage when their driving time averages at least 15 hours a week. (KGTV) - A woman was stabbed in the parking lot of the Carlsbad Costco Friday evening, police said. Officers arrived at the store at 951 Palomar Airport Road east of Interstate 5 just before 3 p.m. They found the victim in serious condition with several stab wounds.The suspect, 62-year-old Charles Higgins, left the scene before police arrived. He was arrested later in Temecula with the help of Murrieta Police, the U.S. Border Patrol, and the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.Police say the victim and suspect knew each other and this was not a random act. CARLSBAD (KGTV) -- A slope in Carlsbad is moving, affecting a senior community on top of it. The question of who is responsible for paying to fix it has the City of Carlsbad battling with those who live in Camino Hills.“It’s been a tremendously stressful experience for everyone,” said Mike Perry, who has lived in Camino Hills since 2001. Joe Matthews has called the Camino Hills community his home for about 19 years. “We have lunch out here, sometimes dinner,” Matthews said, as he showed Team 10 the front patio area where he relaxes with his wife. “The grandkids come visit.”“It’s a really wonderful community,” Mathews added. What he did not know was something was going on beneath the surface. “It came as a real surprise,” Matthews said. According to court documents filed by the Camino Hills Homeowners Association in 2018, the City of Carlsbad noticed damage to the pavement and sidewalk right by Camino Hills Drive back in 2007. In January 2009, a geotechnical firm placed devices in the slope to track the movement.
