ALPINE, Calif. (KGTV) - One year after the West Fire scorched Alpine, residents are rebuilding.In total, the blaze burned 505 acres and destroyed 34 homes and 22 other buildings, including a commercial structure.Driving through Alpine Saturday, you could see the different levels of recovery. Some homes were a blank concrete foundation with a chimney, others were wooden frames, or brand new structures with scaffolding around the unfinished, black exterior.Lisa Campbell is on the site of her in-laws' property, Campbell Creek Ranch, every week overseeing the rebuild. "You realize how complicated recovery from something like this is," she said referring to the complications with insurance policies and permitting.On the ranch progress is visible. She walked 10News through the property, pointing out a brand new white fence lining the driveway, a freshly laid concrete bridge with black metal rails, much sturdier than the large wooden log bridge before it. Her smile grew as she reached the patio where numerous fond family memories were created. The pool looked like it was ready to be filled with water and enjoyed, lined with new plaster and luminescent tiles. Clay colored tiles created a patio for lounging poolside."The pool that they used to play in, that's coming back so that's nice to see," she said nostalgically.The hope in pipe, planks and plaster fueling the family forward."The fire and the recovery has impacted some of his decision to study Forestry," she said. "I think it's one of the best things to come out of this, is just him thinking about what he wants to do with his life." They returned Saturday afternoon from a college scouting trip. Her son Colin wants to help others through the same tragedy he faced, and is still coping with. He explained just this week he had to rethink where the family was going to watch the Women's World Cup, "soon enough I think about this [house] and I got a little emotional at the time but I've kinda coped but it still comes back every once in a while."The whole family saying they're adjusting to a new normal, thankful for the continued support from the community and encouraging San Diegans to remember their neighbors in Alpine."It's really important not to forget they're in the process of recovery," she said.Lisa said more than 0,000 were raised to help families recover in Alpine. After the University of North Carolina opted last week to hold all undergraduate courses virtually, the university has seen 504 confirmed coronavirus cases since last Monday.The school’s student newspaper, The Daily Tar Heel, first reported the significant outbreak.In the last week, the school’s COVID-19 positivity rate increased to 31.3% of all COVID-19 tests. The week before, it was 13.6%. On week ending August 9, the COVID-19 positivity rate was 2.8%, which gave university officials some confidence that the university could safely reopen.But as cases began to see an uptick last week, the university suspended all in-person learning for undergraduates just a week into the start of the semester. The university also encouraged on-campus residents to return home. The university said that just 15.1% of its main campus housing was being utilized as of Monday, down from 60.5% a week prior.As a number of universities begin in-person learning, the surge of cases at UNC offers a cautionary tale of operating a major university amid the worst pandemic to hit the US in over a century. A student at Monroe Middle School in Michigan is facing possible charges after bringing an inactive grenade to school and threatening to "blow up the school."Police were called to the school after the student showed the device to other students and made the threatening statements. Later interviews determined that he has shown it to others multiple times during the day.A school resources officer searched the student's locker and located the grenade. He noticed that it had been modified to make it incapable of detonating.Further inspection confirmed the device was not capable of exploding and did not pose a threat to anyone.The student was removed from class and taken into custody. He has been placed in the Monroe County Youth center for possession of a device that is represented as an explosive or bomb.Anyone with information in this case is asked to call the Monroe Police Department. 919

Alabama Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore says he will sue the Washington Post over its report alleging he pursued sexual relationships with teenagers -- including a 14-year-old -- when he was in his 30s."The Washington Post published another attack on my character and reputation because they are desperate to stop my political campaign. A white man who allegedly killed two people at a Kroger grocery store in Kentucky tried to enter a predominantly black church nearby minutes before the fatal shooting, police said.The two people killed Wednesday -- Maurice Stallard and Vickie Jones -- were shot in the grocery store and the parking lot, respectively.
