POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) - A grieving Poway cat owner says her heart dropped when she heard a distinctive rattling sound coming from the area where two of her cats were playing.Along Utopia Road just past 3 p.m. Thursday, a picture-perfect afternoon turned into a nightmare in Donna McFarlane's backyard. She was inside her home, heard a commotion and saw her 15-year-old tabby Tyler leap onto the patio, before running into the house. As McFarlane stepped out, she heard an ominous sound."It was just a loud, huge rattle," said McFarlane.She grabbed her other cat Tiger and tossed her into the house, away from the source of the rattle. "Behind the hose, the snake was coiled and hissing. The tail was rattling," said McFarlane.McFarlane ran inside and looked for Tyler."Almost didn't want to find him, because I didn't want to see what I was going to find. When I found him in the living room, he was stumbling over and drooling. Where the snake had bit him on the face, his eyes were bloodshot red," said McFarlane.She rushed Tyler to a nearby veterinarian, but the antivenin treatment wasn't enough. Tyler was put down that night."I still cry. It's devastating," said McFarlane.The next day, the snake, a 3-to-4-foot Pacific Coast rattlesnake, was found and relocated.This year, rains have delayed the first rattlesnake sightings by several weeks. But experts believe those rains could lead to a big snake season. More rain means more food for rodents and other snake prey. According to a study published in Clinical Toxicology, rattlesnake bites in the state jump more than 10% after rainy seasons. Back in Poway, since the attack, McFarlane has begun taking out all the trees and plants where snakes could hide. She's also ordered additional fencing to fill in the gaps and installed a device that emits sound waves to ward off snakes. She has three other cats."Will just be watching them a lot more carefully," said McFarlane.McFarlane says her ordeal shows rattlesnakes can turn up anywhere. She doesn't live near a canyon and had never seen a snake in her yard in the three years she has owned the home. 2117

Kate Brown says she has asked law enforcement leaders to review “any alleged incidents” involving their officers during a protest in Portland late Saturday into early Sunday.The governor said in a series of tweets Sunday evening that she's committed to building trust in the community.Officers were criticized online over the weekend after a news photographer was seen on video being pushed to the ground by an officer."Free speech and free press are two of my core values. I take the use of physical force by law enforcement officers seriously, whether it involves members of the public or the media," Brown said. President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden are both headed to Wisconsin Friday to hold campaign events.Before heading to Wisconsin, Trump was in Michigan for a campaign event. He talked up strong car sales and grousing about Michigan’s governor as he visits the state as part of a three-state swing to the Midwest on Friday.Trump has made criticism of Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer a staple of his rallies in the state. He told the crowd about the need to ease restrictions put in place because of COVID-19, prompting “Lock her up!” chants from the thousands who gathered.Trump, referring to the chants and the media, said: “They blame me every time that happens.”Trump’s visit comes as the number of COVID-19 cases reaches a record high nationally, but he complains that his challenger, former Vice President Joe Biden, has predicted a dark winter ahead.Before heading to Wisconsin at night, Democrat Joe Biden is making his case against President Donald Trump on the coronavirus in Iowa, one of the states hit hardest by the pandemic.Speaking Friday at a drive-in rally at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, Biden rattled off a litany of statistics about how the pandemic has hit the state, noting Iowa has hit a daily record number of cases and hospitalizations this week and highlighting the steep job losses there since the pandemic hit.He mentioned that the Iowa State Fair was canceled this year for the first time since World War II and charged that “Donald Trump has given up.” Biden pledged to enact a plan to halt the spread of the virus and told the crowd, to honks from the cars gathered, “unlike Donald Trump, we will not surrender to the virus.”While Iowa is not a must-win for Biden, most polls there show a close race, and a loss there for the Trump would complicate his path to reelection.Biden also promoted Democratic Senate candidate Theresa Greenfield, telling her, “You have no idea how much you’re going to make my night when you win.” 1979

President Donald Trump on Friday tweeted that an ongoing serial package bomb scare is "unfortunate" because the news media is "not talking politics" and slowing Republican "momentum" ahead of midterm elections."Republicans are doing so well in early voting, and at the polls, and now this “Bomb” stuff happens and the momentum greatly slows - news not talking politics. President Donald Trump on Monday dangled the possibility of lifting the new steel and aluminum tariffs he's imposed if NAFTA is renegotiated to terms more favorable to the US."We have large trade deficits with Mexico and Canada.
