The biggest catch, a 321 bluefin tuna, was caught by San Diego local Andy Khwa and Robbie Ortiz from Santa Barbara.The massive catch happened during a three-day trip aboard the Aztec Sportfishing’s Aztec vessel. We were on a 3 Day trip with 24 passengers and caught over 400 bluefin and Yellowfin. Our standouts were 321 pound, 298 pound, and 292 pound Bluefin tuna,” Captain Greg Gawitt said.“We broke our personal record of a 311 pound bluefin in 2017. The smile on our passengers faces was priceless! We are headed back out this morning and can’t wait to do it again."This isn’t the first time fishermen aboard the vessel made a record-breaking catch. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Sea World employees went on a rescue mission Saturday to free a Sea lion pup from a plastic ribbon wrapped around his neck on Boomer's Beach.The timing is poetic, on World Oceans Day. A day that "provides a unique opportunity to honor, help protect, and conserve our world’s shared ocean," according to WorldOceansDay.org.Sea World Animal Care Specialist Brooke Hubbard said they had been monitoring the pup and received another call Saturday. This time it sounded like the 2-3-year-old sea lion was in an area where they could safely remove the ribbon.A rescue that saved the mammal's life, "when there is lining around it's neck it can constrict it's airways and it's esophagus making it so they can't breathe or eat over time," Hubbard said.Video from her supervisor's perspective shows what it was like when the team snuck up on the sea lion, threw their net and cut the ribbon off with a pair of ordinary scissors.When they released the Sea lion, he scooted back to the ocean, "that's the best feeling in the world, especially since we didn't have to bring it back here and rehabilitate it," she said.Hubbard said this is is completely preventable, "please don't litter at the beach. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Zoo biologists are part of a team of researchers that have rescued the last remaining southwestern pond turtles from an area ravaged by the Bobcat Fire.The researchers spend the last couple of weeks finding and recovering the reptiles from the San Gabriel Mountains. The area, which was scorched by the Bobcat Fire, from Sept. 6 until early November, is now at risk of mudslides and debris flows from rain, which could impact the turtles."Our role as conservationists is to provide refuge and care for wildlife in trouble," said Kim Gray, curator of herpetology and ichthyology, San Diego Zoo Global. "We are happy to make a home for these pond turtles until their home in the mountains can be made safe for them and their offspring."The southwestern pond turtle is now rare in Southern California and faces risks to its survival, including habitat loss, invasive nonnative predators and competitors.Over the two weeks, researchers rescued eight southwestern pond turtles. The turtles will be cared for at the San Diego Zoo until their habitat is made after this year’s rainy season. When their habitat is secure, they will be returned. 1173

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University will begin testing all students who live on campus for COVID-19, the school said Tuesday.According to the university, the testing will start on September 16. After the initial phase of testing, the school will begin testing students at random. “Following the initial phase of benchmark testing for all students in residence this week, we will then launch random testing for the on-campus housing population. During each round of testing, a set of individuals from each residential community group will be randomly sampled to be re-tested,” the school said.The news comes as 648 students tested positive or presumptive positive for the virus.According to SDSU, 644 students have so far tested positive for the virus. Four students are presumptive positive.So far, no faculty or staff have tested positive for coronavirus. 875
