NEW YORK (KGTV) -- An explosion in Queens, New York turned the sky an eerie shade of blue Thursday night. Video posted on social media shows the sky glowing a light blue color as an explosion could be seen off in the distance. WABC reported that the incident was caused by a transformer explosion at a power plant. Utility company Con Edison spokesman Bob McGee told the Associated Press what happened was an "arc flash" — somewhat like a bolt of lightning — after a malfunction in equipment that carries 138,000 volts of electricity 20 feet (6 meters) up in the air. He said the flash subsided on its own.The incident sparked a power outage at LaGuardia Airport, forcing the FAA to issue a ground stop. NEW ORLEANS — A Black man whose life sentence for stealing hedge clippers in a home burglary drew scathing criticism from the chief justice of Louisiana's Supreme Court has been granted parole. Louisiana's high court had denied release for 63-year-old Fair Wayne Bryant earlier this year for the 1997 burglary that netted him a set of hedge clippers. In dissent, Chief Justice Bernette Johnson said the habitual offender law under which Bryant was sentenced was a “modern manifestation” of Jim Crow era laws aimed at jailing Black people for simple crime. Conditions of Bryant's parole include mandatory attendance at Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and community service. 678

NEW YORK (AP) — Lord & Taylor is seeking bankruptcy protection, as is the owner of Men’s Wearhouse and Jos. A. Bank, lengthening the list of major retail chains that have faltered in the COVID-19 pandemic.Household retail names, many longtime anchors in malls nationwide, were already struggling to keep up with a radical reformation in what people buy, and where they buy it. Much of that activity has moved online.Thousands of store closures forced by the arrival of COVID-19 has proved too much.Lord & Taylor, which began as a Manhattan dry goods store in 1824, was sold to the French rental clothing company Le Tote Inc. last year. Both filed for bankruptcy protection, separately, in the Eastern Court of Virginia on Sunday. 745

No one connects with fans better than Baltimore Orioles outfielder Adam Jones, so it's no surprise he went above and beyond to help make a fan's wedding proposal one to remember. Before Monday's exhibition game against Norfolk Tides, Daniel Diaz reached out to the center fielder on Instagram asking if he could do a quick video of him saying "Daniel has a question for his girlfriend Kristine." Instead, Jones had a better idea, he suggest instead of a video recording how about they do it in person.Just as promised right on the diamond Jones helped Diaz pull off a surprise proposal to his girlfriend Kristine Dixon, and she said yes!    702

NEW YORK (AP) -- The nation's largest beauty chain has a deal to place shops in more than 100 Target stores by mid-2021.Ulta Beauty and Target said Tuesday that the shops will be located next to Target's existing beauty sections. Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed. The partnership comes as the coronavirus pandemic has upended shopping habits. Customers are increasingly focused on one-stop shopping experiences as a way to minimize exposure to COVID-19.But the deal could hurt department stores like Macy's, which had already seen their share of their beauty business eroded even before the pandemic. 620
