SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The homeless population in San Diego County has decreased over the last year, according to a San Diego task force.  Every year, the county conducts a tally of how many people are homeless on a single night in January. This year’s count, done on January 26, was coordinated by the Regional Task Force on the Homeless.The task force says the number of homeless throughout the county has decreased six percent to 8,576. However, the number of homeless veterans went up to 1,300 - a 24 percent increase. Supervisor Ron Roberts, the Homeless Task Force Chairman, says permanent housing still needs to be a priority. “Seeing the overall number decline was a positive reversal, but there are far too many swings in data to declare a trend or to not see other areas where we need to increase our focus,” said San Diego County Supervisor Ron Roberts, who chairs the RTFH. “We continue to face many challenges, highlighted by a lack of new housing, a condition that squeezes hardest those with the fewest resources."RELATED: Volunteers count number of homeless living in San DiegoThe numbers from the federally-mandated Point-in-Time Count (PITC) show the number of sheltered and unsheltered homeless people in each of the county’s 18 cities, as well as in unincorporated areas.The County will present the full report, with a more in-depth analysis of the data, to the task force at 3 p.m.The PITC is meant to help communities and policymakers understand their regions’ most current challenges and areas with the most pressing need for limited funding. 1594

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The all-clear was given after a suspicious device forced the evacuation of a building at San Diego City College Monday. The device was reported Monday afternoon in or near Building A, according to the school. The building serves as administrative offices. The college says no classes were affected by the evacuation. The building, as well as a cafeteria will remain closed for the remainder of the day. 431

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The iconic California Tower reached a major milestone Wednesday, welcoming its 100,000th visitor after it reopened in 2015.The tower was built in 1915 but closed in 1935 amid the great depression. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The City of San Diego is taking legal action against the owners, operator and property manager of a independent living facility with squalid living conditions.Ten people lived in the now-closed home on Ewing Street near San Diego State, most of them elderly. Photos from inside the home show mold on mattresses, rat feces, holes in the walls, and overflowing trash cans.The City Attorney's office says fumes from an illegally installed water heater contaminated the interior, and the conditions were so dirty that a man's foot had to be amputated after a sore got infected. Independent Living Facilities are unlicensed and unregulated. They are often a last chance for vulnerable people to avoid becoming homeless - paying rent with social security or disability checks. Elliott's office is suing the owners, property manager, and operator, who could be forced to pay up to million. Additionally, operator Mark Rogers is being charged with 22 misdemeanors. Rogers also owns an independent living facility in El Cajon, where a tenant was murdered with a frying pan late last year. Morgan Cherry, who lives next door, said the home has a reputation in the neighborhood, but that the pictures took it to a new level. "I had no idea how bad it was," she said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The first round of artists for San Diego’s Wonderfront music festival, supported by the star power of Tony Hawk, Trevor Hoffman, and Rob Machado, was announced Monday. The event will take place on seven stages in parks and on piers along the Port of San Diego, from South Embarcadero up to Broadway Pier. Wonderfront is scheduled for Nov. 22-24, 2019, the weekend before Thanksgiving. Wonderfront organizers plan to mix well-known stars with local favorites and emerging artists. “Our goal with this lineup was to have it stacked from start to finish each day with great artists. It’s hard to really call any certain bands our so-called headliners as so many lines of bands on this festival are all headliners in their own right,” said Wonderfront co-founder Paul Thornton. The first round of artists, announced Monday, include Miguel, Slightly Stoopid, Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals, MGMT, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Nicky Jam, Don Omar, Vince Staples, Tyga, Los Angeles Azules, Tucanes de Tijuana, Walk the Moon, Phantogram, X Ambassadors, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Lil Dicky, Big Gigantic, and Pennywise. A second round of artists will be named later in the summer, organizers said. North County resident Tony Hawk will have a presence at the festival with the Huckjam stage for music and a skateboarding ramp, where he and other pro skaters will perform tricks. “I’m excited to bring back the Huckjam format (choreographed and freestyle skating with live music) after 10 years of hiatus, and there is no better place for it than my hometown.
