It’s not uncommon to convert an old warehouse into lofts or apartments. But what about converting something a little more unique, a little more historic?Something like, a church? That’s what developers did in a Denver, Colorado neighborhood. The Gothic-revival, Methodist Episcopal church was built in 1889, designed by Denver architect Franklin E. Kidder. It was declared an historic landmark in 1970. But that didn't stop it from ending up abandoned as the neighborhood changed.Enter developers with a vision. They re-envisioned the church as The Sanctuary Lofts. They preserved much of the church’s unique features, like the stained-glass windows, exposed brick, and wood paneling, and converted the church into condominiums. There’s even a confessional in one of the condos serving as the room’s focal point. One of the 12 condos in this church was recently on the market. Realtor David Wheaton said each unit offers different pieces of the past. “In some units we actually have stained glass windows exposed and holy items that were a part of the church that are actually infused into the units," said Wheaton. “Many of these buildings such as this church, the congregation wasn’t able to support it financially. It kind of fell into disrepair for a while and it was deconsecrated at some time.”While this conversion was done long before the current housing crisis, it underscores the need to find places to live. In this case, the condos come with a completely unique twist on what’s possible. This converted church is just one example of creative living makeovers. The Arcade, the first indoor shopping mall in the United States, is now home to 48 apartments.  The Arcade is in Providence, Rhode Island and was built in 1828. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and a National Historic Landmark. In Charleston, South Carolina, the Cigar Factory is another example of an historic building beginning a new chapter.  It was built in 1881 as a cotton manufacturing facility before converting to cigar production in 1903. While plans to transform it into condos 100 years later were ultimately scrapped, it’s now home to office, restaurant and event space.  2265

In recent days, several coronavirus outbreaks among teams and athletes have demonstrated the enormous challenge ahead for sports leagues attempting to return to action. While non-contact individual sports like NASCAR and golf have been able to resume, many other sports are struggling to formalize plans to return to play. Other than the NFL, which is in its offseason, only one of the five other major sports leagues have a firm return date.Professional soccer’s MLS is slated to resume on July 8 with a tournament being played in Orlando. For professional baseball, hockey and basketball, a resumption of play is still up in the air. The NBA said it plans to resume play in Orlando at some point later in the summer. The NHL is determining two host cities to conduct an expanded postseason. MLB said late Monday that it will require players to accept health and safety protocols before resuming play. But the road to resuming play could contain land mines. Here are a few examples:- The Orlando Pride women’s soccer team, which recently resumed training camp, announced it will not participate in an upcoming tournament after six players tested positive for the coronavirus.- The Basketball Tournament, which is a summer basketball tournament featuring former college and international stars, announced Monday one of its teams withdrew from next month’s next competition after a player tested positive for the virus.- Tennis stars Grigor Dimitrov and Borna Coric both tested positive for the coronavirus after participating in a charity tennis tournament organized by Novak Djokovic. The Adria Tour canceled its final match in Croatia on Sunday after Dimitrov’s diagnosis. Djokovic and the tournament as a whole have come under fire for flouting social distancing norms.- A number of college football teams have reported outbreaks. Clemson had 23 players test positive, and Kansas State said it had 13 positive tests for the virus. College football teams began allowing voluntary workouts on campus earlier this month.Last week, Dr. Anthony Fauci placed skepticism on whether the NFL season would even be played."Unless players are essentially in a bubble -- insulated from the community and they are tested nearly every day -- it would be very hard to see how football is able to be played this fall," Dr. Fauci told CNN. "If there is a second wave, which is certainly a possibility and which would be complicated by the predictable flu season, football may not happen this year."Leagues such as the NFL have said they are putting together plans which are heavily reliant on frequent testing of players and staff. Plans also rely on limiting the number of people who interact with team personnel at games and practices. But relying on frequent testing in lieu of social distancing also has its drawbacks, which include a large number of false negatives. 2861

It took Congress almost nine months, but they have finally agreed on another stimulus pkg. The deal provides a one-time stimulus check, extends the eviction mortarium another month, and adds an additional 0 supplemental to extended unemployment benefits. In total, it’s a 0 billion plan that now protects roughly 40 million Americans from potentially being evicted from their homes and prevents 12 million Americans from losing out on unemployment benefits.“It is a success and a win because that won’t happen,” said Stephanie Freed, “Beyond that, it’s not much of a win.”Stephanie Freed is among millions of Americans who are unemployed and have already expired out of unemployment benefits. Under the new deal, she will be able to now apply for unemployment again and will be eligible for the additional 0 weekly supplemental. However, even with reinstated and slightly higher benefits, it will still be a struggle to get by.“The 0 is half of what people needed to survive, and the bigger problem is that it is not retroactive,” said Freed. “There has been five months with no additional benefit, state UI is not a livable wage.”Freed has created an online organization called ExtendPUA in order to help others who are also struggling with unemployment during the pandemic. There are members of Extend PUA that have been getting as little as a week in unemployment benefits since the 0 federal supplemental dropped off in July.Grant McDonald is the co-founder of Extend PUA and knows firsthand that state unemployment benefits alone are not enough to survive. Like many, he has had to drain his savings and take on significant debt to just keep him barely afloat.“Personally, I have not kept up with the number because I have just been trying to keep up with it all,” said McDonald. “I am just trying to pay as much as I can and watch my savings slowly disappear.”In the latest stimulus package, Congress did agree on a 0 stimulus check that some say could help with debt accumulated.“I think 0 is what rich people think poor people think is a lot of money, when in reality, that additional 0 plus the 0, one-time, is not going to help anyone pay any of the accumulated debts,” McDonald added. For Freed, McDonald, and the thousands of unemployed people who have reached out to Extend PUA, the new stimulus deal is something, but nothing close to what they’ve been waiting nearly nine months for.“We understand there are some wins here but mostly it means that we have to keep fighting,” said Freed. The Biden administration has called this latest package a “down payment” to the American people, signaling an expectation for yet another more robust stimulus deal. Members of Congress, on both sides of the aisle, have also mentioned a need for another stimulus deal soon. However, similar messaging was heard after the passage of the CARES Act, and then it took nearly nine months to see a significantly smaller relief package. 2965

In just the latest reminder of the dangers of pollution in our oceans, a dead whale in Indonesia has been found with 13.2 pounds (six kilograms) of plastic waste in its stomach. The 31.17-foot sperm whale was found near Kapota Island in Wakatobi National Park, southeast of Sulawesi.Park officials found bags, plastic bottles, sandals and 115 plastic cups in the whale's stomach, as well as a sack containing more than 1,000 pieces of string."Although we have not been able to deduce the cause of death, the facts that we see are truly awful," said Dwi Suprapti, marine species conservation coordinator at WWF-Indonesia, in a statement to CNN.The macabre discovery was made in an area popular with tourists and comes at a time of increasing concern over the impact of plastic pollution on marine life.In June, a short-fin male pilot whale died in southern Thailand and was later found to have ingested more than 17 pounds of plastic bags and packaging.During an autopsy, veterinarians found more than 80 plastic bags in the whale's stomach.A 2015 report by Ocean Conservancy and the McKinsey Center for Business and Environment found that over 50% of the plastic leaking into world oceans comes from China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, suggesting that the two whales died in dangerous waters for marine life. The report claims that a 65% reduction in plastic waste leakage in those five countries would lead to a 45% reduction globally.Without intervention, the amount of plastic cluttering the Earth's oceans will triple within a decade, according to a recent study by the UK government. However, there is evidence that lawmakers are taking notice of the threat, as the European Parliament voted to ban single-use plastics in October. The proposal covers items such as straws, cotton swabs and cutlery, in addition to obliging EU states to recycle 90% of plastic bottles by 2025.In October, the dangers of plastic were underlined when a decades-old bottle washed up almost intact on a UK beach. The plastic bottle of dishwashing liquid was at least 47 years old, with its branding still clearly visible.The-CNN-Wire 2140
