SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The City of San Diego is one step closer to approving the 6.5M purchase of two hotels to permanently house homeless people living in the convention center.When the pandemic hit in March, the Bridge Shelters and Golden Hall were cleared out and about a thousand people were brought into the convention center, according to the mayor's office.The emergency setup allowed for proper social distancing, and resources to request PPE and other supplies.The convention center will be emptied in December to prepare to open for events when it is safe.Since the pandemic, downtown has looked different according to Marshall Anderson, Vice President of Government Affairs with the Downtown San Diego Partnership."I would encourage all of you to walk around downtown so you can see just about how safe and livable it is at the moment ... For too long has downtown acted as the region's homeless shelter. It's nice to see another neighborhood bearing some of the responsibility for sheltering some of our most vulnerable," he said.The city plans to buy two Residence Inn hotels, one in Kearney Mesa, the other in Mission Valley. Together the hotels could house about 400 people and support tenants who are accessing services for mental health and substance abuse issues.During the city's Public Safety and Livable Communities Committee Meeting Wednesday, Mission Valley neighbors voiced their complaints."It's a bad idea, I am absolutely opposed to this project," a man who has lived in Mission Valley for 30 years said."My real concern is obviously the safety of my community but also the safety of the potential residents ... I am just opposed to this idea because it doesn't seem practical for the city and I feel like it opens the city up to a lot of liability in terms of motorist versus pedestrian accidents," a woman living in the same neighborhood added. She is concerned there is not enough transit or pedestrian infrastructure in the area.The people who would move into the hotels, according to the mayor's office, are stable and already accessing services for mental health and substance abuse. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The discovery of suspicious packages near a downtown San Diego building prompted evacuations, but the boxes were later determined to be harmless.Authorities were called an area near the intersection of 6th Avenue and B Street at around 8:30 a.m. after several white boxes were found and deemed suspicious.The WeWork building through the 13th floor was evacuated and traffic lanes were closed in a nearby area due to the investigation. San Diego Union-Tribune staff members, who occupy space in the building, were forced to evacuate, 10News learned."We’ve seen some different tragedies in newsrooms around the country so I don’t think this is 100% a surprise for any newsroom to face something like this. Hours earlier, news of the Secret Service intercepting suspicious packages addressed to Former First Lady Hillary Clinton, President Obama, and CNN broke. The boxes in San Diego were at the SanDiego Union-Tribune headquarters, Senator Kamala Harris’ office, and other businesses.“Out of an abundance of caution, this building at 6th and B was evacuated, and all the neighboring businesses," Lt. She said the FBI investigators are now focusing on profiling the senders.“What do the targets have in common? This case appears to be political ideology. While this morning’s incident at the San Diego Union-Tribune headquarters turned out to be non-threatening, Patrick said the heavy police presence and bomb squad response were appropriate."We want to make sure that we never let our guard down and we take every report as serious as we can," Patrick said. Unlike political figures, regular citizens do not have the luxury of having the secret service monitoring our mail. So Patrick said it is essential that we be extra vigilant, especially during the season of giving. “Even rudimentary bombs can explode in your face," Patrick said. "Unfamiliar packages should be treated with caution. Is there a return address and is it a name you don’t recognize? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The man who attacked a teenage Syrian refugee on a San Diego trolley pleaded guilty Monday. Adrian Vergara, 26, was arrested Oct. 22 on an unrelated misdemeanor drug charge. While he was in custody, he was recognized in connection to the ongoing hate crime investigation. The 17-year-old boy was beaten on a Metropolitan Transit System car Oct. 15. Representatives for the Partnership for the Advancement of New Americans (PANA), who spoke on the teen's behalf, told 10News the teen was speaking Arabic while on FaceTime with a friend when a man on the trolley asked him, "Where are you from? Are you Mexican?" RELATED: Teen attacked on trolley in possible hate crime The teen reportedly responded, "No, I am Arab." According to the teen, the man then started punching him and cursing while using racial slurs. The victim left the trolley at the 62nd Street station in Encanto. Vergara pleaded guilty to assault and hate crime charges. As part of the plea deal, Vergara will be sentenced December 5 to five years in prison. 1051
