SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dozens of officers in San Diego County have been convicted of crimes and some are still on the job. That's according to a new investigation by several newsrooms across the state, including the Voice of San Diego.A few examples of convicted cops include the case of former SDPD Sergeant Oscar Armenta who pleaded guilty to attacking his girlfriend but didn’t get any jail time. Former SDPD Officer Anthony Arevalos was convicted of groping women and trying to elicit sexual favors during traffic stops. Married ex-SDPD Officers Bryce and Jennifer Charpentier admitted to stealing and taking prescription drugs while on the clock. Other officers like Karen Almos and Jeffrey Blackford got DUIs and are reportedly still working for SDPD, according to a massive new database of convicted law enforcement officers.Complete Coverage: The Transparency ProjectThe database is a collaborative project from several news organizations including the Voice of San Diego, which was coordinated by the Investigative Reporting Program at UC Berkeley and the Bay Area News Group. The project was born after an open-records request last year shed light on a list that came from the California Commission of Peace Officers Standards and Training which revealed close to 12,000 state officers and applicants who’ve been found guilty of various offenses. According to the database, of the more than two dozen convicted San Diego County officers, the majority, 17, were from San Diego Police Department. There were six officers from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, two from Chula Vista Police Department, one from Oceanside Police Department, one from Carlsbad Police Department and one from San Diego City Schools Police.Monday, an SDPD spokesperson confirmed with 10News that he told the Voice of San Diego, in part, "Cops make mistakes like everyone else and local jurisdictions should be able to determine for themselves whether that person is worthy of continuing to carry a badge." 2003

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Every Thursday afternoon in Logan Heights, people line up to get food.Angela Brannon-Baptiste is the woman who started the pantry and the organization that supplies it, called "It's All About the Kids".The non-profit has been serving local families since 2004, handing out more than 1.5 million meals and counting."They tell us that for many of them this is the only food they're receiving because there's just no money to buy food," said Baptiste.When the pandemic hit the group saw the need grow almost overnight."We saw hundreds of additional families come to see us each week and it was a bit frightening," Baptiste explained.Although they'd like to help everyone, they're restricted by their own means.Unlike some other food distribution programs that operate on a first come first serve basis, It's All About the Kids takes a more targeted approach."We decided we needed to narrow that down and really work with the schools to identify who was most in need, so that's who we help now," Baptiste said.At this point, that help is going to about 2,200 families currently on the program.Those who show up get boxes of not just something to eat, but something good to eat.Batiste says it's important they provide as much fresh food as possible, " I think that food is so important and that is our responsibility as successful adults to give back to those that are less fortunate and to help them, so that's just always been my mantra." 1463

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Fernanda Whitworth watched her husband Ralph battle cancer for years."He couldn't swallow, he couldn't talk or basically eat. So he lost 45 pounds, it's literally barbaric."Ralph Whitworth was diagnosed with HPV-related tongue cancer in 2013. It eventually claimed his life in 2016.Before Ralph died, the Whitworths began a quest to find a cure. It's a mission Fernanda has carried on."I feel like we are so close; we're on the tipping point of finding a cure," she explained. The nonprofit they founded in San Diego, The Immunotherapy Foundation, is dedicated to funding the most promising research on HPV-driven cancers."This is a huge problem. Not only does HPV account for six different cancer types, almost 100 percent of cervical cancers and in men, now those instances are rising for head and neck cancer, " said Dr. Ezra Cohn, who is part of the foundation's medical team. The Centers for Disease Control estimate that about 14 million people get a new HPV infection every year in the U.S. Nearly all men and women who have ever had sex get at least one type of genital HPV at some time in their lives. The Immunotherapy Foundation has focused its efforts on three categories:  1272

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Family members are mourning the COVID-related death of an Olympic gold medalist and lifelong San Diegan.More than 4 decades ago, Arnie Robinson Jr. stood at the top of the Olympic podium."He was always so driven and so focused," said Arnie Robinson Jr.'s son, PaulPaul says his father first started feeling sick in mid-November."Labored breathing, coughing," said Paul.Robinson Jr. tested positive for coronavirus but after a week and a half, he started feeling better. A week later, on December 2, he was with a caregiver at this Skyline Hills home."Out of the blue, he struggled to take breaths," said Paul.That day, Robinson Jr. passed away at his home at the age of 72."You’re just in a state of shock and disbelief over how it happened," said Paul.It was disbelief and grief over a father and local sports legend.A high school track star at Morse High, Robinson Jr. went to San Diego Mesa College and San Diego State University, before winning a bronze medal in the long jump at the 1972 Olympics and a gold medal at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal."I think that’s one of the things that drove him. Wanting to achieve something really, really big ... setting it out there and making it happen," said Paul.That commitment was his calling card. He served in the Army and later, worked a track coach at Mesa College for three decades.In 2004, he was diagnosed with brain cancer, a grade 4 glioblastoma and given six months to live. He went through several round of chemo and radiation."After some research, a complete 180 on his diet. Looking back on it now, he saw it as another challenge," said Paul.Some 16 years later, he was in remission when he tested positive for COVID-19. Paul believes he contracted it from one of his caregivers, who also tested positive.His message to others: wear masks and take every precaution."Respect COVID for what it is. What we need is strength and some resolve that we haven't seen yet,” said former Vice President Joe Biden.In an interview, candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders renewed calls for an assault weapons ban but acknowledged uwpards of 10 million are already in civilian hands. “That is more than the United States military has,” Sanders said.
