ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) -- Two women were rescued from a cliff in Encinitas early Sunday morning. San Diego Fire-Rescue was called to the cliffs around 2:20 a.m.According to the department, two women climbed down the cliffs and were unable to get back up. The department says the women were about a 30-foot drop away from the beach. Crews were able to carry the women to the top of the cliff in about an hour. It’s unclear if alcohol or drugs were involved in the incident. 483

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - Police are investigating an elaborate phone scam that cost an Encinitas woman ,400.Lauren Kennedy says she was driving to work Wednesday morning when she received a phone call around 8:30 a.m. She says she had just gotten off the phone with her mother when all of a sudden she was calling her back.But when she answered, it wasn’t her mother’s voice.“It was a man’s voice telling me he had abducted my mother and he was going to kill her if I didn't do exactly as he told me,” Kennedy said.Kennedy said it became so real when she heard her mother’s voice on the other line.“At that point, that’s when I knew it was real," she said. "I heard her in the background, and I thought for sure that they had taken her.”The man on the other line directed her to go to the nearest grocery store and put money into Money Pak cards. Then they demanded the card numbers over the phone and ordered her to destroy the cards afterward.They told her to cut up the cards and email them photo evidence that they had been destroyed.“At that time he hung up and never called me back,” she explained. “So within a minute or two, I called my mom’s phone and at that time, she answered.”That’s when Kennedy’s realized she had fallen victim to an elaborate phone scam.The Sheriff’s Department says the scammers used a “spoofing device” to make it look like the phone was made from her mother’s phone number.The scammers also called Kennedy’s’ mother in the middle of the fake ransom call. They got her worked up by saying they had her daughter.“They just wanted her to be scared and sound scared. All I heard was her saying my name. I still can't believe it," Kennedy said. “I think their whole intention with calling her was to have her voice in the background while they were asking me to do whatever they wanted me to do." Kennedy says she not sure how the scammers got her information or her mother’s. She says she is always careful with her information and weary of scams.“I don't answer phone calls I don't recognize,” she said. “I don't answer blocked numbers. I let people leave voicemails to determine if it’s legit or not. I feel like the public needs to know about this (scam) because if I can fall for this, anybody can fall for this.”In an email, to 10News the Sheriff’s Department says people should hang up when they get phone calls like this and should immediately call law enforcement.Kennedy says that's what her mother did when she go the call, but for her  - it’s easier said than done.“This was life or death," she said. ESCONDIDO (CNS) - A 31-year-old man was jailed Tuesday on suspicion of seriously injuring another man with a hatchet during a fight at an Escondido transit center, police said. Dispatchers received a call around 9:40 p.m. Monday from a person who reported that two men were fighting at the Escondido Transit Center on West Valley Parkway, west of Centre City Parkway, Escondido police Sgt. Mike Graesser said. Officers responded to the scene and found both men near the transit center suffering from serious injuries, Graesser said. Both men were taken to a hospital for treatment of their injuries, which were not believed to be life-threatening, Graesser said. Exactly what prompted the fight remains unclear, but investigators were in the process of obtaining video from cameras at the transit center, Graesser said. ENCINITAS, Calif., (KGTV) -- Friends and family celebrated the survival of 14-year-old Keane Webre-Hayes at a community paddle-out event. The teenager was attacked by a great white shark at Beacon's Beach one year ago this month. The line between life and death is so thin for Keane."People come up to me and say, 'hey what's that from'?" Keane said as he pointed at the large scars on this left cheek, ear, and neck. Last September, the then 13-year-old was bitten by a great white shark while lobster diving at Beacon's Beach. "I swam 70 yards to a kayak with basically no arm," Keane said. He screamed for help toward a few kayakers in the distance. That is when he met Matthew Ephron, who helped him get to shore. "He did most of the work, and we just got him in so that he wouldn't be out there forever," Ephron said. Doctors said Keane lost half of the blood in his body. But 1,000 stitches later, the boy survived. And for the last year, doctors, trainers, therapists, and teachers helped Keane find his new normal."We honestly couldn't have gone through it without the support of the community," Keane's mother, Ellie Hayes, said. "The hugs, the love, the gifts, the support."So to say thank you, Keane's family hosted a paddle-out at Moon Light State Beach to honor his survival. "Without them, I would not be able to move my arm," Keane said. "I probably would not be who I am today without them."Keane has made incredible strides. From being bedridden for weeks, he now plays in a club beach volleyball team. Family and friends said Saturday's paddle-out is a celebration of life and proof of Keane's incredible resilience. "I definitely want people to know that I can do things, and also if I can do that, you can do that if you put your mind to it," Keane said. Local surf-art legend Andy Davis also attended the event and gave Keane a custom painting featuring a man on a surfboard in Keane's favorite color, pink. 1937
