The Chico Mall has everything you'd expect to find there during the holiday season -- non-stop Christmas music, trees and oversized ornaments, along with signs advertising great deals for increasingly frenzied shoppers. It also has a temporary classroom space and a FEMA Disaster Recovery Center to help people who lost their homes in the Camp Fire, which devastated nearby Paradise, California, and the surrounding area. While they're at the mall to sign up for benefits or take care of other business, a lot of parents are bringing their kids to meet Santa Claus, said Jim Hoskins, the Chico Mall Santa. The Kentucky native, who said he'd prefer you call him Santa, has a gentle voice and a kind smile. He ended his interview with a quick "Ho, ho, ho" as he hung up the phone. He said you'd never know that many of the children he's met had lost their homes."Most of them are smiling," he said, though he does have to win over the occasional crier. "They are astounding."The kids' basic needs have been taken care off, thanks to FEMA and the generosity of the community, Hoskins said, so they're asking Santa for dirt bikes, iPhones, Paw Patrol toys and something called L.O.L Surprise dolls. But many of them do ask for something that Santa can't give -- a home."I usually say 'I can't do this in a year. I don't have the magic to do it right now, but we will get you one,'" he said. "I can't give them instant gratification on that, but I can give them some satisfaction that it will be done."He said some children have been concerned that Santa wouldn't be able to find them since their homes have burned down. He says they don't need to worry about that."I say 'I know your relatives and I've got GPS to track you with,'" he said. "It makes them feel better once their parents confirm it."Kylie Wrobel took her 7-year-old daughter, Ellie, to see Santa on Saturday. The first thing she asked for was toys for her dog, Daisy."She has the biggest heart," Wrobel said. "She was worried about our dog before herself, and then she asked for a Barbie mansion."Wrobel said she only grabbed her cell phone charger before leaving her Paradise rental house. She didn't have rental insurance, so they lost everything.Wrobel usually takes a picture of her daughter and Santa on her phone instead of buying one from the mall, she said, but this year's photo was really cute -- and it's the only hard copy photo they have now. They picked out a frame and put it out in the trailer where they're living, she said, along with their "Elf on a Shelf."Kathleen Mahnke said that Santa waved at her twin boys, who are about to turn two, as they they were walking through the mall to the FEMA center."As a mom, I can tell who is a kid lover," she said. "He was kind and fun, and patient with understanding that young kids take a while to warm up to strangers."She said she also appreciated the mall offering half off the photo packages for people who went through the fire.Hoskins says he's amazed by how resilient the children and their parents are when he meets them."I see more positive outlooks and attitudes than I do negative," he said. 3141

The decades-old sexual assault and murder of a young girl has been solved, thanks to DNA and genealogy records. In September 1982, 8-year-old Kelly Prosser was walking home from school in Columbus, Ohio. Prosser never made it home, and her body was found in a cornfield two days later after her raincoat was spotted. The case went unsolved for decades.DNA evidence from the items collected at the time was entered into CODIS in 2014. There were no hits.Friday, Prosser’s killer was identified as Harold Warren Jarrell, with the help of DNA evidence and genealogical research. Jarrell is now deceased, living relatives helped officers confirm details about Jarrell’s involvement. In 1977, Jarrell was charged with abducting a girl on the north side of Columbus, he was released in early 1982. Jarrell was never mentioned in Prosser’s case file. 848

The gluttony known as the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest will go on this Saturday, but like many events being held this year, will not feature a live audience. While the event will be held at a private location in NYC, it’s unclear if all of the competitors will be able to make it.Last week, New York began requiring visitors from states with large numbers of COVID-19 cases to self-quarantine for 14 days. For perennial champion Joey Chestnut, he was fortunate to arrive in NYC in time not to be required to quarantine. Chestnut is coming into the 2020 competition after consuming 71 hot dogs in 10 minutes during the 2019 event. His 2019 performance was just shy of his record of 74 hot dogs set in 2018.“I arrived to NYC early because of risk of visitors to NY needing quarantine, my last practices were scrapped. Staying positive and focused on the 4th,” Chestnut said. The competition will air live on ESPN starting at noon on Saturday.“We’re ecstatic to make the announcement that the Hot Dog-Eating Contest will take place this year,” states James Walker, Nathan’s Famous Senior Vice President, Restaurants. “2020 has been a year for the history books, and the realization that this storied July 4th tradition would be able to occur, is a great feeling. With that being said, our country and our world has endured so much in the last couple of months, that we’d be remiss if we didn’t use this moment to honor those that have done so much for each of us during this time.” 1493

The Dow Jones Industrial Average traded above 30,000 points for the first time Tuesday. The crest came as investors were encouraged by the latest progress on developing coronavirus vaccines and news that the transition of power in the U.S. to President-elect Joe Biden will finally begin.Traders were also encouraged by news that Biden had selected Janet Yellen, a widely respected former Federal Reserve chair, as treasury secretary. The Dow rose more than 400 points, or 1.4%, to trade just over 30,000 midday Tuesday. The S&P 500 index, which has a far greater impact on 401(k) accounts than the Dow, rose 1.3%.Shortly after the Dow crested, President Donald Trump delivered remarks at the White House, congratulating his administration and the people of the U.S.“The stock market has just broken 30,000, never been broken, that number, that’s a sacred number, 30,000. Nobody thought they’d ever see it,” said Trump. “That’s the 9th time since the beginning of 2020 and it’s the 48th time that we’ve broken records during the Trump administration. And I just want to congratulate all the people within the administration that work so hard. And most importantly, I want to congratulate the people of our country, because there are no people like you.”Like others, Trump attributed the success of the stock market to the promising news that multiple vaccines are proving to be effective and headed for FDA approval.“Despite everything that’s taken place with the pandemic, I’m very thrilled with what’s happened on the vaccine front,” said Trump. “That’s been absolutely incredible. Nothing like that has ever happened medically and I think people are acknowledging that and it’s having a big effect.”Trump, who often speaks for long periods of time and has sparred with the media in the past, kept Tuesday’s remarks short and didn’t take questions as reporters asked him why he hasn’t conceded to Biden for the good of the country.Watch the president’s remarks below: 1979

The coronavirus pandemic has had a big impact on businesses of all kinds, restaurants and retailers alike are closing permanently and others are doing what they can to financially survive. That also means it could be a good time for consumers looking for specific items to save some money. The website rather-be-shopping.com compiled a list of 13 items that have become cheaper during the pandemic.Items like clothing for the whole family. Retailers like Macy’s, Stein Mart, Ann Taylor, and many more are closing anywhere from several stores to most of them. That could mean deep discounts during liquidation sales. Those looking for a home or want to refinance will find low mortgage rates right now. Mortgage rates have hit an all-time low.Gas is about 50 cents cheaper nationally than it was in the summer of 2019. Maybe it’s time for a road trip or long drive and save on fuel prices. That also contributes to low shipping costs. Many online sites are offering no or low shipping costs right now.In time for school to start, technology is cheaper and many places are offering discounts on laptops and electronic devices and headphones that can be used for at-home learning. There are also 16 states with "no sales tax" weekends to encourage shopping. 1259
