MENLO PARK, Calif. – Facebook is offering to pay some of its users to deactivate their accounts in the weeks leading up to the 2020 election.It’s part of a new research partnership Facebook is launching to better understand the impact its website and Instagram have on key political attitudes and behaviors during U.S. elections.“We need to better understand whether social media makes us more polarized as a society, or if it largely reflects the divisions that already exist; if it helps people to become better informed about politics, or less; or if it affects people’s attitudes towards government and democracy, including whether and how they vote,” said Facebook when it announced the study Thursday.Facebook expects between 200,000 and 400,000 adults will choose to participate in the study. They’re said to be experts in the fields of elections, democracy and social media.Facebook says researchers will select and invite representative, scientific samples of people in the U.S. to participate in the study.“Some potential participants will see a notice in Facebook or Instagram inviting them to take part in the study,” wrote Facebook. “Study samples will be designed to ensure that participants mirror the diversity of the US adult population, as well as users of Facebook and Instagram.”Facebook said last week that the study will start soon and end in December, but it doesn’t expect to publish any findings until mid-2021 at the earliest and it doesn't expect the research to affect the outcome of the election. 3038

Many school districts around the United States have yet to declare what the upcoming school year will look like for students, whether they’ll be heading back into a school building to learn or continue remote learning. That age range would be from first grade to third grade, and we would follow the curriculum that was developed by our community, our schools,” added Quadrozzi.With micro-schooling, a few families join together to create a homeschooling pod. Quadrozzi is planning on converting her daughter’s playroom into the classroom. They’re leaning towards paying an educational facilitator to teach the children during the week.“That could be anyone from a retired teacher, to a teacher’s aide, to anyone who got laid off,” said Quadrozzi.One of the concerns around micro-schooling pods is that there are many parents who can’t afford to pay someone else to teach their kids. However, there are some parents finding a way to make micro-schooling pods more affordable.“I am a stay-at-home mom and I realize I am very fortunate to be able to do that, but the other parents in our pod are working parents,” said Gentel Larochelle.Larochelle’s pod has each parent teaching their group of five kids, one day of the week.Not only is their micro-schooling pod model more cost-effective, but it frees up time for some parents who have to work.“If this is something that parents want to do, the options are there for them it just takes a little creativity and a little bit of sacrifice,” Larochelle added.Pods can be formed, organically, with your friends and family, or there are Facebook groups now forming in almost every state around the country where parents are making connections.These two Massachusetts moms have learned the key to creating a pod is starting your search early. You’ll need time to talk with other parents that may be in your group about mostly creating a set of rule or pact for your pod, especially around social distancing outside the created classroom. Because the main reason for micro-schooling is to give kids some socialization while reducing their health risks.“My genuine hope is that this is a one-year thing and that by next fall, things are much, much different,” said Larochelle. 3165

Millions of people are still unemployed in the United States. On one hand, the unemployment rate has been going down since its peak in June. On the other hand, it’s still almost triple what it was before the pandemic.“I just never anticipated this is where we would be in September,” said Bridget Altenburg, president of the National Able Network.For 40 years, the National Able Network has been helping people find work. But in the past six months, it has been working overtime on that. The organization has been getting roughly 100 calls for employment help a day, serving more than 10,000 people since March.“It is scary for the people that we are talking to,” said Altenburg. “It’s scary for them because we thought it would be a month or two months of unemployment, and here we are, basically six months later, trying to help people navigate who’s hiring.”Altenburg has two key pieces of advice for anyone unemployed right now. One, she is emphatic that there are employers out there hiring.“There are employers that are desperate for people,” said Altenburg. “So, don’t immediately assume that there is nothing out there, so I might as well not look.”Secondly, Altenburg recommends anyone unemployed take a moment to figure out potential jobs in current high-demand fields and think creatively about how your current skill sets apply to those potential jobs.“Don’t sell yourself short in terms of what makes you uniquely qualified for that role,” she added.For example, you wouldn’t think of a restaurant worker having a unique skill set to be a good fit in the IT field, but the National Able Network has been training them to switch over and IT employers are flocking to recruit these workers.“People who have been servers intuitively know customer service in a way that I could never teach somebody that is in IT,” Altenburg explained.In addition to the National Able Network, there is also about 2,400 government-funded American Job Centers nationwide offering free career and job hunt services. In addition, most public libraries, even many community colleges, are offering free resume and some career services help as well.“At Lyft, when we think of the way we can make on communities, we think about how we can use transportation to do so,” said Lisa Boyd with Lyft.The ride-share company has even jumped in to help the millions on the job hunt. It is providing free rides, now in 20 cities, to people going to and from job interviews, job training, and even free rides to work until they get their first paycheck at their new job.The program started in 2019, but at the beginning of the pandemic, Lyft expanded it to help with the increased need.“We have a job access hub on our Lyft website,” said Boyd. “That will help you be able to go in and sign up on a form.”Anyone in need of the free ride while you job hunt or start a new job can go to Lyft's Job Access Page on its website. All you have to do is provide info on where you live, what kind of help you need, and the site will connect you with your local United Way or Goodwill.
