DENTON, Texas – Get ready for some major closet envy. An impressive collection of clothing, shoes and accessories archives hundreds of years of fashion history. Some even go back 1,000 years. Step inside the 13,000 square foot space and you’ll find endless racks of clothing and accessories packed from floor to ceiling. “These are important parts of fashionista history that need to be preserved,” said Annette Becker, the director of the Texas Fashion Collection at the University of North Texas. The entire collection has been built through donations. “We have pieces that are examples of French couture from the most elite parts of the fashion design world to things that were made on someone's kitchen table by their grandmother,” said Becker. Started in 1938, UNT took custody of the collection in 1972. Since then it has grown to nearly 20,000 garments and accessories including 1,400 pairs of shoes, 2,500 hats and 750 handbags. Becker proudly shows off some of the collection’s most prized possessions. “This is a dress that Audrey Hepburn wore in the final scene of the film Charade and it was donated to us by Hubert de Givenchy who designed most of Audrey Hepburn's clothing for film,” she said. “We have a wide variety of examples from throughout fashion history in our collection and the oldest piece we have is a pre-Colombian textile fragment that's around 1,000 years old. We have to keep this really carefully stored in this acid free cardboard,” she explains. The piece was woven before synthetic dyes were even created. “So that red color really meant power and status,” said Becker. Today, the archive that spans primarily over 250 years is a valuable historical resource for researchers and students. But right now, it’s only available to visiting designers and research students. The ultimate goal is to document everything in the collection and make it accessible to anyone around the world. “Whether that's 8-year-olds who are thinking about a future career in fashion design to fashion curator curators from Paris who have come to our collection to do research,” said Becker. That means having every single item photographed and digitized so that anyone can see the collection online. Megan DeSoto, an Adjunct Photography Instructor at UNT, is spearheading the effort. “We're taking a lot of time to make these really high-resolution well-made photographs so that they're only handled once photographed once and then taken back to where they're being preserved,” said DeSoto. Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul has introduced a bill to ban no-knock warrants nationwide in the wake of Breonna Taylor's shooting death in Louisville.The "Justice for Breonna Taylor" Act bans federal law enforcement officers from forcing themselves into someone's home without announcing their authority or purpose. Taylor, a 26-year-old EMT from Louisville, was killed during a police raid on her home back in March, which was conducted under the authority of a no-knock warrant. It would also require the same of any state or local law enforcement agency that receives funds from the Department of Justice."After talking with Breonna Taylor's family, I've come to the conclusion that it's long past time to get rid of no-knock warrants," said Sen. Paul in a statement. "This bill will effectively end no-knock raids in the United States."The City of Louisville has since banned the use of no-knock warrants after Taylor's death and named the new ordinance after her. The Louisville Metro Council unanimously voted Thursday night to ban the controversial warrants after days of protests and calls for reform.According to NPR, the law requires police to wear body cameras when serving warrants and turn them on five minutes before entering a person's home. Chris Hopkinson wanted to challenge himself, so he came up with a plan to paddle board the Chesapeake Bay. The whole Bay!"The physical mission was to paddle the bay; the real goal is to raise money for Oyster Recovery Partnership," he said.That goal of paddling 200 miles in 9 days was a daunting task."It's like a marathon everyday," he said.So with a goal of 20 to 30 miles a day, Hopkins took off from the Havre De Grace and headed down the bay to the Atlantic Ocean. He grew up around the bay but got a better understanding of it's beauty."When I'm coming down the Honga River and there's nobody around and there's just water and green and untouched beauty, you really get an appreciation for the beauty of the bay."Hopkinson knew this was going to be quite a physical challenge but Mother Nature decided to make it a little more interesting."Pretty high winds, 10 to 15 knots, which was creating some pretty good wave, 2 to 3 feet and then we had much cooler than normal temperatures."And that was the first day. Chris knew out of 9 days, not all were going to be good, but taking a punch in the face on the first day had him rethinking this adventure. He was motivated from those following his journey."I mean, I got hundreds of text messages and social media posts and emails from people just saying how much they were behind me and how excited they were. I think everybody really liked having a break from all the really bad news to follow something really good."So, on the 7th day he had heavy winds blowing from the side and head on and high waves and had to stop, his shortest day yet, 17 miles... 3 miles shy of goal for the day."I just couldn't take it."So, with that challenge from Mother Nature, what does he do the next day?"I took that day personally and the next day we had our best day which was 36 miles."And then just one day left, off he goes with a little encouragement from his wife, Megan.And he did get it done.
