SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- State health officials are working to catch up on a large backlog of COVID-19 tests.According to Marik Ghaly, California'sCalifornia's Health and Human Services Secretary, a server outage on July 25 led to a delay in lab records coming into the reporting system.Ghaly says they also realized they weren't getting data from one of their largest commercial labs for five days, between July 31 and August 4, because the state neglected to renew a certification."We apologize. You deserve better. The Governor demands better of us,"" Ghaly said during a Friday virtual news conference.Ghaly says there are an estimated 250,000 to 300,000 tests that need to be processed, and that will happen in the next 24 to 48 hours.The system accepts results for other reportable diseases, so the records have to sorted, Ghaly said, though adding that a majority will be COVID-19 test samples."We expect that over the next 24 to 48 hours that the backlog that's between 250 to 300 thousand cases will be resolved giving us a better sense of the number of tests that were delayed," Ghaly said. "We are reporting this data to the counties based on the date the specimen was collected so we can attribute it to the appropriate date."Ghaly points out the state froze the county monitoring list last week, so the problem should have affected any decision-making policies. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Starting this month, the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park will begin requiring ticket reservations for all guests.The two parks have avoided requiring ticket reservations since reopening as an outdoor attraction last June. SeaWorld San Diego and LEGOLAND California have reopened in more limited capacities and have required reserved tickets for guests.Starting Dec. 5, the two zoos will begin to require a reservation for guests. San Diego Zoo Global says the change will be in addition to health screenings and safety measures already implemented throughout the park."Due to COVID-19, in order to keep our community safe during this time and in anticipation of high demand, the San Diego Zoo will implement a reservation system required for entry," the zoo's website reads.Ticket reservations will be required for all visitors ages 3 and older. San Diego Zoo members will need to make a reservation to visit ahead of time as well. On its website, organizers with the American Bar Association (ABA) said the decision to cancel was made "as a result of the large number of speakers and attendees who were compelled to cancel their participation due to travel restrictions put in place by employers." The institute will not be rescheduled, according to ABA. The organization said refunds are being processed to attendees, but any travel reservations made will have to be handled individually.Leaders of the Experimental Biology conference set to take place April 4-7 canceled the massive gathering over COVID-19 as well. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- SeaWorld Wednesday released an endangered turtle rescued off the Oregon coast back into the ocean.The olive ridley sea turtle named Coral was rescued after being found stranded on an Oregon beach.SeaWorld says the 18 to 25-year-old turtle was taken to a Seattle aquarium for rehabilitation before being flown to San Diego for more treatment.Once the ocean temperature off the coast became stable around 70 degrees, Coral was released back into her ocean home about 10 miles off the San Diego coast.Experts installed a tracking device on the turtle’s shell in hopes of tracking Coral’s location as well as ocean temperature.According to SeaWorld, olive ridley turtles are found throughout the Pacific ocean, though they rarely stray any further north than Southern California. 803

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- SeaWorld San Diego’s newest ride is shut down for maintenance, according to Cal/OSHA.According to the agency, Tidal Twister was shut down June 1, roughly two weeks after its opening on May 24. The ride was shut down to address mechanical issues. Cal/OSHA says SeaWorld is working with the manufacturer to repair the ride. RELATED: SeaWorld unveils Tidal Twister thrill ride at San Diego parkOnce the ride is ready to reopen, an inspection will have to be done by Cal/OSHA to ensure it can be operated safely. The ride recently opened as SeaWorld works to complete more rides in the San Diego park.
