LANCASTER, Calif. — A 37-year-old man who was being treated for COVID-19 is accused of killing his 82-year-old hospital roommate while the elderly man was praying.Investigators with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department say the younger man, identified as Jesse Martinez, is facing charges of murder with a hate crime enhancement and elder abuse.Martinez and the 82-year-old victim were housed in a two-person room together at Antelope Valley Hospital on December 17 when the attack happened. Both were receiving treatment for COVID-19 symptoms.“The suspect became upset when the victim started to pray. He then struck the victim with an oxygen tank,” reads a statement from the sheriff’s department.The older man died from his injuries the next day. Investigators say the two men did not know each other.Martinez is scheduled to appear in court at the end of the month. 883

LAS VEGAS (KGTV) -- Friends of a San Diego pilot killed in a Las Vegas plane crash in late October said he had years of experience.Friends identified the pilot as Robert Golo.The passenger, 35-year-old Tyrone Calabar, was also killed.“It was kind of a shock to everybody. We still can’t believe it,” said fellow pilot and Golo’s friend, Flynn Ortiz. “He was so well known and so well respected.”On the morning of October 29th, the plane crashed near Raven Avenue, several miles southwest of the Las Vegas strip. Witnesses told the Clark County Fire Department they saw the plane flying low before hearing the crash.The plane was supposed to be heading back to Gillespie Field.Ortiz said he and Golo’s planes were parked next to each other at Gillespie Field. “I’ve known him for a couple years. I’ve flown with him quite a bit,” Ortiz said.Ortiz said because of his charter license, Golo was under more scrutiny and underwent more inspections. “He owned the airplane that was involved in the accident, another twin-engine airplane, and a small jet. He was very well experienced.”According to Golo’s LinkedIn page, he had operated Air Charter Express since the late 1980s.Both the NTSB and the FAA are investigating. (AP) — A Southern California man was arrested on suspicion of murder and driving drunk in the death of a motorcycle officer with the California Highway Patrol, officials said Sunday.Michael Callahan of Winchester was booked on the charges in the death of California Highway Patrol Sgt. Steve Licon, said Officer Steve Carapia.Callahan is suspected of driving drunk Saturday afternoon when he crossed over the right shoulder of Interstate 15 in Lake Elsinore, crashing into Licon and a car he had pulled over for speeding.Licon died at a nearby hospital. (KGTV) - A local company wants to fill the gap of high unemployment among the blind and visually-impaired.While the majority are college-educated, 70 percent are unemployed. San Diego-based company Aira hopes to reverse the trend. The assistive technology service is announcing a new initiative to provide free service through the Aira?Employment Program.Aira uses smart glasses equipped with a camera that streams live video to a remote, human agent. Using the video stream, GPS, and web data, agents offer live, on-demand assistance to people who are blind or visually impaired.Now job-seekers will be able to take advantage of the service for free as they look for employment. Agents will help navigate employment sites, fill out applications, build resumes, and travel to and from meetings with prospective employers. "Besides ignorance of not knowing what a blind person is capable of doing, the accommodation aspect is the other fear and Aira can help bridge a lot of that," said Juan Hernandez, an Aira Software Engineer who is totally blind. With help from the community and national partners, Aira has an ambitious goal of lowering the unemployment number from 70 percent to under 7 percent.By removing barriers, Aira hopes companies will see an opportunity, blind and visually-impaired workers ready to put their vast skills and talents to work.  1436

LAS VEGAS — President Donald Trump's campaign has sued the state of Nevada over a new bill that expands mail-in voting in the state for the 2020 general elections.Assembly Bill 4, which was signed into law on Monday during Nevada's special session, specifies that election officials will send all active registered voters a mail-in ballot if there is a statewide emergency or disaster directive.The state's Republican Party believes Nevada Gov.
