Right now there is a mystery taking place over the Southwest United States.Hundreds of thousands of birds have been found dead since the beginning of September, according to wildlife experts in New Mexico and Colorado, where some of the most have been reported.“[It’s] really strange. Literally, birds dropping out of the sky type of thing,” said Alison Holloran, the executive director Audubon Rockies. “I actually got emails from Texas and New Mexico as well, where they’re also seeing larger numbers of die-offs.”The crowdsourcing website inaturalist.org has become a spot for people to post pictures of birds they have found as a way to provide more information to biologists and wildlife experts working to figure out why this is happening. The site reports more than 1,000 incidents have been reported involving 191 different bird species.“This is a very strange event,” said Travis Duncan, a spokesman with Colorado Parks and Wildlife. “Heavy smoke from the wildfires may have played a part in creating navigation challenges for the birds.”Duncan says biologists are still performing necropsies to determine a cause, but he says all signs point to a combination of the wildfires raging across the western United States and an early-season cold front at the beginning of September that brought snow and freezing temperatures to parts of the Midwest and Southwest.Duncan says it may have caused the birds’ main food source, which is insects, to die off, forcing these birds to migrate without enough fat and weight to keep them safe once the cold front hit.“This is a web of life. You pull one little string and the whole rope is going to move,” said Holloran. 1672

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, North Carolina — A teen who shot and killed her mother's boyfriend will not be charged, authorities said. The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office said on Aug. 8, Chandra Nierman's 15-year-old daughter shot the 46-year-old male as he was attacking Nierman. Her other children, a 12-year-old son, and a 16-year-old daughter were there when the violence occurred. Sheriff's deputies said the man was threatening to "cut Nierman’s throat and kill everyone in the house."A release from authorities said:"Nierman’s twelve-year-old son retrieved a firearm and Nierman’s fifteen-year-old daughter took the gun from her brother and fired it twice, striking the deceased male in the chest. One of the fired rounds fragmented, grazing Nierman’s sixteen-year-old daughter in the leg."The 16-year-old was taken to a hospital and was released."Nierman suffered significant bruises and contusions from the assault," the release said. The investigation also revealed the deceased man had threatened Nierman several times previously, and four days before, he had assaulted Nierman and fired multiple rounds from a firearm inside the residence to threaten and terrorize her."The investigation further revealed that the deceased male, who had multiple firearms in the house and frequently carried one on his person, was a convicted felon and had two active domestic violence protection orders against him from two different women in Indiana and Ohio, although no domestic violence or assaults had been reported to law enforcement locally prior to the fatal shooting," the release said. "The deceased male has been positively identified as Steven Kelley, originally from Indiana."Based on the facts and the evidence, "it is the conclusion of the District Attorney’s Office that the shooting was justified and no charges will be filed," the release states. 1903

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Californians will vote next year whether the state should issue billion in bonds for school construction and modernization projects.Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation Monday placing the bond on the March 2020 ballot. He says improving physical conditions in schools will improve students' educational experiences.Nine billion dollars will go to facilities serving students in pre-school through 12th grade. Two billion dollars each will go to the University of California system, the California State University system and community colleges.Local governments have to provide matching funds. But the state will provide a greater share of the money for districts with high percentages of low income, foster care and English learning students.Newsom says he's confident voters will approve the bonds. 838

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A federal lawsuit was filed Tuesday after a state audit found the California DMV's "motor voter" program that started in 2018 was riddled with technical problems that led to discrepancies in voter registrations.Attorney Harmeet Dhillon, a member of the National Republican party, filed the federal lawsuit Tuesday against the state of California that accuses Secretary of State Alex Padilla of violating the National Voter Registration Act.Padilla responded in a statement saying the lawsuit "is a fundamental misrepresentation" of the act. He called the lawsuit an "underhanded attempt" at voter suppression.Dhillon filed the lawsuit on behalf of three California residents who are Republican voters. The lawsuit also names the director of California's Department of Motor Vehicles, Steve Gordon.Dhillon said that a recent audit that found a variety of problems with California DMV's "motor voter" program, which automatically registers people to vote, helped bring the issues in her lawsuit to light. 1039

SACRAMENTO  (KGTV) – Sexually transmitted diseases hit a record high in California in 2017, according to the California Department of Public Health.More than 300,000 cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and early syphilis were reported last year. The figure is 45 percent higher than five years ago.Health officials are particularly concerned by the hike because 30 women had stillbirths due to congenital syphilis, the highest number since 1995.STDs can cause serious health problems if untreated. Syphilis can cause permanent loss of hearing, vision and neurological issues. Chlamydia and gonorrhea can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility, ectopic pregnancy and chronic pelvic pain."STDs are preventable by consistently using condoms, and many STDs can be cured with antibiotics," said CDPH Director and State Public Health Officer Dr. Karen Smith. "Regular testing and treatment are very important for people who are sexually active, even for people who have no symptoms. Most people infected with an STD do not know it."Chlamydia and gonorrhea rates are highest among people under age 30, health officials said. Rates of chlamydia are highest among young women, and males account for the majority of syphilis and gonorrhea cases.  1277
