Grocery stores are preparing for more shortages and two chains have already announced limits on buying some items.Kroger is allowing customers two each of paper towels, toilet paper, disinfecting wipes and hand soap. H-E-B is putting limits on those same things, along with rubbing alcohol, and first aid and cleaning gloves.A supply chain expert tells us the upcoming holidays and a recent surge in COVID-19 cases are adding to demand.Manufacturers are focusing on the most popular products, so less variety may also make it seem like there are more shortages.Months of steady demand has made it tough for retailers to stock up.“There hasn't been really a low season across the board to allow for building up inventory that we can use during the holiday season when we expect a surge in demand,” said Rafay Ishfaq, Associate Professor of Supply Chain Management at Auburn University.Another chain, Stew Leonard's, says it's ordering 20% more stock than usual before the holidays this year. Meanwhile, it's already seen an uptick in panic buying.Customers are looking for cleaning supplies, frozen foods and comfort foods.“I think there was a little unrest over the election and there still is, and people aren't really sure if there's going to be any type of a lockdown in America,” said Stew Leonard's CEO Stew Leonard Jr.In talking to customers, Stew Leonard's says it's found more people are preparing for small Thanksgiving gatherings. So, it's stocking up on smaller turkeys and offering recipes to people who are trying a hand at cooking one for the first time.By anticipating the changes, the chain hopes to keep shelves full through the end of the year. 1670

HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii's governor says that starting Oct. 15, travelers arriving from out of state may bypass a 14-day quarantine requirement if they test negative for COVID-19.Travelers will have to take the test within 72 hours before their flight arrives in the islands.The governor, David Ige, says drug store operator CVS and healthcare provider Kaiser Permanente will conduct the tests as part of an agreement with the state.Travelers will need to be able to show proof of their negative test results from a CLIA certified laboratory. Those who can’t will be required to quarantine for two weeks or until they can provide proof of their test results.Ige said in a press release that the new pre-travel testing program “is an important step toward reviving our economy while continuing to protect public health.”Earlier this year, Hawaii had plans to start a pre-travel testing program on Aug. 1 but had to postpone them as COVID-19 cases spiked on the U.S. mainland and in Hawaii. HINTON, W.V. – Wild and wonderful, the natural beauty of West Virginia can’t be questioned.But the people who live there have seen better days. Sean Phelps sees it all the time.“Bunch of friends from high school that are in prison for drugs, or they (overdosed) from drugs or committed suicide because of drugs. It’s a lot worse here than people think,” said Phelps who lives in the state.The opioid crisis has hit West Virginia as hard as any other state in the country. Combine that with nearly 80,000 coal jobs lost since 1990 and things have been a little bleak.“I had some friends in the coal mines. When the coal mines shut down, they’re not as well off now, that is for sure. Bunch of them are struggling really bad,” he said.But things are buzzing at Appalachian Beekeeping Collective.“Bee keeping integrates everything in our environment and it’s such a heart and mind thing. Like I was saying earlier, people are rooting for honeybees. They’re worried about honeybees and we want to give them tools to really help them in a concrete way,” said Kevin Johnson with the collective.The group is cracking open honeycomb and harvesting sweet, sticky, honey.“It’s a sticky job,” said Robbie Gardisky, who works at the collective harvesting honey.Phelps used to be an EMT and janitor. Gardisky was doing landscaping. Michael Beckner worked in IT.“Not a lot of people that work a job say they love their job. Everybody that works here, loves their job,” said Phelps.They’re all on a second career of sorts. The goal of the collective is to create economic opportunities for rural families in the state. They teach people the skills and give them the materials to keep their own bees.“Our work, even though it’s focused on bees, it’s about working with people,” said Johnson.Johnson is one of the people who mentors prospective beekeepers. Passing on his knowledge is one of his favorite parts of his job.“We have a 12-year-old who is the youngest apprentice beekeeper in West Virginia. We also have an 83-year-old beekeeper. We’ve got people who live on large cattle farms, people who live on small lots in hollers. And all of those are great places for bees,” he said.The collective has taught and distributed bee boxes to hundreds of West Virginians. They also harvest the sweet nectar for their participants and pay them for it.It’s really all in an effort to help rebuild some of the people in this state the world seems to have forgotten and connect them with the amazing natural resources this state has to offer.“I think the people of West Virginia are perhaps its most underappreciated resource, but its most valuable,” said Johnson. 2650

Good Samaritans and authorities rescued a couple in their 70s whose vehicle crashed into a Long Island canal following a collision with another vehicle Monday.Police say it happened when a Ford pickup truck and a Subaru were involved in a motor vehicle crash at Venetian Promenade and Montauk Highway in Suffolk County, New York. When the Subaru backed up following the crash, police say it collided with a Mercury.The Mercury crashed through a fence and fell into a canal.Video shows the moment the car was partially submerged in the water.Five good Samaritans and two Suffolk County police officers jumped into the water to rescue the couple.Joseph Abitabile, 78, was driving the Mercury. He was rescued from the vehicle, along with his wife, Delores, 76, who was unconscious.An off-duty Lake Success police officer administered CPR, restoring the woman's pulse and breathing back to normal.The Abitabiles, one good Samaritan, the two Suffolk County officers and the driver of the Subaru were taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
