SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The countdown has begun for St. Patrick's Day in San Diego. The Gaslamp District is heavily bedazzled with sparkly green decorations. Many people said they are ready to party.Niamh Thornton is a 24 year old Irish student, now living in San Diego. “Niamh is pronounced like “Christmas Eve,” but with an “N” like “Neev”… It’s Irish,” Thornton said.She has been working at the Field Irish Pub in the Gaslamp District since last June."It's called an Irish Mule… It's lovely,” she said, pointing at a popular drink at the pub.The Irish native was getting ready for a 10-hour shift at the Field Saturday. "It's going to be crazy, I'd say,” Thornton said. Crazy may be an understatement.Saturday, many blocks downtown will be closed from sunrise to sunset-- for the morning Shamrock Run, the daytime parade, and shamROCK, the evening concert. Plus, many will be staring at the television screens, screaming for their favorite Irish teams. “England vs. Ireland in the rugby,” she said. ”And six nations. That’s insane. So this place is going to be packed.”But some people just could not wait to pre-party. Many people we saw in Downtown were showcasing their green accessories and outfits. Some were fully dressed up as lucky leprechauns. Kristin Ventura was showing off her Irish American pride with her co-workers at the Field Irish Pub. She said it is the one day of the year that anyone can be an honorary Irishman."Everyone is a little bit Irish,” Ventura said. “Deep down inside, there is that little spunk in you."Thornton said that spunk comes from St. Patrick himself, who legend said, saved the island from a slithery invasion."He got rid of snakes in Ireland,” Thornton said. “So that's why there are no snakes in Ireland."That was the start of the St. Patrick’s Day celebration for everyone — even for those on the other side of the planet. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Ten people were arrested in a suspected smuggling incident after border officials stopped a boat off the coast of Coronado this week.U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine agents say a boat was spotted just west of Coronado at about 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Agents said the vessel was traveling from Mexican waters into U.S. territory.A crew was sent out to stop the suspected smuggling boat and 10 people were found aboard. The boat had been traveling without lights on and was spray painted black, according to agents.The individuals on the boat, all male Mexican citizens ages 18 to 55, were taken back to shore and turned over to Border Patrol, CBP said."It’s dangerous to travel on a crowded boat, out at sea, with no lights, and these smugglers took the added step of spray-painting the hull black so they would be difficult to spot at night," said Christopher Hunter, Deputy Director of Marine Operations for CBP in San Diego. "Smuggling organizations aren’t considering anyone’s safety when these make these illegal attempts, only what profits they can try to make."The 10 men were due to be returned to Mexico, CBP said. 1166

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The community is rallying around a North Park Church that provides shelter for homeless youth, Lead Pastor Brandan Robertson said Thursday night at their prayer vigil.The Missiongathering Christian Church was slapped with 29 violations from the City, and told it needed to re-zone to accommodate their music venue, "The Irenic". They were also told to shut down their homeless youth shelter that provides a hot meal and place to sleep Tuesday nights, unless they purchase a conditional use permit."...because the Code says churches can only host shelters 30 times a year without a permit, and we host our shelter 50. A CUP could cost an upwards of ,000 just to cover the 20 extra nights per year that we provide a safe space for homeless youth," the Gofundme raising money for the church stated.The church quickly remedied 7 of the violations, "new fire extinguishers, we put in fire and smoke and CO2 detectors in the area where the youth sleep. We've gone around and fixed panels that are down, put in new exit signs, posted the occupancy in all the rooms," Robertson said.Robertson said they didn't know they were in violation and the fire department completes an inspection every year.Robertson said their concerts pay the mortgage. The church has lived at the corner of Polk Ave. and Illinois St. for 10 years. The concerts end by 10 p.m. to keep in accordance with city noise restrictions, a supporter added.Robertson said the trouble started when a neighbor complained about the noise and the shelter. Robertson said police came to the church multiple times, even on Easter Sunday and one morning, in the end of July, Robertson said eight City inspectors showed up. He said he got a message in the mail August 31st to shut down.The Gofundme raised more than ,000 in two days to help with legal fees. Robertson said they have hundreds of signatures on a petition and community members filled Councilman Chris Ward's voicemail.Dozens showed up to the church's prayer vigil Thursday, praying, singing and donating to the cause."The city hasn't been doing what they need to do, the church is leading in that area and we need to support them on every end," Aeiramique Glass Blake, Executive Director of Generation Justice said.Robertson said he was saved by the church when he was 12, "[I] grew up in an abusive alcoholic family in Maryland... went to this Baptist church and discovered a god who was a better parent than mine was." He said it's heartbreaking they can't help kids in similar situations.Blake said the community will show up to protect the church if they wish to keep their doors open next Tuesday night.Robertson said the city is working to find another place for the youth.Robertson said other groups are already planning benefits for Missiongathering and says he is touched by the outpouring of support. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Imperial Beach Charter School PTA president was arrested on suspicion of embezzling funds from the group, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Financial Crimes Unit said Wednesday. A warrant was issued in November for 30-year-old Kaitlyn Birchman, a mother of two. Riverside County deputies arrested Birchman late Tuesday night at her home in Temecula.Birchman was the head of the Imperial Beach Charter School's parent-teacher association until March, when she was voted off the board. Other members said her departure followed months of missing funds. RELATED: South Bay mom accused of stealing thousands of dollars from her children’s school“There were thousands of dollars that hadn’t been paid,” current PTA treasurer and former Coronado Police sergeant Elizabeth McKay said. According to McKay, vendors from previous years sent the PTA bills for unpaid services. McKay contacted the bank and discovered the PTA’s account no longer existed. “The checks...she had written to herself and signed herself. ATM withdrawals that weren't anywhere near Imperial Beach or had anything to do with a PTA event." The PTA confronted Birchman in March with the help of a Sheriff’s deputy, who spoke about embezzlement. "She [Birchman] said that it was just a misunderstanding,” McKay said. “It was a lot of blind faith that they thought if she says everything is okay, then everything must be okay." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Surveillance video shows burglars ransacking a Pacific Beach brewpub hit hard by the pandemic.Just past 6 p.m Thursday, while food and craft beer were being served up at the second-story Amplified Ale Works restaurant, a masked man was recorded while inside the first-floor office and shuttered music venue.A mangled door revealed the intruder's entry point."Looks like he used a crowbar on the back door," said owner Alex Pierson.Inside, he's seen rummaging through drawers, grabbing headphones and some other items before leaving. Pierson says the burglar returned hours later, and he wasn't alone."When they came back at 10:30 p.m., they ransacked everything," said Pierson.For some 40 minutes, three men are seen helping themselves to whatever they wanted, filling up box after box.In one clip, one of the thieves is seen sorting through paperwork. Several blank checks were found missing."It's that feeling of violation. It hurt. Also took several employees' bikes, several guitars, amps, eight cases of beer, merchandise and some other electronics," said Pierson.For Pierson, the burglary is beyond disheartening."We're doing everything we can to keep our employees employed ... a 'being kicked while you're down' feeling," said Pierson.Pierson says the impact of the pandemic has cut revenues for the eight-year-old brewpub in half. The loss from the theft is more than ,000."In the end, it's not going to break us, but we're at such a point of breaking, as it is," said Pierson.Pierson fears others have also felt the hurt.
