(KGTV) — City crews have started emergency repairs to an unstable cave located underneath a busy La Jolla street.Coast Blvd. was closed late Thursday after experts found weaknesses in Cook's Crack, a sea cave underneath Coast Blvd. near Cave St."We're starting to see above ... the looser, weaker material. That's a trigger right off the bat that, 'Oh my God, we don't have the beefy rock bridging across anymore. So that's what got out attention," said James Nagelvoort, city public works director.RELATED: La Jolla streets closed for emergency stabilization of Cook's Crack caveThe discovery came as crews prepared to repair Coast Blvd. Assessors discovered that if too much weight is above the cave or heavy seismic vibrations hit the area, the road could collapse, according to the city.A crew from Texas was called to lead the project, driving overnight to La Jolla Friday.Crews plan to first fill the cave's cracks with an eco-friendly polyurethane mix to strengthen the dirt. The next phase will be to clear out all of the water and fill the cave with a concrete mix.Construction is expected to last about six weeks, closing parts of Coast Blvd. and Cave St.Cook's Crack is located in the area between La Jolla Cove and the popular Cave Store. The strip of road leads down to seaside restaurants and parking for many tourists and residents.The project required the city to quickly close the road before locals realized what the issue was, though businesses and residents were allowed to pass through the area Friday."They said there's been some shift in the road itself," David Heine, owner of nearby Brockton Villa Restaurant, told 10News. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A boater who had been missing since Friday was rescued about 86 miles off the coast of Florida on Sunday.The U.S. Coast Guard says 62-year-old Stuart Bee was found alive on the bow of his 32-foot Sea Ray, which had capsized.Bee departed Cape Marina in Port Canaveral on Friday and didn’t return, according to the Coast Guard.Watchstanders in Jacksonville learned of the disappearance Saturday morning and were told Bee wouldn’t typically stay out on his boat overnight.An aircrew was dispatched the area and other boaters were advised to be on the lookout for Bee’s vessel.Luckily, the Coast Guard says Bee was spotted clinging to his boat at about 11 a.m. Sunday and was then transported to shore."Saving lives at sea is our highest calling. It may seem like an open and shut case, but officials say a confession may not be enough.Joseph and Krystal Daniels were charged in the case of their autistic, 5-year-old son who went missing. Joseph confessed to beating his son to death. He was charged with homicide and Krystal was later arrested and charged with aggravated child neglect or endangerment.Crews in Dickson County, Tennessee vowed they wouldn't stop searching until the young boy was brought home and laid to rest.A legal battle is looming especially since Joe Clyde Daniel's body still has not been found. It is a simple question sure to be asked by the public defender: without a body can prosecutors even prove that Joe Clyde Daniels is dead?Yes, it's true his father Joseph Daniels is said to have confessed to beating the child to death, but without actually having a body it's not a done deal."Certainly it's a more difficult case if they have nothing to back up the confession," said attorney Jim Todd, who's closely followed the case.He said there certainly could be other evidence, perhaps blood from the scene, cadaver dogs hitting on a scent or even witness testimony potentially from the child's mother."There's a good chance, and this is a guess, the wife is charged as a leverage point on her to get her to roll," said Todd.But then there's this: Daniel's father says he believes prosecutors coerced the confession out of his son.  What happens if he recants his statement and insists he is innocent?"The jury will hear the statement and determine on their own if he was coerced or gave this confession or not," said Todd.That situation would only occur if the case goes to trial, and a trial is a long way off. Next up, a preliminary hearing for both parents on June 1.That's when prosecutors will lay out much of their case. KAKE, Alaska. – A rare white killer whale was recently spotted off the southeast coast of Alaska.The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) says people on an 80-foot charter boat witnessed the “less-than-once-in-a-lifetime” event on Aug. 7, just offshore of the village of Kake.UAF graduate student Stephanie Hayes was working as first mate of the boat and was among the lucky few who spotted “glowing” orca in a pod of killer whales.The rest of the whales in the pod, about three or four others, were the typical dairy-cow black-and-white colors, according to UAF.Hayes recognized how rare the sighting was, because she had studied killer whales during her undergraduate work in British Columbia.“There have only been about eight white killer whales ever recorded in the world,” Hayes told UAF. “To have one in Southeast was an incredible phenomenon.”Hayes told UAF that the white killer whale has a condition called leucism, which she defined as a “lack of vibrancy” in its pigmentation.“Caused by a mutation in the whale’s DNA, leucism is different from albinism, in which a creature is all white, with pink eyes,” wrote UAF in a press release.Turns out, the whale had been spotted before by researchers and named Tl’uk, a word for moon in the language of the Salish peoples of the Pacific Northwest.When Tl’uk leaves its pod, Hayes says its glow might be a disadvantage, perhaps alerting its prey of its approach. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A woman is recovering after being shot in the leg by a man she’d been out with Wednesday night.She was shot on the Plaza, but the Kansas City Police Department said the incident began in another part of town. They said a man and the victim were in his car when he started firing his gun from the car.The woman got out and ran to her car, which was parked on the Plaza.Police said the man drove by and shot her through her car door.She was taken to the hospital. The gunman left the scene and went to his home in Lee’s Summit, where local police arrested him and took him to the KCPD jail.KPCD said it’s unclear why the suspect began shooting in the first place.The woman was shot right outside The Granfalloon. 752
