SCOTTSDALE, Arizona — From pre-made salads and sandwiches to ready-to-make meal kits and online ordering, the grocery store has become a conveyor belt of innovation the last few years.It’s time to throw another piece into the basket — driverless delivery. Kroger, the Cincinnati, Ohio-based grocery chain that operates Fry’s Food Stores, announced Thursday, Aug. 16, that it will begin testing its driverless delivery program in Scottsdale, Arizona. In June, the company said it was exploring the program and had partnered with Nuro, a company founded in 2016 that makes unmanned vehicles, but had not named where they would be tested.Now we know where.Starting Thursday, the program will only be available to those living in the 85257 zip code and within two miles of the Fry’s grocery store at 7770 E. McDowell Road in Scottsdale (near Scottsdale and North Hayden Roads).Here are a few things you need to know:WHAT IS IT?Forget going to the grocery store and walking the aisles to grab the milk, eggs and cheese. Under the test program, customers will be able to order their groceries via the Fry's Food Store app and website and have them delivered to their home by one of Nuro’s ten unmanned Toyota Prius vehicles.Each vehicle will deliver the groceries to a home’s curbside and can deliver up to 15 bags of groceries, said Pam Giannonatti, corporate affairs manager with Kroger.HOW SAFE IS IT?“Safety is Nuro’s top priority. They are relentlessly focused on ensuring their vehicles are not just good neighbors, but among the safest on the road,” Kroger said in a statement. “Their vehicles and the autonomy systems undergo extensive testing including a wide range of critical safety scenarios that require immediate response to prevent harm.”During the test, Kroger said each vehicle would have a safety test driver with it.HOW DOES IT WORK?Starting Thursday, Aug. 16, those living within the 85257 zip code can order groceries from the Fry’s Food app or website, https://www.frysfood.com.They can be delivered by one of Nuro’s vehicles that same day or the next day depending on availability.The delivery fee is .95 per order. (KGTV) - Customs and Border Protection officials tweeted thermal camera video Friday of men climbing the U.S.-Mexico border fence and damaging the concertina wire.The video was recorded by U.S. Border Patrol cameras placed near Border Field State Park in Imperial Beach, opposite from where migrants have been gathering as more members of the Central American caravan arrive in Tijuana.There was no word on whether the incident captured on video led to an arrest.“All seeking to enter the U.S. are urged to do so at one of more than 320 official U.S. Ports of Entry,” Customs and Border Protection officials wrote in the tweet.  665

SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) - An abandoned church in San Ysidro will become the site of 10 new affordable housing units, as well as a cultural center.The non-profit group Casa Familiar is spearheading the project, called "Living Rooms at the Border.""What we want to do is build a culture corridor from SY Blvd through the alley, all the way to the Beyer Trolley Station," says Community Development Director David Flores.The church was built in 1927 and is known in the neighborhood as "El Salon." Casa Familiar bought the property in 2000 and has worked to develop it since then.The proposed 14,000 square foot development will turn it into a cultural arts center. Around it, Casa Familiar will build 10 units of affordable housing, a community garden and patio, office space for support services and programs, and walkways connecting the alleys to main streets.Flores says it will connect the community to its past and future."There's history. There's richness. There are stories that families love sharing about San Ysidro and growing up here. It's going to be a space that will bring back a lot of those memories."As part of the plan, the exterior of the church will stay in place. So will much of the filaments inside."People would tell us stories about coming here for Sunday services, or doing their first communion, even weddings, people get married here," says Flores. "It's a really special, cool place, where we thought, why demolish everything. This is a really important community icon that we can restore."The project is the latest effort to revitalize the neighborhood. A new park and playground are just a half block away from the church, and plans are underway to build a new San Ysidro library two blocks away.The new homes will vary in size. There will be three one-bedroom units, three two-bedroom units and four three-bedroom units."This is not a lot of units, it's 10 units," says Flores. "But the whole idea behind this project is to build in the service, support programs that families need.""Living Rooms at the Border" will cost around 8.25 million dollars and includes improvements to the surrounding infrastructure.Casa Familiar says they got a 0,000 seed grant from Art Place America. They were able to pair that with a 2-for-1 matching grant from the PARC Foundation. That gave Casa Familiar more than a million dollars to begin the project. (AP) — Southern California authorities say 18 pounds (8 kilograms) of fentanyl have been seized in Orange County — enough of the synthetic opioid to create four million lethal doses.The Orange County Register reports the seizure last week yielded almost half the amount of fentanyl seized by authorities in the county during all of 2018 — a sign the drug is quickly growing into a substantial public threat.Sheriff's officials say investigators served a search warrant and arrested 60-year-old Rudolph Garcia on multiple drug charges. It wasn't known if Garcia has an attorney.Investigators also seized a semi-automatic handgun, heroin, methamphetamine, and ,000 in cash.According to the California Department of Public Health, deaths in Orange County attributed to fentanyl have risen from 14 five years ago to 93 in 2018. 852
