SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A year-long construction project to improve State Route 163 hit a milestone Tuesday morning with the completion of work on Friars and Frazee Roads.Crews arrived early in the morning, finishing up last minute preps before the big reveal. One noticeably new addition are signal lights put in place to help regulate the flow of traffic.The city also made improvements, like adding lanes on Friars Road. There are four lanes going east and four lanes going west. Changes to the on and off ramps from the 163 onto Friars Road may reduce the confusion and congestion caused by the old traffic pattern. Crews also added sidewalks and clearly-marked bike lanes. “We can separate and have a path for all modes of traffic including foot and bike traffic. So, it will be safer for everyone using Friars Road. It’s a safer facility now that we made these improvements," said a Caltrans spokesperson.The “Open for Business,” ceremony took place at 10 a.m. 969

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- After losing her husband and her son to a rare form of cancer, a local mom is doing her part to bring awareness to the disease. She teamed up with her family’s medical care team to come up with a step challenge.“I’m a mother on a mission to find and fund a cure for this disease,” says Debra Melikian.She lost her son Merak in February. He was diagnosed with a rare form of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor, also known as GIST.“He was so strong, he was so brave and determined to live life on his own terms,” says Melikian. “Merak never let cancer define him.”Melikian says the cancer is hereditary. She lost her husband to the cancer months prior.“I have lost my entire immediate family in a mere two-plus years. I do not want any other family to have to go through the despair and destruction that this cancer brings.”When not tending to patients, the care team at UCSD, who treated Merak and his father, would often participate in fun challenges, like Tough Mudder. Nurse Maura Caffrey says after Merak’s death, they wanted to do something to honor him and bring awareness to GIST.The team came up with a step challenge.“Whether you do Zumba, yoga, or hiking, you can do any type of activity,” says Caffrey. “It’s sort of a movement challenge. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An off-ramp drivers have used for decades to exit the northbound state Route 163 onto Friars Road is gone for good.On Wednesday, Caltrans permanently closed the off-ramp that leads from northbound SR-163 to eastbound Friars Road. The exit provides direct access onto eastbound Friars Road, with a straight shot to SDCCU stadium and the thousands of homes being built that direction. It also gets drivers away from the traffic heading toward the Fashion Valley Mall. 493

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An arrest has been made in the death of a teenager found dead in a Rancho Bernardo street last March.San Diego Police say Angel Ramirez, 19, of Escondido, was arrested Wednesday in connection with the death of a 16-year-old male on March 7, 2019.The teenage victim was found just before midnight lying in the middle of the street in the 16800 block of Cresta Dr. Police said despite life-saving efforts, the teen died at the scene. Based on the evidence collected, it appeared the teen had died as a result of a traffic accident.RELATED: Man found dead in middle of Rancho Bernardo streetThe Medical Examiner's officer, however, ruled the teen's death as a homicide and not caused by a traffic incident. Police didn't elaborate on the cause of death.Investigators say their case led to the identification of Ramirez, who was arrested and charged with first degree murder. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After a year of saving, an 11-year-old San Carlos girl is finally spending all her money -- on other kids.During last year's holiday season, even before Sienna Ince opened her gifts, a question popped into her mind."Why do I get so many gifts when there are others who don't get any, and their parents just have to pay bills," said Sienna.So Sienna decided to use her birthday money and money from chores, and bought worth of gifts, with many of them going to Toys For Tots."She loaded everything onto the conveyor built at the checkout stand and paid for it ... It made me very proud of her. Love to take credit it, but it was all her," said Sienna's mother, Nichel Ince.This year, amid the pandemic, Sienna decided to step up her game. Her parents' jobs have been impacted, but not as much as for many others."I know that other people can't get gifts because parents are losing their jobs in this hard time. They can't get a lot of things. I just want to make sure everyone during this time can get gifts," said Sienna.Sienna set up lemonade stands and cooked up bake sales, and set aside the money she received from her birthday and chores. In the end, she saved about 0. Her father then made an appeal on the Nextdoor app for families, and kids in need -- of something under the tree."I want them to feel happy knowing that they're going to get gifts, and they're going to wake up and be happy with their gifts," said Sienna.Sienna has finished her shopping, which included more than 20 gifts. She just started with the wrapping, and she's issuing a challenge to kids who aren't in need."Maybe you can ask your parents to not give you one of your gifts on your list, and give something to other people ... I just want other people to see this and think that you can also make a difference," said Sienna.Sienna's parents have agreed to help her if more families come forward in need of gifts.
