Each day since November 1, a group called Warriors Journey Home shows up at Veterans Memorial Park in Green, Ohio, offers a brief prayer and then turns their attention to a metal tree that measures less than five feet tall. They quietly hang 22 dog tags on the Witness Tree to represent the 22 veterans who die from suicide each day in the U.S. The final 22 tags will be placed on the tree on Veterans Day."We're going to have 242 dog tags on this tree. Those are 242 lives that didn't have to end this way and we can do something about it," said John Schluep, an Army veteran who runs the local chapter of Warriors Journey Home.Keith Van Buskirk, a veteran of the Marine Corps Reserve, said seeing all of the dog tags is emotional for him."It definitely provokes an emotional response in me. It makes me wish I could shake the hand or hug every one of those war fighters on that tree," Van Buskirk said. Both Schluep and Van Buskirk said they knew veterans who committed suicide."I was called yesterday about a young man who had taken his life, a Marine veteran from Iraq," Schluep said. The non-profit has a mission to provide spiritual healing and soul repair from the invisible wounds for veterans, families and the community.Schluep said there are many reasons for suicides among veterans, including a struggle to find wellness when adjusting from military culture back to civilian life."Loneliness, abandonment, isolation, lack of fitting into that community," Schluep said. Those in the community who support Warriors Journey Home are known as "strong hearts." Their role is considered crucial because they help share some of the burdens that veterans face."Part of that is opening our hearts to listen, to share that responsibility. That's what I want people to think about. We can do a better job," Schluep told WEWS.The group urges veterans, who may be struggling, to reach out to their organization, based in Cuyahoga Falls, by calling 330-715-5683 or contacting Veterans Affairs.Van Buskirk stressed many of us can do our part by doing something simple to help veterans."If you know somebody that served in the military, it's just an awareness thing about picking up the phone and calling to check in on them," he said. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is a national network of local crisis centers that provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Call 1-800-273-8255 if you are experiencing thoughts of suicide or mental distress. This story was originally published by Bob Jones at WEWS. 2602

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - Over the course of the Pandemic, sisters Berlin and Bristol Dixon kept their favorite extra-curricular activity going strong. The two created "East County Kids News" as a way to keep doing school news, even while school was canceled. When in-person learning resumed in the fall, the girls went their separate ways, with Berlin going to Los Coches Creek Middle School and Bristol at WD Hall Elementary. But they took what they learned from EC Kids News and used it to make their school newscasts better."I feel like we have a lot more resources," says Berlin. "We learned how to work with computers a lot more ever break. So, when we returned, we knew a lot more about iMovie and all the stuff you need to know for broadcast."But, beyond the technical improvements they brought back to campus, the girls say they learned how important their work had been to keep the community together."I have learned that kids are resilient and they can go above and beyond," says Bristol. "And that when you want something you can go for it.""It's really taught us how amazing our community is," says Berlin. "Also that it's really important to stay connected with everyone, because it has been a rough time but when we connect it makes that rough time not as hard."Their efforts have impressed teachers at both schools."For them to find the silver lining in the cloud is is inspiring to to everyone," says Laura Albright, a teacher at WD Hall. "You always set your expectation high for your students, but they totally surpassed anything we could think of."The only downside to returning to campus is losing the chance to co-anchor as sisters. But Berlin and Bristol say they may do some special reports for EC Kids News over the holiday break to work together again. 1785

Due to a coin shortage at the Federal Reserve, Kroger will no longer return coin change to customers. Instead, the remainders from cash transactions can either be donated to charity or applied to the customers' loyalty cards to be used on the next purchase. The change in giving change also applies to subsidiaries of Kroger, including Ralphs, Food 4 Less, King Soopers, Smith's and more. Kroger officials said, "at Kroger, we are implementing several creative solutions to minimize the impact to our customers. We know this is an inconvenience for our customers and we appreciate their patience. The Treasury Department expects the shortage to diminish as more regions of the country reopen."Customers have the following options if coins are not available:Round up to support Zero Hunger, Zero Waste FoundationPay with a form of payment other than cashHave their coin change loaded as credit toward their next purchase directly to their loyalty cardCustomers using self-checkout will still be able to receive coins. There are multiple reasons leading to the current coin shortage. The U.S. Mint has slowed production to keep employees safe from the coronavirus. With stay-at-home orders and business shut-downs, fewer people are spending coins at stores, laundromats, vending machines and other places. Walmart and CVS locations have also made changes to encourage customers to use exact change or plastic to pay for their items when possible. The Federal Reserve rationed coins in June and gathered a task force to look into the shortage to come up with possible solutions. This story was originally published by Rebekah Pewitt at WTVF. 1644
