(KGTV) - A Jamul family is mourning the loss from COVID-19 of a former little league coach and employee at Taylor Guitars.Greg Denny came down with a sinus headache in the second week of June. A trip to the ER revealed double pneumonia. Then came a positive COVID-19 test and fever, before his wife Kim brought him back to the hospital.“Five days of fever, hadn't been able to break it. He was at 102°,” said Kim Denny.A week after Greg was admitted, he was placed on a ventilator.“It was very emotional, like a roller coaster. Good one day and then things changed that same day,” she said.Eventually, the bad days took over. His kidneys failed. So did his pancreas. Then he got a blood infection. Last Friday, Greg — an Army veteran, father of two and grandfather of four — passed away at the age of 48.“He was my soulmate, my best friend and now he's my guardian angel,” she said.Kim calls her husband a wonderful dad and grandfather.“He’s the best man I’ve ever known,” said Dillon Wulff, Greg’s adult son.For the last five years, Greg has worked in security at Taylor Guitars. For more than two decades, he has coached or volunteered for little league games in Spring Valley.In her time of grief, Kim takes comfort in the daily game they played called, "I love you more."“Whoever said it first would win. So constantly, he'd get up and say, ‘I love you more.’ I'd get up and say, ‘I love you more,’" said Kim.They would play that game until the day he went on the ventilator.As for where the origin of the COVID-19, she has no idea. He always wore masks.“My husband was very safe … So, it’s scary. People need to take every precaution that they can,” said Kim.Greg did have an underlying condition: high blood pressure. KILLEEN, Texas – It’s been nearly two months since a Fort Hood soldier went missing and now the reward for information about the 20-year-old’s disappearance has been doubled to ,000.Private First Class Vanessa Guillen was last seen on April 22 between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in the parking lot of her Regimental Engineer Squadron Headquarters at the U.S. Army base in Killeen, Texas, according to a press release from the Army Criminal Investigation Command (CID).She hasn’t been seen or heard from since.The Army says Guillen’s car and room key, identification car, and wallet were later found in the armory room where she was working earlier in the day.Officials say Guillen was last seen wearing a black t-shirt and purple fitness-type pants. She’s described as being 5 feet 2 inches tall, about 126 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.Investigators say they have no credible information or report at this time that Guillen was sexually assaulted or that the case is in any way connected to the disappearance of Private Second Class Gregory Wedel-Morales, who was last seen on Aug. 19, 2019 while driving his car in Killeen. Both allegations have been circulated online.More than 150 people have been interviewed in the investigation and the Army says its working closely with multiple law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, to help bring Guillen home.The Army and Fort Hood are still seeking the public’s help to solve the case. La Jolla, CA- (KGTV) San Diego researchers are looking for people who have recovered from COVID-19 who are willing to donate their blood to be screened for antibodies. Dennis Burton, PhD, is one of the world's leading experts on antibodies. Burton is the chair of the Department of Immunology and Microbiology at Scripps Research. His primary focus was developing vaccines for HIV and other infectious diseases, but now his priority is on the novel coronavirus. "What we are looking for is for folks who have diagnosed COVID-19 and have recovered. And preferably, we would like individuals who have recovered some time ago. So, ideally even a month, or two months since they had the illness. That gives time for the antibodies to the virus to have matured and become really good. We're after finding really good antibodies," said Burton. According to Burton, finding patients can be challenging because so many may not realize they were infected." We've heard from quite a few people, mostly, though, they were not actually diagnosed. They may well have had COVID-19, but we're not sure," said Burton. Once they get confirmed patients, the research involves two critical steps."One is we clone the antibodies, and test them, first of all, in test tubes basically and see how well, they do against the virus. Then, later we may try them in some model systems. So, that's what we would do, first of all, and if we can find really good antibodies, then it would be up to pharmaceutical companies to make them in large quantities for use in a therapeutic activity that's the first thing," said Burton. The next step involves using the antibodies to make a vaccine."That's a much, much longer process, but it's one that could be important," said Burton. Burton said there's still a lot to learn."There's also challenges in not knowing the behavior of the virus. We're very careful cause we don't really know too much about it. It's only emerged 3 or 4 months ago," said Burton. Scientists estimate a vaccine could still be at least a year away. In the meantime, Burton said people need to be careful."All of these treatments are a ways down the road, the best thing at the moment, is to avoid getting infected as much as you can, so really be very cautious," said Burton. 2279

(KGTV) - Wineries in the East County call themselves "hidden gems," offering San Diegans a chance to get away without having to travel as far as Temecula and other more well known wine producing areas.Granite Lion Cellars in Jamul grows 17 varietals. As they shift operations outside their tasting room, they are taking advantage of being in a wilderness area with a waterfall, trails to explore and picnic tables in the shade.They are family and dog friendly, and have contracted with a number of food trucks to offer food on site, as well as outdoor tastings in a more intimate setting.Miriam Valdez, Granite Lion Cellars' tasting room manager, said, "We are used to telling people about our wines, now we actually have to limit contact." While also struggling to sell more wine, Valdez added, "We are right now maybe 60-70 days out from harvest, and our warehouse is full, so the wine has to go somewhere."Sommelier David Whited said they're offering specials on cases of wine and wine club memberships, in an effort to move inventory.They're also breaking ground on a brand new barrel cave and tasting room in the hope that one day they'll be able to move back indoors.Granite Lion has retained and retrained their staff in order to stay in compliance with all of the sanitation and safety rules.They've also donated wine to the community -- to be turned into hand sanitizer. At one point, when a batch of wine didn't turn out as expected, Whited says five pallets were donated to the Mike Curfey Distillery to be turned into sanitizer for the San Diego Food Bank and first responders. Kyle Brown is crediting his pitbull Petey with saving his and his family’s lives after a gunman barricaded himself inside him Romulus home on Friday.Michigan State Police said that the incident began as a botched carjacking a couple of blocks from Brown’s home.The suspect took off through the neighborhood, jumping Brown’s fence. “As soon as I made eye to eye contact with him, I could tell by the look in his eyes and by his intent, he knew what he was doing, and it was an opportunity,” Brown said.Petey charged after the suspect. “When the pit bull came out and encountered him he immediately pulled his gun out and shot him,” Brown said. Even with a bullet wound, Petey was still able to chase the suspect out of the yard.Police say they exchanged gunfire with the suspect as he jumped the fence, hitting the suspect twice. The suspect then jumped back into Brown’s yard and went inside his home.Brown’s son and his friend were inside, and Brown tried to get them all out safely. “When he got to the door he pulled for his gun, and I’m communicating with Tommy, ‘Cmon Cmon Tommy. Hurry up.’ Unfortunately, Tommy just froze up,”  Brown said.The suspect barricaded himself inside the home with Brown’s son’s 7-year-old friend, Tommy.Tommy was released unharmed hours later.The suspect gave himself up to MSP. Tommy, Brown and his son are physically OK.Petey had to be put down because his injuries were so severe. “Petey didn’t make it, but you can’t be upset with him. He not only saved my life but he saved our lives,” Brown said. MSP has not released the suspect's name or the charges he is facing. 1657
