SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Four men allegedly bringing several dozen pounds of drugs through the coastal North County were arrested today following a road chase from Solana Beach to Carlsbad, authorities said.The pursuit began about 10:30 a.m., when detectives tried to pull over a vehicle with five people in it on Interstate 5 near Lomas Santa Fe Drive, according to sheriff's officials.The driver refused to yield, continuing on to the north for about four miles before exiting onto Encinitas Boulevard, Sgt. Bill Kerr said.There, one of the passengers, 24-year-old Gabriel Albert Delosreyes, got out of the vehicle and allegedly made a futile attempt to escape on foot.As deputies chased down Delosreyes, the fleeing driver -- later identified as Juan Manuel Villalobos, 28 -- got back onto I-5 and went north for several more miles, then exited at La Costa Avenue and headed east along the southern shoreline of Batiquitos Lagoon, Kerr said.Reaching a residential area off Levante Street and Caminito Monarca, just east of El Camino Real, Villalobos pulled over, jumped out of the vehicle and ran off with his remaining companions.One of the four, an unidentified woman, managed to escape, but deputies quickly captured Villalobos along with cohorts Marcos Martinez, 34, and 26-year-old Eddie Anthony Navarro.Inside the trunk of the car Villalobos had been driving, deputies found a truck tire with 25 1/2 pounds of methamphetamine stashed inside it, according to Kerr."Small amounts of other drugs were also found on the suspects,'' the sergeant said.The arrestees were expected to face various criminal charges, including possession of an illicit narcotic for sale, illegal transportation of a controlled substance and conspiracy. 1736

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A North Carolina man who raped and murdered a 79- year-old woman in her Normal Heights home more than three decades ago was sentenced Friday to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Kevin Thomas Ford, 63, was convicted by a San Diego jury last month for the May 20, 1987, murder of Grace Hayden, who was strangled and smothered during the rape, according to Deputy District Attorney Valerie Summers. The prosecutor said Ford worked as a driver for older medical patients in San Diego and had driven Hayden two days before her body was found on the floor of her bedroom. DNA on the victim's body, as well as a fingerprint found on her stovetop led to Ford's 2018 arrest in North Carolina. Jurors deliberated for about five hours before convicting Ford of murder and special circumstance allegations of murder in the commission of rape and murder in the commission of a burglary. At Friday's sentencing, Ford addressed the court, saying he sympathized with Hayden and her family and couldn't imagine if something similar had befallen his mother or grandmother. ``I can't imagine what it's like, having to go through what Grace Hayden went through. It must have been a night of sheer terror,'' Ford said. “But the police got the wrong man. Whoever did this is either dead or still running around free. I didn't do it. God knows I didn't do it.'' Hanoian expressed his disappointment with Ford's denial of the crime, calling the killing ``despicable'' and ``heinous,'' prior to imposing the life without parole sentence. ``You have to be the most unlucky person on the planet, maybe the most unlucky person who has ever lived on this planet, to have supposedly engaged in consensual sexual intercourse with a 79-year-old invalid woman, left your biological material in her, and then within -- 12 hours? -- that woman is found dead as the result of a rape murder that you didn't do?'' SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An ex-con pleaded not guilty to a murder charge today for allegedly stabbing another man in an apparently random attack in a public restroom along the Pacific Beach boardwalk, 16 days after being released from prison.Martin Alvarez, 33, is accused in the Aug. 16 slaying of 39-year-old Michael Wagley, who was found mortally wounded at about 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 16 in the lavatory at 700 Grand Avenue. The victim was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.Witnesses reported seeing a man fleeing on a bicycle following the stabbing, San Diego Police Department Lt. Andra Brown said.The lieutenant said Alvarez, who matched the suspect description, was detained in the area and later arrested on suspicion of murder.The alleged motive for the slaying was unclear, but a prosecutor said the victim had no connection to his attacker.Deputy District Attorney George Modlin called the stabbing a ``random act of murder'' in which Alvarez allegedly attacked the victim from behind, stabbing him in the neck.
