BEIJING, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- China will work with France to expand bilateral cooperation and advance economic and trade links, said China's top legislator Wu Bangguo Wednesday.Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), made the remarks in a meeting in Beijing with a delegation of the France-China friendship group of French parliament.Wu said the promotion of ties between China and France, both influential nations, accorded with the fundamental interests of the two peoples and would help world peace and development.China valued relations with France, and would work to strengthen mutual political trust and promote bilateral economic cooperation with a view to keeping China-France ties at the forefront of ties between China and Western nations, Wu said.8 The NPC, China's legislative body, would expand exchanges and cooperation with the French parliament to help push forward state-to-state relations, he said.The French delegation, led by chairman of the friendship group Michel Herbillon and Senate Chairman Jean Besson, are visiting China at the invitation of the NPC.They said they would contribute to relations between the two parliaments and the two nations.

NANNING, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Six people were killed and eleven others injured in an explosion at an illegal private firecracker factory in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, local police said Sunday.The blast hit the factory in a village in Lingshan County, Qinzhou City at about 6 p.m. Sunday, the police said. The cause of the explosion is being investigated.Two people were killed on the spot while four injured died in the hospital after treatments failed.Police said they have arrested a suspect surnamed Lao.Authorities have ordered a city-wide crackdown on unlicensed firecracker factories following the incident.

BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) -- Rainstorms and consequent floods have left 107 people dead and 59 missing in ten provinces and municipalities -- mostly along the Yangtze River as of Tuesday afternoon, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.Latest figures from the ministry show that, as of 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, rain-triggered floods had affected some 29 million people and 997,000 had been evacuated.Further, the direct economic loss had reached 19.75 billion yuan (2.89 billion U.S. dollars). YICHANG, Hubei, July 28 (Xinhua) -- China's Three Gorges Dam on the swollen Yangtze River is experiencing another test as flood flows peaking at 56, 000 cubic meters per second, the greatest peak flood of the year, arrived at the dam at 8 a.m. Wednesday, engineers said.The dam buffered the flood by discharging water at a rate of 40,000 cubic meters per second, holding up 16,000 cubic meters in a second, they said.The water level of the reservoir behind the dam rose to 158 meters at 8 a.m. Wednesday, about 17 meters under its maximum capacity of 175 meters. Flood waters are sluiced with the water outflux monitored at 40,000 cubic meters per second at Three Gorges Dam in Yichang, central China's Hubei Province, July 20, 2010.
