WOLFE CITY, Texas – A white police officer has been charged with murder in the fatal shooting of a Black man following a reported disturbance at a convenience store in a small East Texas town. The Texas Rangers say Jonathan Price was walking away from Wolfe City Police Officer Shaun Lucas Saturday night when Lucas deployed his Taser and then opened fire with his service weapon, killing Price.“The preliminary investigation indicates that the actions of Officer Lucas were not objectively reasonable and, therefore, not justifiable force,” the Texas Rangers said in a statement. The 22-year-old police officer was booked Monday into the Hunt County Jail. Bail is set at million. It's unclear if Lucas has a lawyer who can comment on his behalf.Family and friends of the 31-year-old Price say he was intervening in a domestic disturbance when he was shot. The Texas Rangers are leading the investigation into the shooting, with the cooperation of the Wolfe City Police Department and the Hunt County District Attorney’s Office. 1035

Yelp is rolling out a new policy that would warn consumers if a business is accused of "overtly racist actions."In a blog post, Yelp's VP of User Operations Noorie Malik said the company is taking a "firm stance on racism" after increasing users being warned for racist behavior at businesses, while also seeing a surge in people searching for Black-owned companies."We will now place a distinct Consumer Alert on business pages to caution people about businesses that may be associated with overtly racist actions," Malik said in the blog.Malik added that the site won't people won't be able to "artificially inflate or deflate a business's star rating" by leaving reviews based on media reports.Between May 26 and Sept. 30, Yelp said over 450 alerts were placed on business pages because they were "either accused of or the target of, racist behavior related to the Black Lives Matter movement." 905
With the Republican Party picking up its national convention and moving it to Jacksonville next month, the local sheriff says his county isn’t ready to host such a massive event. The event was moved out of Charlotte after President Donald Trump and Republicans could not receive assurances from North Carolina that the convention could be held without social distancing restrictions.Traditionally, political conventions are massive undertakings for law enforcement agencies. While security at the convention itself is generally handled at the federal level, thousands of officers help secure the area around the venue. When the GOP convention was held in Cleveland in 2016, Cleveland Police had backup from agencies across the US. The officers provided security at protests, as well as surrounding events attended by delegates and surrogates. But with the event moving to Jacksonville on short notice, plans that take months to come together haven’t had a chance to crystalize."With less than 40 days until the expected Republican National Convention is slated to arrive in Jacksonville, I am compelled to express my significant concerns with the viability of this event,” Sheriff Mike Williams said on Monday. “It is my sole responsibility to provide safety, security for our city and more importantly for the citizens who I serve. So, with a growing list of challenges, be it financial, with communication, with the timeline, I cannot say with confidence that this event or our community will not be at risk."This year’s convention is expected to be scaled back from those in the past due to coronavirus concerns. But with unrest over concerns of racial injustice throughout the US, large protests are still expected outside the site of the convention. 1759
