BEIJING, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police will begin a special four-month campaign to crack down on the production and use of counterfeit automobile license plates on Thursday.Police around the country will target trade in fake license plates, registration papers and other license plate-related crime, the Ministry of Public Security said Wednesday in a statement on its website.Violators sometimes forge license plates for military and government vehicles to enjoy privileges like free expressway charges.Some drivers use stickers to cover their license plates to cheat police.The campaign will begin June 10 and finish Oct. 10.Police carried out similar campaigns during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the National Day holidays in 2009 to create better traffic conditions.Statistics with the ministry show police nationwide seized about 267,000 counterfeit license plates in the 2008 campaign and 183,000 fake plates in the 2009 campaign.

BEIJING, July 30 (Xinhuanet) --Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co is expected to complete it takeover of Swedish luxury car brand Volvo from US automaker Ford Motor Co on Monday after getting government approval for the deal.Ministry of Commerce officials told China Daily on Thursday that the government cleared the Volvo deal on Monday 26, after the National Development and Reform Commission cleared the proposal last week.Geely has also got the necessary anti-trust approvals from the European Union and the US government for the deal.Li Shufu (center), chairman of Zhejiang Geely Holding Co, arrives for a news conference in Beijing earlier this year. The Geely-Volvo deal has won approval from the Chinese government."With this the decks are now clear for Geely to complete its acquisition of Volvo and start manufacturing the brand in China," said Wang Zhile, director of the research center on transnational corporations under the Ministry of Commerce.Yuan Xiaolin, Geely's spokesman for the Volvo deal was unavailable on Thursday for comment. However, unnamed sources from Geely told China Daily that the Zhejiang-based automaker will hold a formal function on Monday to complete the deal.Geely's shares surged nearly 11.32 percent and closed at HK.95 per share in Hong Kong on Thursday.Privately owned Geely paid .8 billion to acquire the Volvo car brand from Ford on March 28 this year. It was the biggest overseas deal made by Chinese automakers in recent times.Geely Chairman Li Shufu had at that time indicated that the company would invest 0 million as operating capital in Volvo apart from the US.8 billion purchase price.Geely said on July 15 that it had appointed Li as the chairman of the board at Volvo Car Corp. BEIJING, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Zhou Yongkang Friday urged increased supervision of police investigations and the reform of the penal system.Zhou, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks while attending a plenary meeting of the Political and Legal Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee in Beijing.Representatives of the Supreme People's Procuratorate reported to the meeting on their work to strengthen supervision on the use of investigative measures such as search, detention and freezing the suspect's asset by law-enforcement officers.Officials from the Supreme People's Court (SPC) also reported the progress made in a pilot program which intends to help courts at local levels to be more transparent and fair while meting out penalties.Zhou said these were vital to the building of a just and clean law-enforcement system and must be carefully implemented."Investigative and procuratorate authorities must attach equal importance to punishing crimes and safeguarding human rights, and to procedural justice and substantive justice, and must strictly abide by the law in enforcing investigative measures such as search, detention and seizing the suspect's asset," he said.He said the SPC's pilot program in roughly 120 local courts had promoted the fairness and transparency in handing out penalties, which had significantly reduced the rates of appeal, lodging a protest against a ruling and petition in criminal cases.Law enforcement agencies must push ahead the pilot program as one of their priorities, while in the meantime working to fully engage the public in the supervision of the handling of criminal cases, he said.Zhou, who also heads the Political and Legal Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee, called for more transparent law enforcement to ensure the public's right to know and supervise.He also said places for interrogation, custody, trial and detention must be under 24-hour audio and video recording.

BEIJING, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- China is completing a nationwide training for presidents of grassroots courts Friday, following the downfall of a group of judicial officials implicated in corruption scandals.More than 3,600 presidents from intermediate and grassroots courts across the country attended the training in Beijing, a year-long-event that focused on raising their awareness of corruption-free law enforcement and improving their abilities in handling social disputes, according to information released by the Supreme People's Court (SPC) on Thursday.More than 80 high-ranking judges, including SPC President Wang Shengjun, delivered lectures during the training, which also covered topics of improving the judges' knowledge in coping with public opinion as well as that of the media."Given the complex and volatile international situation and rising domestic demand for judicial services against the backdrop of emerging social conflicts ...it is imperative to undergo such large-scale training for presidents from grassroots courts." said Zhou Zemin, director of SPC's political department.Over the past year, a string of high-level judicial officials were punished for their involvement in corruption scandals.Among them were former SPC vice president Huang Songyou, who was sentenced on Jan. 19 to life imprisonment for taking bribes and embezzlement and Wen Qiang, former director of the Chongqing Municipal Judicial Bureau, who was executed on charges of corruption charges involving organized crime.Training judicial staff has long been a priority on the SPC's agenda.The SPC spent three years training judges of grassroots courts from 2005 to 2007.Since 2006, the SPC sent lecturers to grassroots courts in the western provinces and autonomous regions.
