NEWWARK, N.J. – OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma has pleaded guilty to three criminal charges and formally admitted its role in the opioid crisis.Tuesday's plea before a judge in Newark, New Jersey, is part of a larger settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice that also includes resolving civil claims. The Stamford, Connecticut-based company is to pay 5 million as part of the deal, while billion in forfeitures and penalties could be waived because of a proposed deal to resolve thousands of other lawsuits.Advocates are upset that the guilty plea applies only to the company and not executives or members of the Sackler family who own it.During Tuesday’s hearing, Purdue Pharma admitted to impeding the US. Drug Enforcement’s efforts to combat the addiction crisis and acknowledged it paid doctors to induce them to write more prescriptions for its painkillers.More than 750,000 people have died from drug overdoses since 1999, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).The CDC says two out of three overdose deaths in 2018 involved opioid, which are substances that work in the nervous system of the body or in specific receptors in the brain to reduce the intensity of pain.Since 1999, the CDC says overdose deaths involving opioid like prescription drugs and heroin have increased six times. 1337

Nicholas Benim survived in the woods alone for four days. Benim’s family said he got turned around while hunting in Oregon's Clackamas County Sunday night and separated from his hunting group. The hunter reunited with his family Wednesday afternoon at a ranger station in Estacada. The family says Benim is exhausted, with cuts on his hands and bad blisters on his feet. Besides that, he’s doing OK.“What a blessing, two hours ago they said they got him and we were so happy,” said father Daniel Benim.“Things could have gone either way, because we had no idea where he was,” said brother Bobby Benim.Daniel Benim said, “I’m a proud dad right now. He can barely talk right now, he’s tired, his feet are blistered.”Nick Benim was all smiles after a very lucky run-in with an off-duty U.S. Forest Service employee.“It was the first sign of human life he’d seen in ages, and all he was thinking was, ‘Oh my gosh, please stop and help me,’” said Bobby Benim.“Yep, it was just a tired wave,” said Mike Burri, the Forest Service worker who found Benim. “This guy looks tired, beat up, real wet, cuts on his hands, didn’t look in real good shape.”Burri said he was on his way to go hunting when he spotted Benim walking along Forest Service Road 4611, west of where Benim was separated from his group.“He said, ‘Hey, I’ve been lost for four days, can you take me into town?’” said Burri.Exhausted and hungry, Benim told Burri he got turned around while hunting Sunday night. He had to drink from the creek for days and make fires at night.“He had a Snickers bar for a while, over the past two days so he was pretty hungry,” said Burri.Burri said it’s remarkable how many miles Benim covered. Benim started near Hideaway Lake in Clackamas County. By the time he was found, after getting turned around multiple times, Burry thinks Benim covered up to 25 miles.“There’s no trails, that’s all wilderness,” said Burri.“Nick was prepared. He had a compass, he had a lighter, water bottle, little bit of food, he had a solar blanket. He was able to make fires at night,” said Bobby Benim.Benim is now back home with his wife and five young kids. His family wants to thank everyone who helped look for him. The Forest Service says this is another reminder to always be prepared when you head outdoors. 2297

New charges were filed late Friday against former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort in the special counsel investigation.Prosecutors allege that Manafort, with the assistance of longtime business partner Rick Gates, "secretly retained a group of former senior European politicians to take positions favorable to Ukraine, including by lobbying in the United States."The new indictment came less than two hours after Gates pleaded guilty to two criminal charges in federal court and pledged to cooperate with special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Russia and the 2016 presidential election.Prosecutors say Manafort orchestrated a group of former European politicians, called the "Hapsburg group," to pose as independent voices. Yet they covertly pushed positions favorable to Ukraine as paid lobbyists. Manafort used offshore accounts to pay the former politicians 2 million euros.Manafort also allegedly used million from an offshore account to fund a report on the trial of a political opponent jailed by his clients. A lawyer involved in the report -- Alex van der Zwaan -- pleaded guilty to lying to investigators earlier this week. The new charges, which sweep up some information Gates has conceded to investigators and other information in charges filed Thursday in Virginia federal court, include money laundering, foreign lobbying violations and making false statements.Manafort has pleaded not guilty and maintains his innocence.Gates admitted in a guilty plea Friday that he and Manafort had sent letters to the Justice Department in November 2016 and last February that falsely asserted they hadn't lobbied on behalf of Ukraine in the United States. The federal investigation into their lobbying work began in September 2016, about a month after Manafort left Trump's campaign. The new indictment also removes Gates from the charges, and also removes several counts from the original October indictment. In total, Manafort now faces five federal criminal charges in Washington, including money laundering and foreign lobbying violations, and 18 federal charges in Virginia, largely related to alleged bank fraud.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. NEW YORK, N.Y. – Mary Trump called on her uncle, President Donald Trump, to resign during her first television interview since the release of her tell-all book. While speaking with ABC News, she also discussed visiting President Trump in the White House in 2017, a few months after the inauguration. In one clip from the interview, Mary Trump essentially says that her uncle is unfit for office and dangerous."And I just remember thinking, 'he seems tired. He seems like this is not what he signed up for, if he even knows what he signed up for.' And I thought his response was actually more enlightening than my statement. And he said, 'they won't get me.' And so far, looks like he's right," she said. When George Stephanopoulos asked Mary Trump what she would say to her uncle if she was in the Oval Office today, she said, “resign.” She thinks the president is incapable of leading the country and said it’s dangerous to allow him to do so.President Trump's brother, Robert, took Mary Trump and her publisher to court to try to block the book's release and block Mary Trump from talking about it. However, on Monday, the New York State Supreme Court lifted a temporary restraining order, allowing the author to promote her book.Mary Trump is the daughter of Fred Trump Jr., who died after a long bout with alcoholism. During the interview, she claimed her father was “punished for being kind, for being generous… for having interests outside what my grandfather thought was acceptable.”Mary Trump’s ABC interview reflects much of what’s detailed in her book, "Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World's Most Dangerous Man." In it, she writes a scathing depiction of her uncle, drawing on her own memories, conversations with relatives, and pertinent documents. 1787
